Windows98 Yamato/Assyrian revisited
Wether a strategy game is in real time or turn based, as soon as you have ressources to gather and an economy to maintain, games will be formulaic. There’s no way out of this unless the game is extremely balanced, and some sort of limits are put in the game. Even then, when over one million players start to disect the game, the best course of action will be found very quickly. Rules could be changed so that Assyrians and Yamatos don’t have an edge in the beginning, but the rest would remain the same and the first one to get there will have a good option to win. With that in mind, is there hope against the yamato and Assyrian rushers? Well, first, ANY civs can be as fast as them. Keep your villagers working 3-4 tiles from their buildings and you will suffer a loss of 1 second for each trips. Any civs bonuses (+30%woodcutting for phoenicians, Stone for Babylonians, etc…) will be faster than the 30% walking speed up to ten tiles away. That is a tree 10 tiles away from the Town Center, a Phoenician woodcutter will get wood faster than an Assyrian woodcutter. I play Egyptians almost exclusively and don’t have problems bronzing at 15 mins and faster. I played them since the beginning and have adapted them to the current trends in strategies. Sure, I got my butt stomped at first quite often, but eventually you find a way, you’ll be in almost all situations and know what to do. You’ll wonder, instead of 20+ villagers and trying to go bronze, what about 16 villagers and going to tool to build walls ASAP. And then, is 12 villagers faster for doing this? How much time do you lose, and is it worth it? Eventually, you almost hear your opponents curse. They must build a Siege Workshop and at least one Stone Thrower to get in. More minutes for you. Then you’ll be horrified to see cavs in your town. You swore all the shallows were walled, but overlooked the transports in the equation. Then you’ll figure if it’s worth it to build walls all along the shores. How much time it takes and modify again your strategy. AOE is a learning process, and you learn when you lose. Stick with your civ and don’t take the easy way out. Playing Assyrians and/or Yamatos, you will never know anything else. Although I agree that they have an advantage in a 1v1 game, it’s not the case in a team game. An Egyptian/Persian/Phoenician team for example can beat anytime any combinations of Yam/Assys, given equal experiences from all the players. Particularly if the above team are players that played their civs for over 4 months, and evenmore if they know each others well. – Omnivac Scenario Contest Heaven Top Ten Downloads

Voting Polls Searching in Heaven History Tidbits Great battles Hannibal with his 50.000 men fought with their backs against the river which at that point flows in a shallow “U” form. As he had his left flank touching the Aufidus river, he didn´t have to worry about being outflanked by the 80.000 Roman troops, in fact his whole tactic was based on this secure flank. His center consisted only of a thin line of infantry. Hannibals main force was concentrated on the flanks. The left and right wings each contained deep phalanxes of heavy infantry and eight thousand cavalry next to the river on the left. His open right flank was guarded by two thousand cavalry. In the rear his camp was protected by eight thousand men. Varro, feeling confident of victrory with his more than 80,000 Roman soldiers, accepted battle, but as he saw that Hannibals flanks were well protected, Varro decided to crush the Carthagians by throwing allmost all his men through Hannibals center. With 65,000 men in his center, 2,400 cavalry on his right and 4,800 cavalry on his left he sent the remaining 11,000 men to attack Hannibals camp. After some preliminary skirmishes, Hannibal let his light center advance into a salient against the Romans. When the Romans reacted by attacking the center of Carthago, which slowly started an orderly but fighting retreat under the sheer might of Varros forces, Hannibal let his heavy cavalry on the left crush the opposing Roman cavalry. Hannibals cavalry rode after that around the Roman armys rear and attacked the Roman cavalry on Varros left flank from behind while Hannibals right flank attacked the same cavalry from the front. The Roman cavalry panicked and fled the field, pursued all the way by Hannibals right flank cavalry. The heavy cavalry of Carthago turned back to assault the rear of the Roman infantry who had pressed back Hannibal’s thin center line. While this happened Hannibal let his left and right infantry wings turn against the flanks of the Roman center which had advanced deep due to the weak center of Carthago. Now the weak center stopped their retreat and dug their heels in as the encircelment was complete. Varro, boxed in, unable to maneuver lost approximatively 60.000 men as his army was thoroughly destroyed. A footnote: During WW1 the same tactics was copied and used as the Schlieffen Plan in the Ardennes – learn from history. (want more?
