What’s this? – Civ II Fantastic Worlds & Ego Boost
When I got home today, I found a copy of Civ II Fantastic Worlds from my fine friend Martin at MPS. As the old Master of Civilization II Heaven and as the proud father of two Civ II Scenarios that appear on the new “Fantastic Worlds – Scenarios and Construction Kit”, all I got to say is… try the “Santa is Coming” and “Bears at Play” Modification Packages made by yours truly!

What a year for the Archangel, in the Age of Empires Game Credits, Dark Reign Manual Credits, and now two Home made scenarios on a Civ II CD. Thats all the Christmas I will need this year :). Even with all this unworthy fame and fortune(?) – Loomer (Area-S) still doesn’t answer my emails :(. – The Archangel

Age of Empires Tips – Population & Priests
A tip for newbies. If converting units is part of your strategy, you should max out your population before converting units. When you convert a unit, it counts against your population total. But if you are maxed out, you can convert guys and run your population total up. This works well with Egypt cause of their priest range bonus. See you on the field of battle. – *Gulliver*

Day 2 – What’s Your Favorite Single Player Game?
    (Game – Sex/Age – # of total – total Age responders)

    Random Maps – Male 13 & Under – 6 times out of 187
    Random Maps – Male 14 – 16 – 22 times out of 187
    Campaigns – Male 17 – 19 – 10 times out of 187
    Random Maps – Male 20 – 25 – 19 times out of 187
    Random Maps – Male 26 – 30 – 22 times out of 187
    Random Maps – Male 31 – 35 – 5 times out of 187
    Campaigns – Male 31 – 35 – 5 times out of 187
    Random Maps – Male 36 – 40 – 1 times out of 187
    Campaigns – Male 36 – 40 – 1 times out of 187
    Campaigns – Male 41 – 50 – 4 times out of 187

Age of Empires Tips – Me & My AoE Friends
My friends and I often play over the modem. We like to start in the Iron Age with a huge map. For my strategy, be the Phoenicians. Now…right from the beginning, make as many villagers as possible…but no more than 20. Send 5 over to get wood, 3 to get stone, 6 to get food (farms), and 6 to get stone. Research the highest walls and towers as fast as possible…plus a few essentials ( like gold mining, stone mining, farming and wood cutting). Now build two stables and two temples. Then, when you have enough stuff, build this unstoppable army. 15 war elephants and 15 priests. This army has never failed me. I have wiped out 7 other civilizations with this sort of army. Sure, you may loose a couple here and there…but you will gain a lot of extra men on the way, and with the elephants, a lot of power. So try it out, and I guarantee that you could wipe out a whole civilization in almost no time at all. – Nathan Norris

Age of Empires Tips – 2 Hunting Tips
This is how I hunt elephants (if they are only 6 or so tiles away from a storage pit). Get 6 villagers. Space all of them 4 tiles away from an elephant. Attack the elephant with all of your villagers at once. Since an elephant has 45 hit points, it will die in 2 spears from each of the 6 villagers (6*4*2=48). The elephant will also be close to the storage pit. If you have cavalry/mounted archers and are building up a force to attack with, use 1 of them to herd gazelles. Also, if there is a lion/alligator nearby, use the archer to attack the lion once, then stop and attack with villagers. It will help if you have only 3 or so hunters. – Chris V

    Age of Empires Tips
Let see now – how can I say this nicely? It’s very nice to see Stuff that is posted in Heaven on other AoE Fan Sites. But if you must do a cut and paste job off my pages, please at least do the common practice of linking back to the AoE site the information was “Borrowed” from. All webmaster work hard on their sites, and it’s very sad to see your work “Borrowed” to make some one else’s life easier. I would hate to ask the BIGGEST, BADDEST and SWANKEST guys from Area-S to pay you a little visit 🙂   – The Archangel

    Age of Empires Game Question
When you are repairing a boat or a tower or whatever, does it take less wood/stone proportionately to repair rather than to produce a new unit? In other words, if a scout ship cost 135 wood to produce initially, and it is half damaged from battle, and you send a villager over to repair it, does it cost 67.5 wood to repair it to full hit points or something less than that? Another question, I made the mistake of using the “gaia” cheat to control the animals. It worked, I got control of the animals, but how do you get back to control of your civilization?! thanks, – Rich

It costs half as much wood/stone to repair than it does to build a new thing. It is definitely worthwhile doing a repair. If you are having a naval battle, and you are allowed to withdraw your half-burnt ships to repair, while your opponent just keeps building new ships, you will win, given equal amounts of wood. – Sandy Petersen (Ensemble Studios)

    Boot Mag Review
The Dec 97 issue of Boot reviewed Age of Empires with a 9/10 score. AoE Demo is also on the Boot CD this month. They have an old Preview up, but I can’t seem to find the new review on line. A little quote from the mag “Age of Empires is an intelligent combination of the discovery and research aspects of Civilization and the real-time strategy elements of Warcraft. The result is an intricately detailed game with an innovative technology tree, sharp unit animations, and well-balanced gameplay that keeps you glued to your computer better than a heroin-laced keyboard” Ummm.. What’s this guy been smoking Heroin-laced keyboard! – The Archangel

    One More Time
Well this question has been posted several times before, but here it is again. A good source of information if you are fairly new to AoE is the Tips, Faq, & Old News Section of Heaven. – The Archangel

    Question:
I suspect the computer is given more starting resources or is helped in some other ways as well. I say this b/c when playing a single player random map on the hardest level, the computer attacks me with chariots, catapults, and cavalry units within 10 min’s and when I check the timeline it shows comp civ’s reaching tool age in 3 min’s and the bronze in 8! There is a huge difference between hard and hardest, and so faster comp response to build simultaneously might explain these other diff settings I still think its using different rules then as well. Ever notice how inefficiently the comp villagers are? There will be like 10 of them on an elephant 2 screens away from their nearest storage pit, very few farms are built, and as you show up to raid its town half those farms aren’t even being used. Not to mention the fact that the comp has 4-5 villagers wandering the map at all times, not just hunters, but also woodcutters and farmers will wander into your town. I don’t think the comp doesn’t keep track of its own food as you occassionally see abandoned towns when too many comp villagers die or it runs into some kind of snag, but it seems to me to be an illsuion that the comp gets its resources the same way we do.

And about that hardest diff setting. I’ve heard people say they’ve beat it and I’m wondering how? It usually takes me about 7-8 min’s according to the time line to reach tool age, and within a couple min’s of that (before I can get more than a few archers and perhaps 1 tower) I’m getting brutalized by bronze age units in droves. My usual opening moves are just to immediately build a granary next to the nearby shrubs, put 6-7 villagers on them, and use 2-3 more to get wood and build. If I make more than 8-10 villagers I figure their cost slows me getting to tool quicker and if I make less I figure I can’t gather food to get there. Any suggestions on how to stop chariots and catapults within 10 min’s?? – X

    Answer:
The CP does not get extra resources on any difficulty level save “Hardest”. He does not get any special perks. He can’t build faster, or see the map better, etc. etc. Even on Hardest mode the only bonus he gets are the extra resources.

In theory he could cheat because he can control all his units at once. In practice, this is reduced by the fact that the Ai requires him to get all his commands done in a certain amount of time — any units he hasn’t gotten to by then don’t get their new commands. Therefore, when you’re playing against the CP you’ll often see units sitting around doing nothing, just like you see when playing vs. a human.

The CP is admittedly very good at some things — scouting and dodging, for instance. Hardest mode is intentionally almost impossible to beat. But Hard mode is just as smart as Hardest — he just doesn’t get the extra goodies.

Note by the way that no CP ever builds walls — in that sense, the human gets the special perk, not the CP! – Sandy Petersen (Ensemble Studios)

What’s Your Favorite Tribe? – Final Results
Male players lean towards the Greeks and the Female players, the Assyrians! Out of 275 Male players, the 14-16 age group seems to be the most popular. Out of 20 Female players,  it’s also the 14-16 age group. The really interesting thing I noticed was the (Percentage wise) its almost even in both Male/Female age group for number of players. And now – What’s Your Favorite Single Player Game?
    (Game – Sex/Age – # of total – total Age responders)

    Campaigns – Male 13 & Under – 3 times out of 96
    Random Maps – Male 14 – 16 – 12 times out of 96
    Campaigns – Male 17 – 19 – 7 times out of 96
    Random Maps – Male 20 – 25 – 10 times out of 96
    Random Maps – Male 26 – 30 – 13 times out of 96
    Campaigns – Male 31 – 35 – 2 times out of 96
    Scenario – Male 41 – 50  – 1 times out of 96
    Random Maps – Male 41 – 50 – 1 times out of 96
    Random Maps – Male 51 & Over – 1 times out of 96

    Random Maps – Female 17 – 19 – 1 times out of 96
    Campaigns – Female 20 -25 – 2 times out of 96
    Campaigns – Female 31 – 35 – 1 times out of 96
    Campaigns – Female 36 – 40 – 1 times out of 96
    Campaigns – Male 36 – 40 – 1 times out of 96

Seems like Male players lean towards just about any game type (To early to tell). Female players, Campaigns! Out of 90 Male players, the 26-30 age group give the most responds so far. Out of 6 Female playersreporting in, the 20-25 is the age group. Another interesting point is – I thought for sure Random Maps were going to be a run away winner, not so it seems. Also “Death Match” did not make it in the top of any sex/age group! – The Archangel

What the Heck is a Flare? (Scenario Editor)
When you have a starting city in a scenario, you can fill the “black spots” with them instead of using the flags or other buildings. As for the CP, it’s definitely a spying eye. One such use is like in Siege of Athens where flares might be on the human buildings. The Spartan army seeing the building(s) can click on them to start the attack. Other buildings are spotted on the way. Flares have no fog of war only for about a few seconds at the beginning of the scenario for spotting, then the fog of war affect them. So it’s better to use them with buildings than units because you still can see buildings when the fog of war fall.

So flares are for fast starting scenarios, where the time of attack is the time the enemy army take to go there as opposed to spotting buildings with villagers, boats or army_explore_groups, and then sending the army. – Omnivac

Age of Empires Scenario Tips – Placement of Units
A tip I have found while creating scenarios then testing them myself. Whatever you do, do not place layers or series of cliffs in a direct line between the enemy and you, unless you don’t want the enemy to attack. Another thing is do not block passages in a direct line from the computer player to you with walls. Computer players do not take down enemy walls unless being attacked, or if they are being blocked by their own walls they will not delete them to get through. If you block their passage it screws up the AI and the game will be like shooting fish in a barrel. – zx75

Age of Empires Gaming Tips – Multi Team Play
Never be the first team to finish a wonder. Always wait until another team does first. Here’s why. Team 2 finished their wonder, then you(team 1) does. Be sure yours is within a few years, i.e. take your wonder up to 97% and stop, finish only after Team 2 finish’s theirs. Now Team 2 must defend it’s wonder against. Teams 3+’s most immediate threat is Team 2’s wonder. Assist a little to attack Team 2’s wonder if it looks like Team 3+ are not going to be able do it. Team 2’s wonder must fall for you to win. However once Team 2’s wonder falls, you have only a few years to defend till your 2000 year maturity. But while defending your wonder in the first stage (while 2’s wonder exists), be sure you create a significant offensive force). If Teams 3+ are not able to take out two’s wonder, you must. Good luck – Sanjaya Rajapatirana

Age of Empires Gaming Tips – One Agers Plan
In the Starting of a game, build about 16 villagers then upgrade to Tool(10 on food 6 on wood) . While in tool, DO NOT research anything in the Storage Pit(( they take up food unless you are planning an archer rush then let your Bowman get the 2 amour points because if a newbie get attacked by a archer rush and if they have no military forces, they will sent their villagers to fight your archers but with the 2 amour points, they will think twice because they need 35 bows to kill an archer of yours). ( built 2 Archeries range to pump out 8 archers then charge it at a player, kill all the villagers, do not care a #### about towers, just Kill and Kill, it will be enough to distract him and slow him down)research the woodcutting skill ( I forgot the name) Do not build farm now unless there is no animals left.( hunting gives you food at a much more accreted speed and it is worth it to build a storage pit just for hunting) and create 6 more villagers ( 3 on stone 3 on food) research watch tower and build a few in strategic positions and some near your wood cutters( experienced players will take out your woodcutters first because they are usually the least defended. Upgrade to Bronze. In Bronze, research wheel then pump out chariots ( mixture of archers and chariots ) then do the same as you are in Tool. your opponent should not have or is currently upgrading to Bronze HeHEHe! You should be able to make him resign Hahaha. His towers( no problem, slaughter all his villagers the retreat and use ONLY your chariots to take out his tower ( their range are longer ) But if the survive the Rush( he should be a long way behind) research all the farming things them MASS farming Upgrade to Iron. In Iron( your opponent will still be replacing his villagers) create a huge number of Siege Weapons then surround his city while attacking together with your chariots created in bronze( your opponent will think it’s a good time to retire and wash himself up) I have won plenty of time like this. – Xu Zhen Xiang

Age of Empires Gaming Tips – Priests
Priests are great for defense. Totally wall in your city and put a few priests(3-4) by the places you are frequently getting attacked. Its also a good idea to have one or two catapults by the priests too. Make sure they are back far enough from the wall so that catapults and archers cant get to them when your not looking. Then when you get attacked, bring the priests into range and convert the enemy units. If they are breaking down the walls, then kill them with your catapults. After you have defeated all of the enemy at your wall, delete part of the wall and bring in the converted units into your town and heal them with the priests. Then send them back out to attack the enemy (make sure you have a sizable force, not just one or two archers or something). Dont to build the wall where you deleted it. Also, make sure you keep your walls repaired. – pyros

    Tribute to Computer Player
Why is it that if I check the scores, immediately after starting a new game the computer player already has a higher score? Why is it the the computer gets to the Iron Age faster than I do in EVERY GAME? I am commonly attacked by Iron Age computer opponents(usually all of them), while I am working my butt off trying to get to the Bronze age. – Nikk

I think it has more to do with the AI’s ability to do many things at once (or at least in the flash of an eye). Takes it a millisecond to build farms, create villgers, build stuff, etc. Takes us mortals much longer, no matter how good we are. I think this gives the AI an advantage, but certainly not an insurmountable one. I’ve found that even against hardest if I can get walled in quickly I can beat any early advantages they get. – John S. Crouch

Two questions have been asked. Here are the replies:

If you have 2 or fewer computer players, they are your enemies. If you have 3 or more, then at least one will start out neutral to you. The neutral one will remain neutral until you attack him or a certain amount of time into the game (about 20 minutes) — these make him turn hostile. You can make neutral CPs into an ally by tributing 1000 stuff to them. This doesn’t have to be gold. It can be food, wood, stone, any combination, but you have to do it before he turns hostile.

When starting a scenario, if you start a CP as on different Teams from one another, they will be hostile to each other and fight between themselves. If you set a CP on the same team as you, he’ll be your friend.

As to the complaint as to why the CP gets to the Iron Age sooner than you, I suspect it’s just lack of experience. Just keep practicing — pretty soon you’ll be beating them every time if you want. – Sandy Petersen(Ensemble Studios).

    Question to the Designers
… about building time for units. Is building / training time in any way related with cost?… If not, with what?… Example: in RA, the cost would determine how long you had to wait for the new unit / building. How is it in AoE?… This is crutial to some decisions in critical situations. –  Leo

There is no programmatic relationship between build time & hit points — the quantities are independent of each other. Hence, if a particular building takes longer to build, this is just because the designers wanted it to take longer, _not_ because it has more hit points. Though there is a definite design tendency for bigger things to take longer. it’s _only_ a design tendency.  – Sandy Petersen (Ensemble Studios).

Alexander I with another Heavenly Scenario Review!
Bungle Bells, Bungle Bells, oh what Fun it isn’t

Scenario Name: Battle of Bung Hole
    Author: Bunnieman
    Playability: human vs. AI: Good
    human vs. human: Fair
    Creativity: Low
    Balance: Fair
    Overall Score: 5/10
    Miscellaneous: yawn

Having had a bad day (my boss knows just how bad) I though what the hey, let’s try out a scenario that sounds like it could be fun. Bung Hole? Yeah, here’s somebody who has done something different, something funny in a kinky kind of way—much like I go through life at the office. Well, guess what? It was so unfunny I think a system crash would have actually relieved me and cracked me up more than this scenario did.

The map is not shaped in a way that you or I would think it might be—considering the name. No funny little droplet islands or forests so curvaceous as to suggest the superstructure that is commonly punctuated by a bung-hole. Even the trees fall like normal logs. No strange, log or hole shaped groups of fauna. It really makes this editor wonder if he missed the point somewhere. Now, just so you don’t think I’m picking on this scenario because I’m in a foul mood (some people would venture the opinion that I’m always in a foul mood <g>) I’ll tell you that the author is quite sincere about the intentions of the scenario. A basic, peninsula type map for eight players and no priests to absolve away the hostilities. No mas. That’s it, take it or bung it. He even coyly admits that bung-hole isn’t much of a name but he was ill at the time and at a creative ebb. All I can say is: I hope you are feeling much, much better.

Let’s see, uhh, yes….that’s it—sorry folks, I just dropped off to sleep again, but then the scenario will do that to you. You start off on a large island with two shallows and some mean neighbours who are quiet initially but then keep on coming over to ask for some grey poopon. From then on you can be sure that it’s going to hit the fan. Some walls are in order and will allow you to hold the fort quite nicely. Naturally, you and your neighbours can progress through all the ages and most of the corresponding technology.

You have good resources in your hinterland which I always find convenient and secure and there is plenty of room to build. Although not a waterworld, there is quite a bit of water and you will be needing those triremes and catremes soon enough. Basically, if you chop down all the trees available to you, you can build a massive navy consisting of three strike groups that can flush the major contenders to the ‘throne’ down the tubes pretty quickly (squirts campaign) or you can get your armies to hack away at the multitude of the civilizations and thus go the slow attrition route (constipation campaign).

The author admits that this is not much more than an exercise in playing Age of Empires without the fuss of priests. Yes, there are no priests for any of the civs and for those of you who think that is a vast improvement, then give this scenario a 7/10. If that’s not your game, then give this one a miss. – Alexander I (Senior Review Editor)

Age of Empires Gaming Tips – Naval Battles
I’ve noticed that when my ships get attacked in a naval battle, they tend to return to the ship that is attacking them. This isn’t very helpful when I’m trying to retreat, or my fishing boats are all getting destroyed. I assume this must be some sort of bug or glitch. So for the only thing I’ve found to remedy this is to punch your roomate in the head. Ok so this doesn’t really fix the problem, but it sure feels better after your entire naval fleet has been sunk because of some twit programmers errors. – Cjilgott Stalinsky
