Rise of Rome |
This scenario is a lot of fun, as it has several different elements and a few surprises as you progress in the adventure. You will start as a lone witness of the destruction of your people and will be forced to escape. More often than not, you'll have to think really hard, as there are multiple ways to overcome certain obstacles, while others are well adjusted to allow only one option, which means you will probably die a few times during this adventure. Save regularly!
There are multiple enemies (ranging from wild animals and lonely archers to entire civilizations), but the difficulty is not that hard once you figure out what you need to do. The map is very compacted, so you will never be left wandering. Just remember that, if you get killed, chances are you need to rethink your strategy.
Even when this is just one scenario, it is more than enough to ensure a few hours of fun, with a surprise and abrupt ending awaiting for you right in the last few seconds of playing, which, I hope, will left you completely satisfied.
Also, there is quite a lot of room to build and grow your own empire without fear after the first hour or so. You will be granted time to find resources and explore, choosing from a wide range of options that will be presented to you without any need of dialogue.
The idea is that you never get bored or frustrated, but at the same time, I wanted to present you with a real challenge that should be pretty similar for anyone regardless of the level of skill or experience. By this I mean novice and experienced players will find it challenging but beatable. Also, changing the difficulty won't have any noticeable effect on this scenario.
This is my first scenario, one I've been thinking of for many, many years. However, I have tested it several times. So, you don't need to worry. It has no glitches as far as I know. Also, I've done my best to use as many features as humanly possible to make it look beautiful, diverse and engaging.
Any criticism is very much appreciated, as I am really curious about how people will react. Also, I'll be playing and commenting other people's scenarios, but I will give pryority to those who take the time to play mine.
By the way, this scenario is compatible with AOE The Rise of Rome and AOE Gold.
If you liked this scenario and want to play something else done by me, feel free to check "The Forbidden Mountain":

I have updated this scenario with a few extra visual/gameplay elements to make it even more interesting. Also, after thinking about it, and after playing scenarios made by other people, I think this scenario is more like a role-playing game than an strategy game. In any case, I hope the people who download it find it interesting and enjoyable. |

You wrote: "I don't know wether or not it's compatible with AOE1, but you can and let me know and I'll update the description."
If you made it with AOE:ROR, then it's not compatible with AOE1 (plain version), because you saved it as an scx file, whereas AOE1 uses scn files only. |

So this file should be moved to the "Rise of Rome: Single Player Scenarios" section. |

I responded to your comments on my Gethsemane scenario and my "Drusus and Tiberius, Version 2" scenario. You didn't leave an email, so I don't know how to contact you. |

I read your comments. However, I am no longer playing scenarios from The Granary. I reviewed a bunch of people in the most constructive and honest way I was capable of, yet nobody commented on my scenarios. This is one of the reasons I am now making official campaigns for The5thLegacy patch only. |

Aww man, it makes me sad to hear you feel that way Augusto. Sadly constructive reviews are hard to come by these days. Used to be we had a thread on the Forum where people would come and ask for feedback if they really wanted it but nowadays even that's dead. Still if you like I could try to give your scenario a look when I have the time. |

That would be nice, as I am considering to update this scenario for The5thLegacy patch. So, feel free to give it a try whenever you have the time.
EDIT: I just checked your pretty town entry and I was amazed by what I saw. Please keep in mind this scenario does not use any of those incredible techniques, as it is more focused in gameplay.[Edited on 08/21/21 @ 05:10 AM]

Playability: 4
This scenario follows a tried and true fomula which has been around since that guy at ES messed around in the beta scenario editor and came up with the "I will be back" scenario of the Greece campaign. You know, the hero being driven away by a superior force, having to run away, finding a Gaia base and then making a comeback. It is of course a well used formula for a good reason, and the execution here and the journey to the secret base here is interesting enough. I don't really have a lot to add, it's classic gameplay with some interesting perks.
Balance: 3
An issue I would say is that the main opponent, Red, mostly seems to consist of a static land-based army with mainly melee units, while the player once they discover their main base of operations is granted a decent fleet of Juggernauts. If you know what you're doing, it is simply way too easy to park those by the shoreline and eat away at the opposition as the computer will stupidly send their whole army to try and fight an enemy they can't reach. It might fall into the area of cheap exploits but the way units are placed I feel like it comes to mind way too easily, and even without them I feel like the scenario just allows for the player to wear down the red player at their own pace with very little pushback from the computer. Balance is of course largely subjective and I could imagine a player being more into just exploring and having fun with a map enjoying this quite a bit, but for me the challenge just isn't here.
Creativity: 4.2
You can tell there are some interesting ideas figuring in the background, but the way the scenario is constructed means the player doesn't really have to engage with any of them to a greater extent. There are some basic elements of a diplomacy scenario here, encouraging trading to build up your economy but the hints also mention the possibility of eventually turning on allied cities, I presume to secure their resources. Thing is I never quite felt that was necessary due to the above mentioned balance. There are some interesting areas of hidden Gaia units, and a transport hidden near the edge of the map hints that there might be multiple paths to the end goal, which I quite like. (When I tried using it I got blocked by a red War Galley but whatever. :P)
Map design: 3.5
As the designer says there isn't really a whole lot of focus on terrain rendering or design tricks here. That said the map is at least quite well planned and shows some good elementary map design, which is really the core of good map design. It has forests, paths, cities and oceans all laid out in a very reasonable looking manner, and serves as a decent example of classic map design without too much focus on design tricks.
Story/Instructions: 3.5
There's a single paragraph of story in the history section, which doens't really tell you anything you couldn't already imagine for yourself. I don't feel like it did a whole lot to immerse me into the scenario. The instructions are sort of unclear, but not in a way that really hinders the player from getting the job done. Reading them I assumed my objective was to destroy player 2 completely, but then at the end of the day there were two artifacts surrounded by gaia units and capturing those wins you the game? Why? I feel like the scenario would feel more connected if you were to return to the site of the original massacre at the end, maybe placing the artifacts there (recover the holy items of your people or whatever) or just making it a point to bring Hero Alexander to that area. As of now it's not like the player can't finish the scenario due to not knowing what to do, but the ending kind of comes out of the blue.
Final reflections:
The scenario as a whole feels a little Sandboxy, as there are a lot of things in it which you don't ever really have to interact with if you decide to pursue your objective straight away. I guess some people are more inclined to enjoy that but I prefer it when scenarios are more planned for the player having a given directive. There are some parts where it really just feels like the designer messed around in the editor with no clear thought about why things are there in the scenario, like the walled compound with all the villagers in the South. Player 2 is also named Choson while having the actual civ selection be Assyrian, while all others just use default names. Simply some sloppiness on the designers part? As a whole this is a perfectly playable scenario, and I can tell there are some interesting ideas, but I think the lack of direction and clarity in the objectives makes it less interesting than it has potential to be. Maybe create some clear reasons for the player to battle with Neutral cities, explore the corners of the map etc.?
