Sequel to 'Gates of Fire'. The Persians of Xerxes, triumphant after their slaughter of the 300 Spartans under Leonidas at Thermopylae, and led by a treasonous, deposed Spartan King, Field Marshal Mardonius, advances on Athens. All flee before their might, the armies of Thebes and Athens withdraw intact to the west to save their forces to fight another day. Athens is razed and the Persians march north to demolish each city state in its own turn. Unknown to the Persians, Athens has made alliance with Sparta, and the Spartans in turn have convinced the Corinthians, Mycaneans, Thebans, Thessalians, and Syracusans to ally with the Athenian and Spartan forces for the coming battle. Athenian Rangers ride throughout the Greek mainland summoning all citizen soldiers to gather at the Temple Plain and mass one united Greek army to face the massive Persian host for battle, a huge Spartan army of heavy infantry moves north out of Peloponesia to join them, Thessalian heavy cavalry rides south to the plain. Meanwhile the Persians are encamped and dawdle, Xerxes struggling as to whether to return to Persia or not against all advice of his warrioress advisor, Artemisias. This inexplicable delay could have fatal consequences for the Persians. Multiplayer also : ; ; ; No |

This is an historic battle between the Persians and the Greeks. You have to defeat the encampment of Persian Soldiers, by gathering all sorts of units from around Greece and uniting in a battle
Playability: 2
The main thing you'll be doing is gathering troops with a scout. Then 2 scouts make the job quicker, you can even send horse archers to gather as well. You must search the whole map for gaia units. Once you have enough (there are way too many!) you go and defeat the camp. Quite easy.
Balance: 2
It is a little fun, but very anticlimactic, as you realize how easy the battle is. A good number of units is used, but after a little enjoyment watching them go at it, it is all over and you have won. You can't really lose, the only way this scenario could be made more difficult while keeping the same idea is to have a time limit, which would have been realistic. Try building a wonder and seeing if you can win before you win by countdown.
Creativity: 3
A creative story, lack of a good map effort (it's okay but not so creative) and a complete lack of triggers and victory conditions.
Map Design: 4
Good map design, but a little under done. I know this isn't the author's best work, I've played two 4 star plus scenarios by DarkStar and he is capable of better map design. The map as a whole is okay, but no eye candy and poor balance of units. Player 2 should be given more units on the map and a stronger camp (eg place some towers)
Story: 5
As a bizarre twist, the scenario has an excellent story, a great looking bitmap and a full history section. It almost makes up for other areas.
Conclusion: A weak effort by a good designer, but still above average. Looking for a scenario with low difficulty and a big battle at the end? Download this. Otherwise don't.
Also Consider: Shipwreck Wars by the same author, DarkStar. It got a 4.6 it is much better. |
