For thirty years the Uris have been entrenched in a brutal war. The war has sapped everything from them - their life, their families, and most devastating of all, their religion. The five-headed beast that reigns over the ocean of blood will continue to wage war upon itself unless someone, or something, can bring its mad plight to an end. While the beast revels in the chaos it has created, out in the dark woods of the north, a long forgoten prophecy is being fulfilled... |

Playability: 4
I really had a lot of fun playing this campaign. It is a fantasy campaign and the story is not much diverse from others, but this one very well-designed. Maps, objectives and gameplay just all fit together.
I'm sorry to say that there are also some bug, one being a major bug. I cannot find any reason but somehow I lost the scenario where you have to build 10 towers and convert the enemy hero while you're under heavy naval attack. I managed to clear off all pirates and most of the other enemies just to get an "you lost" message for no obvious reasons. Since this occured everytime (sometimes even a few seconds after the beginning) this must be some bug, I guess.
Then, in the last scenario you can win by simply killing all enemies. Probably you can do this in each scenario. Well, most times this will be much harder than your real objectives.
Balance: 4.5
Balance was near to perfection. I couldn't win many scenarios on my first try, but with the second or third one I managed to finish all. The last scenario is a bit overdone. Even if Romans are a strong civ, it gets really hard to fight against 3 enemies at the same time and still make progress by destroying towers for example.
Besides this, there was really nothing to complain about.
Creativity: 4
Although the story sounds quite familiar to anyone who has ever played any fantasy game you can find quite a lot of creativity here. First of all, the scenario objectives, of course. They are very well done, maybe just a little bit too much build & destroy gameplay, but there is only one scenario where you really have to eliminate one enemy. The maps are used wisely by putting towers on elevations or blocking ways by forest or water. You often start with low ressources or you are not able to build a certain building.
Map Design: 3.5
The maps are oldschool, but there is good use of elevations, trees and animals. Sometimes they look a bit artificial. The cities consist of well-grouped buildings, surrounded by walls and/or towers. There is no eye candy, no roads, bridges or any other catchy thing. Yet, I want to award the good, strategic use of towers or units on top of mountains.
Story/Instructions: 4
The storyline won't be a big surprise, but it is written in a nice way. There are quite good hints and there is a bitmap in the beginning (although quite useless). You can see, that the author put efforts in here.
Additional Comments:
download recommendation: Yes!
Difficulty is rather high, which I liked. But be aware of this and don't get frustrated if you can't finish one or the other scenario. |
