no not at all but I got your attention
Introduction: I am developing Map Scenarios in the video game Starcraft 2 that will use ideas found in Age of Empires. I am posting here to see if I can generate discussion on which ideas to implement on the project.
About me: I enjoy playing games and RTS games is my favorite genre. I've collected all kinds of RTS games starting with Command Conquer and until now, Legacy of the Void by Starcraft.
What does AoE has that Starcraft doesn’t?
In Age of Empires, there are different civilizations to choose from. Each civilization grants unique bonuses such as new units and tech. In Starcraft 2, there are only three "Civilizations" to choose from however, they vastly different from one another. You have the Human team, an bug-like alien team and a alien team like the covenant from Halo.
In Age of Empires, unit speed and attack accuracy is more realistic; There is a chance for an archer to miss hitting a moving target. In Starcraft 2, the accuracy is on point. It makes sense since you're dealing with guns and lasers.
There is no such thing as Aging in Starcraft 2, you are given the units you can make and can upgrade their stats with a blacksmith to upgrade its stats.
There are only two resources in Starcraft 2 called Minerals and Vespene Gas. Minerals is like your food/wood. Gas is like your coin/stone.
Why not create map in AOE instead of Starcraft?
I still like the Starcraft series and it just came out with its last expansion pack. Also, its map editor is a lot more advance. Its an ENGINE editor that allows people to create outside-the-box scenarios. Some popular map scenarios are: Team Tower defences, League of Legend clones, Zombies survival maps, etc.
The Project
I call this project: Starcraft 2 Generals. It will be a series of Scenario maps, players pick 1 out of 7 civilizations, complete objectives and finally defeat the computer opponent. Here are the ideas I have so far:
- 3 player CO-OP maps where players must accomplish objectives and finally defeat the computer opponent.
- Using the human team, I will create 7 civilizations, each will have their own advantages and unit bonuses.
- Each Scenario map will benefit certain combinations of chosen by the players. Some optional objectives will require specific civilizations to be chosen to play as.
- I will add Ages to the game. When you click on the custom Age button, this greatly enchance the unit strength and also provide access to new units and tech.
- There is only 1 artillery unit in Starcraft 2, I want to create a variety of artillery using the same model but change its stats. Similar to AOE, one will be good against infantry, one against and even one artillery that shoots sky units.
- All unique units in AOE are basically buffed version of a specific type of unit with a different name. I want to bring that novelty to Starcraft 2 and each of the 7 civilizations will have specific unique units and buffs.
- Starcraft 2 only has two resources, maybe create a 3rd resource and its the neutral alien critters you rarely see in skirmish maps? How about I spawn a bunch in a map and they will be an essential to building your force
- Dutch is such an oddball civilization, its the only one that has a unique game mechanic of people costing coin. How about I port that idea to starcraft 2 and one of the civilizations can create the Bank, maybe call it something more science fiction like - the neuro market which generates resources?
- Garrisoning is limited in Starcraft 2 to transporting units in sky ships. maybe allow the main base building garrison units and have a town bell? maybe science fiction like an alarm system button instead?
- Allow several builder units build a building so that it builds faster
- GREATLY increase the health of buildings to mirror its strength in AOE.
Conclusion:
I’m here to see if anyone is interested in discussing more ideas that i’ve missed for consideration to be implemented in Starcraft 2 scenario maps. My main focus and challenge is going to be taking the the Human team in Starcraft and dividing it into 7 unique civilizations.
