I got hyped by Jan dc's new buildings and wanted to try my hands at making aoe1 unit in blender.

Slinger upgrade seemed the best choice and here is the result so far with bronze and iron textures for shield/helm(it's a macedonian tall type):


What do you think about the outfit? The torso straps are similar to the short swordsman.

It was one of the few ancient buildings I have that didn't require completely remodelling. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I agree with Mahazona the ram part should go further back when attacking, and the body should move less.
Will make the beam pull back a bit more but I won't change the ram moving with it. I like it this way.

Great work Tzontlimixtli. I see you're reusing several things from the old models . The textures you use seem a bit dark though. You might also want to hand model the roof like other aoe buildings have.

Yes, sticky it and change the title to something more general about new units, because there are many more amazing things here besides just a new Slinger!
making it civilian clas works well, except that it receives most of the bonuses the villagers get as well and you get that attack cursor even if the Caravan can't attack.
You could make bonuses/techs affecting the civilian class affect the individual Villager units themselves instead of the class. That way both Villagers and Caravans can be civilians, but Caravans won't receive Villager bonuses.

A lot has gone on while I've been on holiday, I think the work going on here has reached to the next level, I love seeing what others a working on!

Imo, the page should be a sticky (and just as Highwing said the name should be changed to something like New AOE Units or New AOE Graphics or something.)

I'm fine with changing the topic name, thank you all for the activity!

@Epd999: The camel slps are uploaded, you can check them after the approval. I removed the shield to make it more heavily resembling the downgraded version also both Scythe Chariots and Heavy Cavalry have shields and i think it'd have been redundant. Thank you for the feedback though!

@Mahazona: Glad you see it as original, because that was one of my goals. Rendering it again would take the same time as doing the Caravan, so i can't promise you that.

Since you wanted a driver for the camel and i had the egyptian outfit, here it is:

Now i know what you think: "make a greek, chinese and persian looking ones" but let's be realistic. There will be only one, so choose it wise.

What about a hybrid of them all. :P

To be honest, you could probably get away with that outfit. There are already Egyptian-style charioteers and Greek/Roman infantry units shared by everyone.

Id say go for a generic look for the trader but this is also good.for some reason the trader looks too tall for me.

Another good idea could be make graphics for units that use the same model like heavy cavalry/cataphracts and phalanx/centurion.

-Maybe recolor heavy cav into iron/silver armour?
-Centurion could be renamed and changed with pikeman
-Legion could use the Forgotten Empires graphic with square shield, but I think that units should be more generic and not too faction specific.

Some ideas about naming, now that are some mods with aoe I porting to aoe II

-Instead of strong sling I would go with veteran slinger (feels like more common term in other games)
-I would also change the names of hoplite into spearman (spearman, phalanx, pikeman) and legion into heavy, elite or noble swordman. Heleopolis to heavy balista, etc..

The driver had just a white thing on the head, i guess this was pretty common in the middle-east, what more generic than that?

Anyway i changed it to player color, but i think he should still be half-naked because it would fit a tool age unit more.

However the addition of driver was a good idea, because now the icon won't be a camel's face

If you have some other design in mind, please show me references, i checked the Rise of Nations caravans and they have turbans. Other than that they wear simple tunics and in AoE1 it would look like the Composite Bowman at best.

@av93: These are good ideas, but i prefer to make new units rather than reskins of old.

I would prefer if the "thing on the head" was removed, that would make the unit very generic. I would still prefer a version with an Ox, Donkey & Horse for each civilization, what's wrong with doing something like that? Why can't each building set get a unique graphic for each civ graphic set?

Yeah it takes a lot of time to do these graphics. You shouldn't take it for granted like this. In the end it's up to Yan to decide which graphics he wants to do.

If we were going to be as generic as possible and the animal can't be unique to graphical sets I think that mule/donkey or horse is the best unit to use, not a camel, and again it should lose the hat.

Without a hat he looks too simple. Also with less contrast, either bald or with dark hair. If you want a horse there is one hidden in the editor already and it could be confusing with the scouts.

The camel may not be generic but that is a good thing for the gameplay. When you think about caravans and trade routes, you imagine camels right? Only a few periphery civs, like Romans, Greeks and Yamato woudln't have use it but that's not an eurocentric game like aoe2, hence a horse cart wouldn't fit.

Yeah, the game isn't that big on perfectly matching units with cultures, so I don't see some mediterranean civs having the camel tader as a big deal. Donkeys might look kind of cool though.

Even the farmer has a hat so its more fitting the trader also has a truben maybe you can give him a beard so he looks a little different from a villager.I always thought the beta immam you made for FE looks more like a trader

If people want a donkey there is one done for AOE2 so it would not be that hard to convert and resize it.One way I see is to render the animal and the trader as units and annex them in the game so maybe in the future other animals can be used.

Good ideas! The guy was indeed bigger than the villager, so i scaled him, also made his skin color brighter.

Being a new civilian is pretty cool, because many civs already have bonuses for it, like being cheaper for Shang or with more hp for Sumer. Also makes sense to be created at the town center, so you won't spam them in tool age(there is a new tech that enables it also).

Both Caravan and Flamethrower are done and i'll upload a data mod in the next couple days.

REQUEST: Does anyone want to help me with editing the AIs, so the new stuff can be used in Single Player?

@Sword of Aes: I like your Egyptian tool Barracks and wanted to add it, but why is it in .png? It lose quality when i make the slp.

The rope is not needed (the catapults don't have a tumbler that spins the throwing arm so it's ok). The player color banner needs to be wider.



Actually, looking back the horizontal bar needs to be like the stone thrower along with the player color banner size and positioning.

although able to use this mod with the HD version. I would like to comment on the strong slinger. he should have more hit points (HP). He is very weak. not take any attack from a helopolis. he should have an HP 40 or even 50 to make it more interesting. Other than that you did a great job.

excuse me. I mistook it worked with the common version. but playing today I noticed a bug related to Caravan unit. it can not be cured by the priest or repaired by the villager. I would like to make some suggestions. the first I already said before: the strong slinger could have an HP 40 or 50. already the camelry amored should have a golden aura in your icon. as with other units. as an example what happened in the evolution of war elephant. your upgrade has a golden aura (armored elephant).
other bug I noticed was that the farms were producing gold to food inves. I did not understand why.

Thank you for the feedback! I fixed the bugs and updated the download, you need to replace only the empires.dat file.

The Caravan is now again civilian, i made it trade boat before because the ai had problems with it.

Farmers should work properly now and Caravans would gather the gold from your trade workshops instead the villagers.

as the golden aura "armored camelry" in your icon? you also would not find better increase HP's strong slinger? 50 to 40 or HP. The priest has initial HP 25 (after searching mysticism technology doubles the life). The villager has initial HP 25 (after searching Jihad technology up to 65 HP). If the upgrade does not have a slinger HP better, so why not make some of these two technologies also affect the HP slinger and its upgrade "strong slinger". Look, the work you did otimo found, but the slinger also deserves HP improvement to not be obsolete in the age of iron and so completely lose its value.

Ah yes about the slinger, i need feedback from more players because it can become too strong. The main purpose was to counter Chariot Archers and the range is more important here to prevent their hit and run. HP helps against infantry which isn't the goal.

I understand that it should not become too strong. but that at least has an HP 35 or 40. Since it is not affected by armor. or else in your upgrade has +2 armor (in strong slinger). although not affected by any of the armor, keeping your HP 30 or 35 but the upgrade (strong slinger) with + 2 armor.

You could easily fix that by giving Slingers access to melee armor.
The conversion is going well, but I would like to know is:
- Will you be adding the Assyrian Battering Ram to the game? If not can I add it to the upatch version.
- Are we allowed to use the new roman trade workshop in the mod for use in our own mods (I think the gold effect is a nice touch and I like the new graphics for the roman civs, though the icon is glitched)
- When I finish do I give it to you (through E-mail or Skype, both which are found in my User Profile) or do I upload it to the granary myself.
- May I suggest adding this mod to moddb? (Because I'm naive, and would like a mod to compete with there )
- Can I make version -1.0, that removes all bonuses that were added/changed to the civilizations. (Except Greek Slinger + Shang siege movement)

Great to hear Epd999!

- You can add the Assyrian Ram in the UP version. I didn't because i had to figure it's balance and attributes.

- You are free to use the Roman Trade Workshop in your mods. What is the glitch with the icon, player color?

- You can upload it yourself, it might be better that way in case of updates.

- Moddb is a good idea, i'll look into it.

- Sure you can revert the civ bonuses.

it is true, also I agree. is kind of illogical all military units receive armor attributes and somento the slinger, which is a "military" unit does not receive armor. he should at least be affected by armor. ja your HP can not be increased. but I still thought to give a little more HP for your upgrade. strong slinger with HP 35.

Since you were asking about UP mods, there is a detailed tutorial on the official site on how to create them. It's quite simple if you are already familiar with A.G.E. and Turtle Pack (most mods in development here are already UP mods). UP mods don't replace any game files and work directly in the UP Mod Manager.
