You can just use the discs again - they will play instead of mp3 (just like they did before instead of midi). As for mp3, you can add as many mp3 files as you want, any standard encoding should work (including VBR), just maintain the naming scheme (xmusic1.mp3, xmusic2.mp3, etc).

Is there a place where mods designed to be used by UPatch are located?

Also, under "The proper A.G.E settings for opening/saving" in the create a mod tutorial AGE doesn't set the DRS path to data2 automatically, it sets it to data and if you change it to data2 it crashes the program if you try searching or clicking a unit in the list. Everything else worked fine as far as I know.

Mods are usually posted here (Download section) or in ModDb, it's up to the mod's author. The correct A.G.E settings are visible from the screenshots included in "Creating Mods", data2\ is not entered anywhere, it's loaded automatically by A.G.E when data\ is entered.

Hey Scout, first of all, thank you for this patch. Playing in HD is a miracle of the universe.

Anyway, I experienced two bugs when I just started a random map.
First of all, I could not turn sounds off completely. I tried to do so, pulled the lever in the menu all the way down, but I could still hear it, albeit it was quiet low. Pulling down the music lever worked like a charm.

Edit: Okay, so apparently, not only does the sound lever not turn off the sounds completely, it instead turns off the music, too! No matter what the music lever is set to, the sound lever turns off the music.

Secondly, I built some farms and a little while after my people started farming, I upgraded the farms in the marketplace twice (played Yamato). When the first farm ran out of food, I heard the sound, the farm became barren, but my peasant continued farming (and actually collecting food) even a little after the farm was completely gone. Could this be a result of you changing the farming upgrades?

I'm using Windows 10 Pro, 64bit

The Farm bug you mentioned is very weird, but it's not likely to be related to the patch. Unlike other changes, the farm upgrade values are not hacks or anything, just changed numbers in the .dat file. These changes were made very long time ago and were never problematic. I don't know why you encountered such strange bug, it could be some very random glitch in the game or some weird problem on your computer. Make sure you are not using any mods and try the procedures explained here (under "IMPORTANT"), you can also try clean installing the game.

The Sound Volume slider in Game Settings is actually Master Sound Volume, so it's supposed to turn off music as well when set to lowest. Otherwise you are right that some very low level sound remains, it's not off completely (I'll check this out). You can use "nosound" as command line parameter to turn sound completely off, but it will turn off the music as well.

Well, I haven't encountered the farm bug since then, but my first thought was that there are two values to be changed, one for the amount of food you can harness and one for the time the farm is showing. It's probably the same value, and decreases under the same circumstances, but a different constant. At least that were my thoughts.

Anyway, about the sound thing, is it possible to change the lever to only turn off noises? Because sometimes, you might want to only turn down those when the music is too quiet. It would make sense, I think, maybe it's possible.

Turning the music up and the master sound lower (but not off) will make the music more pronounced. But only music with no sounds was not considered as an option in the game by the developers. There is a simple way around that - play the game music with external program while playing the game with sounds off (the music is in the file sound\xmusic1.mp3).

Just chiming in about the stability of the game with your patch. I mostly play single player random maps and scenarios, with the odd LAN game here and there. I've yet to experience a crash, great work!

@kortefa to take a screenshot you Press both Crtl and F12 at once and the screenshot will be located at:C:\Users\\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires\screenshots or In your age of empires directory if you don't have Upatch installed

If you do have Upatch install you can also convert age of empires to windows mode, this should allow you to use printscreen and record games.

Please help, PLS HELP. Why this version 1.1 added to game new file "language_up.dll"?

Now I dont know why..

But I know that,
Age of Empires - language.dll
Age of Empires RoR - languagex.dll
What is language_up.dll?

Without language_up.dll its still working but gatherers carry only 6 Food instead of 10. With this file is all ok.
But without languagex.dll game not work.

I want create new czech language for AoE and AoE RoR but I dont know which .dll file I must edit?

PLEASE HELP. Thanks for reply.

You should edit language_up as that is the language.dll Upatch uses. As to the food carriage, that shouldn't be effected by the langauge_up.dll but the empires_up.dat. Perhaps it was because Jihad was researched?

I suggest to prevent Scythe chariots and War elephants from attacking allied units. Priest should heal units automatically too like in AOE2.

(DISCLAIMER: I didn't read throug the whole thread. If this was already mentioned, just ignore)

I would like to report a bug:

The technology (alchemy) and civilization boni (Carthaginan) for the fire galley work in UPatch HD R3, but are not shown on screen.
I.e. that means that an Carthaginian Galley with alchemy actually does 36 damage, but only 24 are shown. The "+12" is missing.

@Romanos_V: It's not really a bug, but a side effect of another change that prevents Fire Galleys from killing land units too easily (on shallows or near shore). The actual damage dealt is correct, so it doesn't matter much. I may still consider removing this change altogether in the next major release. Thanks for reporting it anyway.

I'm not taking any user feature requests right now, I already have a long list of possible features and no time to work on them. Release 4 may happen when I have more time to complete it.

For languages: if you have the game originally and fully translated (local version) - contact me on ModDb.

From now on, this thread will be only for bug reports and problems. Positive or encouraging posts are also welcome, of course - thanks smellysprouts, barbefolle! I may still not be able to answer quickly, so for this and anything else - consider posting in the ModDb page instead (which I check more often). You don't need to have an account there, just make sure your question is not off-topic.

Sorry if this is not a reply to report a bug or anything, but I just wanted to say I donated a small amount to encourage you to never quit developing this patch. You have no idea how much I loved to see this patch or how hyped I was for 1.1 HD. And I bet a lot of people were too if their favorite childhood game got revived in HD.

I want to say, thank you for creating this patch and being awesome. Sorry if I was a bit of a jerk back in the day, haha.

With the 1440p support, bug fixes and other changes this patch is perfect. Thanks for continuing to develop your patch. The 1440p support was the thing I was holding out for!

Hello, I have an issue with UPatch.

Whenever I try and download a full backup of AoE 1 with UPatch HD installed, it says "Files missing or installation corrupted!" And I have to re-install UPatch. I ran the SETUPREG.exe

Is there a way to fix the files when I download a full backup or do I have to re-extract AoE 1 files and re-install UPatch?

Hello.

Thanks for an amazing patch. But it doesn't work for me

WinXP-32, AoE Gold Edition, Upatch 1.1. Game just doesn't start at all from launcher. Without Upatch game runs flawlessly.

A little update: I've read that AoE Gold doesn't write installation info into registry correctly, and there is no expansion (RoR) info in it. That in turn prevents UPatch from running. Can this be the case?

AOE Gold works perfectly with UPatch HD, I've tested all AOE:ROR versions and they all work fine, provided you install the game from original installation files. The only problem I know of is game installation stuck at 100% (usually Windows 8.x/10) and there is an easy solution for that, posted in the help section of the official site.

@Nyktouros: I have no idea why you can't launch the game, the patch is tested under Windows XP and it works with no problems. If you can't install the patch, try installing .NET Framework 4 for Windows XP first (although it should be automatically installed with the patch). But if you installed the patch successfully there is no reason for it not to run (if registry was the problem, then you wouldn't be able to install). Try disabling your antivirus and reinstall again - follow the instructions at the bottom of this page (under "What to do if you failed the file check...").

I don't visit here often, but I try to visit my ModDB page once in a while, so you can post there.

I signed up here and posted once a while ago. Thanks for your hard work. I went from the 1.1 2nd Release to the 4th version recently. Love the new Launcher.

Unfortunately my bug is after playing the mod once or twice, upon exiting, Launcher.exe has removed itself, the shortcut on the desktop loses it's icon and can't locate original exe. EMPIRESX.EXE gives an instant error message of files corrupt. When trying to uninstall uPatch it claims it can't write/remove files due to permission. Once I restart Windows I am able to uninstall it, but vanilla Age won't usually work.

I have to reinstall the whole game and then uPatch to get 1 game in before it breaks again. The only visible issue inside the actual game is when navigating the title screen such upon clicking a menu button, the screen will advance forward to a black screen, if you press Escape it reveals the screen you clicked on is there, underneath the black, and after being sent backwards a menu, everything works fine (although there is always some delay as if pressing a menu button is making the computer really work). I believe this issue is one of the standard problems people get and is tolerable as it's easy to fix each time.

Windows 7. Updated. Avast. Nvidia (something recent) i3
This happens on both Gold Edition and Collector's Edition.

This is the first I hear of such issue, it's not common and it's very weird (hard to imagine what could cause that). I use the same Windows version as you, never had such problems. It seems like something prevents the game from running properly, must be something on your PC. There is no other explanation for the game to run ok once then break. The issues you describe with black screen are also unusual, could be caused by a problem with video card drivers or settings. Try disabling antivirus and closing any other programs before starting the game. Try updating your video card drivers - from the official NVIDIA site, not from Windows update; make sure you turn off some settings like Superscaling or anything similar (if you have them). That's all I can think of, wish I could help you more.

Does this happen with UPatch HD 1.1 R2 or only 1.1 R4?

If anyone feels like chiming in here, that'd be great.

Quickly, I played AOE when I was kid sometimes, but never learned more than the basics, in my teens I knew more about AOEII than I ever did the first game, and now I play II a lot on online, learned the techniques, stats and strategies.

The only time I play the 1st AOE now is rare, always with this Upatch mod, and I want to play more, so I've slightly adapted to the techniques to play this game, as it's a bit different to the 2nd one. In saying that, I still haven't figured out how to be normally successful, and am really slow at building my Empire.

So apart from any advice, my question is how come the campaign and expansions seems so incredibly difficult to play on the 'moderate' difficulty level, and too simple and boring on 'easy'?

I know this is the age old problem with both games, as well as the AI and difficulty in general. It's either too easy, or far too hard. Is this partially caused by the Upatch?

Another thing connected to this is it seems to take ages to complete a level, such as progressing through a map in the campaign, its geographically difficult considering the 50 population limit for one thing, but that's how it was intended. How do I move on faster whilst trying to maintain my villager economy and military presence? Meanwhile the AI is at the highest Age from what seems like the start and are sending their heaviest units to my base while I'm just getting starting.

Perhaps my playing of AOEII has made it difficult to understand how to play successfully in the first game? I understand this mod is mainly aimed at multiplayer.

Well, best way to learn is to watch videos in youtube. There aren't as many as those of AoE II but the vietnamese community uploads a lot (see multiplayer section here). They are in vietnamese, but you need to watch, not to listen to the comments, I think :P

So, I created a custom resolution in the NVIDIA Control Panel (1920x1080; my native is 1366x768) and it works perfectly on AoE II.

Is there a way to enable this resolution in RoR with UPatch 1.1 R4?

I have encountered several problems :

- I can't pick the file location........... So the installation doesn't seem to WORK ... Age of Empires is NOT in my program files, it is in DATA. (windows 10)

- Now that I have installed (after moving the files to program files, then moved back to Data)... it says that the files are corrupted and I can't play anymore, nor do I see any way of uninstalling. I ****ed up my whole game.

UPatch modding system supports modifying graphics.drs, interfac.drs (respectively inter_up.drs), sounds.drs, and do support also terrain.drs and border.drs?

EDIT: Licaytra Dark, tried you to rename game folder, where game files/folders resides to "AOE" ? It worked for me.

New member here, been playing AoE since it was new (though nowhere near the level of some of you guys, holy smokes!!).


Just discovered the UPatch HD--what a godsend, totally breathes new life into the game! I don't know who aoe_scout it, but: well done, sir!!


One question, I hope it's not too noob: I can't get the groups to work like I want. I can make a group no problem, and I can select a group by number no problem. Often I like the select-by-number key option... but, sometimes I don't, and I've got way too much muscle memory to simply "forget" how I'm used to doing it.

Is there a way to recover the ability to select an entire group by selecting any one member of that group?

as for multiplayer "Most multiplayer clients (like GameRanger, Garena, Tunngle) are fully compatible with UPatch HD, only those that use modified version of the game (like Voobly) are not compatible."

I'll be hosting a Upatch game on GameRanger on Sundays as Proseon5; i'd prefer to play my mod in that game, but if someone really wants to play regular Upatch, I'll be up for that.

I have already read about the usage of Upatch in different multiplayer clients. I have tried to use it on Game ranger, but almost no one uses it. In fact, about Upatch, I'm afraid that people only use it to play single player. Talking with an age 1 moderator at voobly, he told me that it's possible to put Upatch in voobly. Here is the conversation:

me: Hi man. Since you are a Voobly moderator, I want to know if you or anybody of the voobly staff can make a looby to play RoR with the Upacth (https://upatch-hd.weebly.com/ ). Thanks.

him: ill bring it up at the next meeting. Thats the best i can do.

him: Bring me some players who help us with the compatibility patch integration and we could look into it.

and the origonal creator needs to pm me with permission to use his patch on voobly.

In my UPatch HD intallation the "gaia" cheat does not work. Anyone else with that problem?
