Welcome to the AoEH Designers' Board, a thread aimed to gather the last active designers and keep them in contact. The Board shows in alphabetical order people who are currently working on AoE/RoR scenarios and campaigns. To join the Board simply post here and give some little details about your work, such as the game (AoE or RoR), the setting (Historical, Fiction or Fantasy) and the subject (what is your campaign about?). This is also a good place to ask help to other designers, seek for playtesters, post your screenshots, and unleash your design frustrations.

Updates on your progresses are optional, but highly welcome, so if you are working on a multi-level campaign you may post here as you finish a particular scenario, and your status will be updated. Once your game is published, it will be listed among the 'Released Projects'.

Or he could annoy us to death by making his next campaign italian only. ;D

Then everyone would probably learn Italian to be able to play it.

I have a lot to do remaking River God. Lucky I didn't make too many scenarios. It's mainly the first and the third that need work, especially on the map. I must be one of the first designers to remake part of a campaign before I submit it.

Perhaps Bismarrk or Freak will review the campaign, since I won't be playing it for a while.

I dunno why I always confuse you two.

EDIT:

I did what you told me Mero, but it still doesn't work. :-/

Does nobody here know how to make the enemy constantly attack a computer town?

EDIT 2:

As long as I can't solve my problems with my ex-contest-entry I'll have to work on my other project I guess.

So, you can set the status to remaking the first scenario (I somehow don't find it good enough ;o ).

The red side attacks you constantly, and I just set the AI to build heaps of guys and the personality to SUPER AGRESSIVE.

You'll find that an enemy will attack once it has its attack group filled. The attack group is like a group of specific soldiers that the computer orders around at once. It has a minimum and maximum number, and the attack group will not leave until it fits inside that number. So if it had an AI that tells it to make 3 archers and 4 axemen it will make those 7 units, and gather them into a group. If minimum attack group size is 8, it will probably just use them to defend.

Also, the group is not considered gathered until it is within a close proximity, although you can alter the gather distance number too. I would suggest making minimum and maximum attack group size the same, and making it the number of units the AI trains. Make it a variety for a strong attack, e.g. Chariot archers, a siege weapon, a priest, and some hoplites. CPUs that don't train siege weapons are useless at killing each other, since they just keep making towers and the attack group dies out too easily.

If you want two groups to attack, have them attacking each other at the start, and set a high response distance. That will just set them at each others throats from the word go. Think of them as two chickens. You want them to fight, so rub them against each other and then let them loose. Maybe stick a building in the enemy town that they slowly destroy? Give them plenty of resources too, houses, upgrades, that sort of thing.

@ Upnotep:

Yeah, I played it (and failed again :/). That's what I'm thinking about. However, a problem I noticed myself might be that the besieged town's AI is too strong. It makes legions, cavs, (babylonian) priests and builds lots of (babylonian) towers aswell as war galleys.

I probably should tone town on it a bit.

You also said I should use the Super-Aggressive file. That's not a good idea, because the enemy besieging the town consists of two civs, which seem to "want" to attack each other, but can't. (also called "shakey-dance-syndrome) I tried out Aggressive, with which it works better.

@ Richard:

That's some kind of problem. I want the AI to train units constantly (just like in the Khmer legacy the yellows in the first scenario, for example), but attack constantly also.

I already set the attack response value to 100.

I might change the AI a bit, because it seems the orange player (besieged town) is too strong.

At the moment grey makes Broad Swordsmen, (Hittite) Bowmen, (Hittite) Chariot Archers, Chariots, and Phalanxes. I also gave them some cats to start with. Teal makes War galleys, and has (Phoenician) cat triremes to start with.

So, the solution might be
a) to change the AIs: make orange weaker, while making grey and teal stronger.
b) to change the personality file like you said.
c) to give orange sentry towers (instead of guard towers) to start with (?)

Thanks for the help.

EDIT:

I did the following:

-Orange now doesn't upgrade to Legion and Ballista tower, and trains Scouts instead of Cavalry.
-I changed the personality file like Richard told me.

Still it doesn't work. :-(

What am I doing wrong?

Grrr I have a full stretch of land in my scenario which is of no use to me and I am at loss of what to do with it. I'll describe the map if you dont understand; to the south there is an estate and a forest which runs up the east of the map until it stops at the mountains. To the left of the mountains there is a walled city and just below that there is a path that joins the estate to the town. Now, on the left of the path there is well... nothing. I need something to put there. I was thinking maybe small villages or maybe farms but I dont think that would look right. Any ideas?

EDIT* Do you think putting short plot enhancing (I couldn't think of another way of describing them) scenarios that are short (about 30 seconds) and do nothing but involve the player more. For example, instead of reading about a horse ambush in a forest in the scenario instructions, you can acctually play as a small group of horse archers ambushing a group of soldiers in a forest. Is this a good idea or should I just leave it as text in the instructions.

@ Gaius: You could put a swamp to that area.

What you probably mean is called "ingame cutscenes". If they look right and the player understands them then it is a good idea. You should describe what happened in the scenario instructions of the one after that cutscene scen though.

Yeah I would probably write something like "After the final shaft was shot and the final cut was made, Jason gathered his men and rode on through the damp and lush forest, leaving a path of destruction behind him..." and carry on with the dialogue in the next scenario.

I tried the swamp idea quite a while back but it didn't seem right having a swamp dumped in the middle of a friendly (though this campaign is about war, it starts off during a time of peace) and prospering town and estate where the whole area is supposed to be built up. I also wanted to avoid using water on the map because its not really near the coast (there is a small waterfall in the forest leading from a small lake and a couple of ponds thats all). I would of thought that a king wouldn't build a town so close to a swampy/marshy area because it serves no real purpose and even if he did it would of probably have been cleared. Maybe I should expand the town to the north...

Either that, or maybe make a little desert area with lots of terrain cracks and dead trees.

If you're still not happy with that idea, I think a pond would be nice (I dunno what you have against them :P).

I dont av owt against ponds lol. I've been thinking, why would the enemy attack a town merely because of the objective of the nation he is apart of (to conquer the known world) when it serves no strategic purpose. So instead of it just being a normal town im going to give it some useful purpose... maybe a mine in that area that needs filling or maybe i could elevate the whole town so it looks more like a fortress of some kind and expand it into the area.

I'm stuck with my campaign... because of 2 reasons

- School keeps me busy, and I can advance almost only in the weekends.

- I need the location of "Lutai". Without it, I can't go on with the campaign. I've kept searching it, and I still don't know if it is a palace or a city .

So, the campaign will not be released at least until August.

Does anyone know why writing isn't researched when I start a map in the iron age? In RoR writing is always researched like all techs from previous ages, yet in AoE it isn't.

You could use Writing for a trick maybe.

I'm stuck aswell, still couldn't get the enemy to besiege the town. :/

For Richard's question, I don't know.

I cared about that when I tried to make my third scenario. It was a problem, but then I used flags to see the ally. However, the scenario is going to be completely different to what I was thinking at first.

I am still available for playtesting - your second scenario is great, I can't think of any changes needed.

As this is the designers board it seems to be a good place to say something about the website I'm making. It is going to be on hex editors and changing the language.dll like the article Andrea's website only more in depth.
Also if anyone has any thoughts on what could be in my site feel free to tell me.

Anyway, maybe a moderator could update the Designers' Board?

@ Dark Archer: You could write an article about editing language files aswell or ask Andrea if you can put his on your site. Good luck with it!

@ Upnotep: I guess that's needed. :/ Sadly.

An article maybe I will but for now I will work on a website. As for Andrea and his site I won't need it I have a really old site of my family's I'm going to redo.

Man, AoEH isn't the same without ol' Andrea. This topic won't be easy to keep functioning without him, since he was the one who updated it all the time. A moderator can edit it, but I don't think any of them will be taking up that role full time. Let's hope he comes back soon, otherwise I'm going to Italy.
