Welcome to the AoEH Designers' Board, a thread aimed to gather the last active designers and keep them in contact. The Board shows in alphabetical order people who are currently working on AoE/RoR scenarios and campaigns. To join the Board simply post here and give some little details about your work, such as the game (AoE or RoR), the setting (Historical, Fiction or Fantasy) and the subject (what is your campaign about?). This is also a good place to ask help to other designers, seek for playtesters, post your screenshots, and unleash your design frustrations.

Updates on your progresses are optional, but highly welcome, so if you are working on a multi-level campaign you may post here as you finish a particular scenario, and your status will be updated. Once your game is published, it will be listed among the 'Released Projects'.

Bitmaps don't have to be master pieces anyway.

As long as they're half-way correct and have a few units, it's fine.

Oh, by the way, I reccommend downloading Fudgy's bitmap collection. This will make pasting units onto your map a lot easier.

The scenarios are for Age of empires as this is my first attempt at a small campaign. The setting is somewhat historical.
This is the story of King Gilgamesh who lived and reigned around 2700 BC. Has a wall built around his city known as the wall of Uruk. Gilgamesh wanted desperately to live forever like a god. He refused to accept his destiny to die. If it were his lot to die, he wanted to perform great deeds so that his name would never be forgotten.
Enkidu comes to life in the wilderness. He is actually made to be Gilgamesh's equal.
Enkidu wants to meet and challenge Gilgamesh to a contest of strength.Becomes Gilgamesh's best friend and accompanys him on his dangerous journeys.
Gilgameshand Enkidu journey to the great Cedar Forest and cut down all the cedar trees. To do this, they will need to kill the Guardian of the Cedar Forest, the great demon, Humbaba the Terrible.
Ishtar, the goddess of love, wants to marry him. He refuses, quite rudely. Ishtar is hurt and furious and she goes to her father, Anu, demanding that he send the Bull of Heaven (drought) to punish Gilgamesh. Anu sends the Bull of Heaven, but Enkidu catches it by the horns, and Gilgamesh kills it.
The gods are angered at Gilgamesh and Enkidu and have a counsel to decide which should die. Enkidu is chosen to be the one.
Gilgamesh is distraught with grief and denial of death. He wants to learn the secret of how to avoid death. Gilgamesh continues in his search for Utnapishtim , the boatman Urshanabi takes him across the Sea of Death to the place where Utnapishtim lives with his wife. After a complicated boat-trip, Urshanabi brings Gilgamesh to Utnapishtim,
Gilgamesh returns to Uruk with the boatman Urshanabi, and points out to him the mighty walls; this is the proper work of a human being, not the search for eternal life.

You should play A Short History of Lost Sumeria. The Gilgamesh level in that is very good. However, Andrea has done such a thorough and excellent job of it, it would be difficult to recreate the level for AoE without it being very similar. Perhaps if you haven't started yet you could play this campaign first, though if you do play the level it would become hard not to copy it too much, so I don't know.

You can do the same with my projects if you want, they're frozen for now. I haven't abandoned them completely, I just haven't worked on them for over 6 months, and the designers board is pretty full as it is.

I have been doing a lot of work on FoN again though after a long break. The friendly newbs are now making markets and government centers in record numbers, and I've completed their per file to include the tribute request as well, so we're getting to the final stages. I'm trying to do everything I can though to fix the lag (for me, anyway), it's becoming a bit of a problem so I need to find the best ways of reducing it.

I will play "A Short History of Lost Sumeria." with regards to the Gilgamesh level. I searched through alot of the downloads to see if there were any mention of him. I didn't take into concideration the scenario levels. With that I will take note to be extra careful not to copy or come close to Andra's storyline. That would do me no justice and look unfavorably in his eyes. Thanks for the input.

Good luck then, may Ishtar be with you But... why don't you consider to make a campaign instead of a single scenario? The Gilgamesh Epic contains enough stuff to make 3-4 scenarios out of it. You could even show Gilgamesh's youth, when he was arrogant and oppressed his people harshly, not to speak about the hallucinant 12th tablet, "Gilgamesh, Enkidu and the Netherworld"

By your will, my friends. Time to refresh the Board, so I have also removed the entries of Prism (a true meteor), Sol Shadow (who disappeared soon after the Shoreview Contest), Emp Charlemagne and Upnotep (aeons have passed since their last messages). I'll probably contact Fudgy and Borruma to know if they projects are still going on, otherwise I'll remove them. Concerning Kazaniwarman11, I've received a message from him in my Guestbook, so I must assume he's still working on something.

I've discovered quite a neat dynamics/puzzle trick today.

Did you know that scout's LOS increases when you go up an age? I'd always known that their LOS increases somehow, but I didn't connect it with going up an Age. About a month or two ago I made the direct connection.

You can use this quite effectively. You could convert an enemy scout in a FF scenario as an important spotter unit, if that player is in the Iron Age. Remember LOS stays with converted units, like speed, so you could for example convert a Macedonian mercenary with a 2 LOS, or train Mac. centurions using Andrea's neat conversion trick method.

You can also use the LOS increase as a puzzle thing, e.g. finding extra units. I think the best use for it would be as a hidden unit, where it is a dynamics trick. You find a whole new base upon advancing an age, which is not really possible without using the scout method. Best thing is the scout can be hidden in some forests, and you may not even know it is there (put it under a tower using overlapping .dat, for example).

There you have it, another new trick in AoE's 8th year. I encourage you to use it in your scenarios as you wish, I hope to see it in action some day.

Yes, I knew that. If you look at the last scenario of the Hatti Archive, you will see that you start in the Iron Age, however your Scouts have a normal LOS. That was made intentionally with Gaia Scouts (which don't gain upgrades), so to make exploration a little harder

Quoted from PhatFish:

I think Darky is talking about those sharp transitions between land and water which sometimes appear when you move the terrain brush really fast. Something similar happens with the 'elevation on water' trick.

It's actually neither of those. Like I said, it can't be rendered in any way through the terrain option

I think we'll have a small contest, just for fun.

The first one to find the correct picture of the new terrain, which is buried in an old thread in this forum, will be the first to receive a very special new design template. It won't feature the new terrain, but something else

You can learn a LOT just browsing through those old threads, and those winy "Ingo, how do you do this??!?!?" threads are worth a laughter as well.

For example, a while ago I discovered a Photon Man and Horses template made by someone in a thread which never got released, but it was useless anyway since scn_tc unlocked most of the beta units.

It won't feature the new terrain, but something even better, you'll like it, thrust me.

About the modpack thing, I made a beta forest mod, which changes several trees to their beta graphics. It isn't released yet, I plan to do so after the AoE version is finished (RoR is already done tho). Expect to see it in the granary any time soon.

Another hint: The thread was made in 2001.

Really thanks for the help.

Correct! Rug_Might, leave your e-mail, and I'll mail you the template ASAP. Be sure to carefully read the scenario instructions before designing anything with it.

Just to clear this out: I didn't create the new terrain through editing a .scn file in a text-editor. There is another way...

Hmmm, interesting thread. It was unusual to find that the old Geocities site wasn't a dead link like all the other old things from the past, I was actually able to download that save game. It was interesting, though very buggy. I wouldn't actually describe that black area as a terrain, but more like a break in the fabric of the scenario, where someone has cut it in half and moved it over (like something out of the Matrix... The units would skip right across it!)

It would be very messy if used unskillfully, but if you could use it effectively, and control the formation of it, you could hide the areas you didn't want, and actually use it as like a magic portal that snaps you to another part of the map, which would be a pretty neat trick. I have no idea how that stuff is created, never seen anything like it before. I suppose as long as it doesn't crash the game, and can be created with some level of control, it would be a nice effect to use.

It can be created with some level of control. Working out the bugs in my new templates is my number one priority. If the new terrain would make the game crash, I wouldn't have posted about it here. Same goes for the new template I sent to Rug_Might. It won't be as messy as on those 2 pictures, but will be used in a new, effective way.

I'm sure most of you know how to use tame lions to make a timed appearance, without the need for any towers (and the resultant save-game difficulties).

This trick is also useful though for an invisible CPU-CPU diplomacy change, one without tribute demands, and without the player having to activate it. We can use the final tame lion as a blockade between two CPU players. One player may have a blind lame priest, while the other may have Hero Scipio (closest to the tame lion). Once the last tame lion is killed, Scipio will be free to attack the BLP (and the alligator too, if he likes) and then the owner of the BLP will change diplomacy to enemy for Scipio's player - this could be used to make a player attack an otherwise peaceful village (you don't know about Scipio, do you

Another useful thing is that we can use the new overlapping units to place many tame lions on top of each other - this is a very good space-saver!

Now I didn't realize we could do that. Now it just might be possible to make a timer for A Battle In Memphis.

What? I don't get it... why Scipio?

While sausages are tasty, you might cut your finger with that pencil over there.

Well, Scipio is a melee unit, and he has a good LOS. It doesn't really matter which unit you use, but they must be melee, or they will just fire at the enemy unit from the start. The trick with this method of diplomacy change is to have a melee unit unable to attack the other player, while the other player is allied to them. When the melee unit attacks, they change diplomacy, allowing their units elsewhere to attack, for example, some enemy units. Remember that the enemy units must be peaceful ones, like villies or houses, or if they are not, they must not be able to see the player who is allied to them at first (e.g. centurions attacked by heavy horse archers).
