Welcome to the AoEH Designers' Board, a thread aimed to gather the last active designers and keep them in contact. The Board shows in alphabetical order people who are currently working on AoE/RoR scenarios and campaigns. To join the Board simply post here and give some little details about your work, such as the game (AoE or RoR), the setting (Historical, Fiction or Fantasy) and the subject (what is your campaign about?). This is also a good place to ask help to other designers, seek for playtesters, post your screenshots, and unleash your design frustrations.

Updates on your progresses are optional, but highly welcome, so if you are working on a multi-level campaign you may post here as you finish a particular scenario, and your status will be updated. Once your game is published, it will be listed among the 'Released Projects'.

I'm thinking I might try my hand at a historical campaign/scenario. Currently I'm doing some research on the Kingdom of Kush, I'm trying to find if they had any majour battles or if they did anything exiting. I'll post updates if I find anything.

Historical campaigns are a good diversion, I'll probably make one for a break once we finish FoN (though that's probably going to be around June next year it seems, if I still design then...)

They are also good when you just want to do some designing without have to make up to much of a story (that is my current problem with TGGA, I need resons why you are do what you need to do).

And yes, historical campaigns are cool. I've never been designing anything else actually.

Hi Dark Avenger. I haven't loaded up AOE Heaven in awhile, this place is active! I can send you a scenario file for a ROR campaign if you want to test it out. Seems to play well, just need feedback. In 2035 or whenever I'm finished I'll search for a playtester or two. Wish I had time to playtest myself!

Well that leads to my second problem, I don't know what to make the General and his men do.

Anyway my Hist. Cpn. will be about the Kingdom of Kush set in either 1000 BC when the New Kingdom collasped and the Kush conquered upper Nubia which had been owned by the Egyptians for thousands of years, or about 750 BC when the Kush ruled Egypt for about 100 years before the Assyrians pushed them out. Now just to find more information these specific time periods.

Update:

I have found a website that has all the Nubian Kings and Queens on it and it says that King Piankhy (who finished conquering all of Epygt after his farther started) was portrayed as a ruler that liked to make treaties instead of going to war and killing. It also says in another part of the site that the Nubians restored Egypt in someways by building a new pyramid. This could make for some interesting scenarios but I still need to do some research into the period when all of Nubia was controlled by the Kush at about 1000 BC. OT: What does BCE mean? I've seen it a few times during my research and I want to know what it means.

Thanks for the site LittleFreak, it is going to help with finding out more about the Kings and Queens of the Kush and a lot of other little information that could help.

Also it will be for AoE because I won't need any of the new units or civs and as the Kush are very Egyptian I'll use Egypt as the main civ.

Yes I've followed a lot of links to different articles and they all help. I also found out on another website I was looking at that one of the periods I was looking at doesn't seem to have much information on it so I think it will be based on the Kush taking over Egypt. It's title right now will be Kush the Restorers of Egypt.

Thanks for the site Rich Parker. I probably won't be able to use it for my actual playing part of my campaign but I'll need it for the history of the Kingdom of Kush.

I've also decided that my first name won't be any good for the time the campaign is set in so I'm going to change it to another name which I haven't decided on yet. As well as that I'm going to start my campaign part way though The Stela of Piye in one of the citys where Piye made a sacrifice. As for a release date I hope to finish the first scenario by the end of next month (Jan) then I'll decide on the rest of the campaign's release dates.

Okay guys, here's what's going on:

(I found this info while looking at the Rise and Fall website)

User-posted images on forums temporarily filtered

Recently an exploit was found out in the wild by a researcher on the Bugtraq mailing list. It involves specially crafted WMF (Windows Meta Fils), which when parsed by Windows XP, causes Windows to execute program code. When it was found by the researcher on the internet, it was presented on a webpage that included a WMF image file in the HTML source code. The file in turn successfully installed a trojan onto a fully-patched Windows XP SP2 system.

Another researcher on the Bugtraq mailing list has discovered that because windows recognizes files by parsing file headers, the malicious WMF file could be renamed with other image extensions ( i.e. .jpg, .jpeg, .gif, .png, etc.) and Windows will still parse it as a WMF file. Thus, it is possible for a user with malicious intentions to post images to our forums (or to any websites that displays user-submitted images) and cause damage to other forum users.

Therefore, we will temporarily convert all user-posted images on the forums to links until a patch is released by Microsoft. Since there will always be people who can't / won't update their machines for various reasons (laziness, warezed windows install, they're on dialup, etc.), this temporary measure only helps to stop the initial wave of exploiters and give users a chance to be exposed to news of the problem and a chance to patch their system.

Wow. It is amazing what can be done with technology these days. I have desided that the attack an Memphis will have a scenario of its own and the one of the VCs will be that you have send some soldiers and priests to the temples of Memphis.

Take a bitmap off of one of Andrea's or FL's or whoever's scenarios. Would it still be good? God, yeah!

I've always thought using MsPaint was a real pain. I thought that making a bitmap made no sense. If you just fool around with different tools something'll work. I'm quite partial to Paint Shop with its "layers" option.

Yes but it will be very unlikely that that you will get a 5 point story. I'm not trying to be mean, but could you try to make bitmaps like in The Tai Gun? Just use units from the game (download Fudgy's Collection of Bitmaps or make your own) and a MS paint's spray can to make them. And if need be people here are willing to help. It can take time but it really makes you feel good when you are done.

Yes. They would still be good, but they wouldn't be as good. Some people might think with out a bitmap only the story's score is affected but that isn't true. A bitmap can affect the story's score, the creativity's score, the playability's score and maybe, depending on the scenario, the balance's score. So scenarios don't have to have a bitmap to be great but it does help unless they have had no work put into them in which case they can be annoying. But just remember if you put a map in base it on the scenarios map. I hope this helps.

It's much better to learn to make bitmaps. You can leave them out if you wish, but then you can also decide not to learn AI or map design, and the more you don't know the weaker the campaign will be. Making a bitmap the quality of Ingo's and many others earlier bitmaps is fine, nothing more is expected really. You also gain some general imaging skills, which applies to real life and not just AoE.

For making the units you should use SLP studio and the printscreen button. Using SLP studio makes bitmap making a lot easier, trust me. If you need any help learning to use that program, be sure to post.

The bitmap will mainly affect the story score, probably only being worth about 0.25-0.5 points, usually being more noticable for being missing if the rest of the campaign is very good. It shouldn't affect any other scores though, unless the bitmap is particularly creative, where it could affect creativity. It isn't a factor for playability or balance, since any confusion/difficulty related to not knowing where to go is really a story issue. Perhaps in extreme cases it could make the scenario impossible to play if the instructions are unclear, and therefore 'difficult', but this would also require a lack of written instructions as well. In this case its almost impossible not to mark down playability, since you can't really play it as intended, and the balance score also becomes entangled. It's very difficult to review in these cases.

I give you a hint. First try to make one. It doesn't have to be special, but it should have a few units and be correct according to your map. When you're finished, upload it and post it in Dark Archer's screenshots topic or here and the guys here can give you some feedback.

For help, you should have a look at the AOE Carthography Workshop or the article in the siege workshop.

Just try it, ok?

Just want to say that I still work on my projects wich are heavier than I thought and gave myself the magic deadline of 15 May 2007 (AOEH 10th Anniversary, of course) to upload many of thoses ones.

And here's my suggest: everyone who has a busy Life or/and seems to never see the end of their works should gives themselve this same cool deadline!.

It's less than 1 year and half and as Time goes by quickly, I think it's a decent designing objective after all.

My life isn't very busy right now so I'll try to complete my scenario A Battle at Memphis by January the 21 Adamant Hoplite birthday. My progress so far is good I've started on The Nile and the walls of Memphis and I've downloaded the over lapping buildings dat so now I'll be able to make the dock and the boats you have to "capture" then I'll start work on the city of Memphis itself.

Dark Archer:

How many scn did you expect to include into your cpn?

Currently I don't know. I'll either have one scn which looks at the battle at Memphis or I'll have many scns looking at the whole of The Stela of Piye. But for now I'll try to complete A Battle at Memphis. Also has anyone else noticed the strange bug with the OL dat that makes the buildings not quite fit the map grid properly?

What do mean? Everything stays on the grid for me.

I usually don't turn the grid on because it makes the ingame grid appear (which looks rather weird) and I haven't used the OL dat a lot yet, so I didn't notice.

I think to know about what you talk Dark Archer, you mean when you move a building or a tree and trying to replace it at the original place but you can't. You have to switch to the original DAT if you want to move the stuff at it right place.

The way I found it was by making a 3 by 3 level 4 elevation then tryed to put a temple on top but it would let it be placed there which caused me to turn the grid on to see what the problem was and it appears the buildings are out a small amout. To see what I mean you can make a 3 by 3 grass patch in a larger desert area then try to place a builing so it covers all the grass, if you have the same problems as I'm having you'll see that you can not cover all of the grass.

Do you know I'm taking about the gird with the red squares?

Yeah that is it. As you can see it is only half on some of the squares.

I actually use and also consider the OL DAT as a decorative tool and I suggest strongly to anyone to work with their original DAT file first to place buildings and trees or anything else that you put in a decorative way (like fences).

After that, install OL DAT to use the stuff you can't have with the original DAT for decorative adding(new bones, swallows, rubbles, overlap effect, etc)

I am working on a historical fiction campaign about the Assyrians for RoR. I have finished 3 of the scenarios.
I need some help with bitmaps--I'm trying to make a good bitmap of Mesopotamia (shows a little of Egypt, Tigris and Euphrates, eastern part of Mediterranean, north-western part of Persian Gulf) but I'm not able to draw anything in proportion. I tried making a grid on the map and going square by square, but even then it's very difficult, probably in part because I can find a good map to use that has the right dimensions. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

I guess you already looked at the bitmap article in the siege workshop. Well, making bitmaps is not an easy thing, but, if your scenario doesn't cover the whole mesopotamia, you could also make it smaller. I'm working on the same area (however my campaign is about the Kassites) and once I get to the stage that I'll need bitmaps (if I ever will) I'll only include the area that the scenario plays in.

There are some good bitmap makers over here though. Maybe one of them will lend a helping hand.

Thanks. Hopefully I'll be able to finish this campaign in a few months, but it depends on how busy I am. I did look at the article in the siege workshop. I'll try using a smaller area, and if I keep at it I might produce a decent map. I probably shouldn't expect anything like the Greece map in Frank Steidel's article on my first try, but I'll gradually get better
