Welcome to the AoEH Designers' Board, a thread aimed to gather the last active designers and keep them in contact. The Board shows in alphabetical order people who are currently working on AoE/RoR scenarios and campaigns. To join the Board simply post here and give some little details about your work, such as the game (AoE or RoR), the setting (Historical, Fiction or Fantasy) and the subject (what is your campaign about?). This is also a good place to ask help to other designers, seek for playtesters, post your screenshots, and unleash your design frustrations.

Updates on your progresses are optional, but highly welcome, so if you are working on a multi-level campaign you may post here as you finish a particular scenario, and your status will be updated. Once your game is published, it will be listed among the 'Released Projects'.

How do you make those little circle pond like things? I could really use them in my scenario.

Place a shallow tile first - get the one you want - one that looks close to water without any reeds and plants in it. Then place the tree stumps, deleting ones that don't go in the right place, and going out of the units menu after you use delete. If you are designing without the patch for AoE you won't really be able to do this because the shallow tile will be the first thing to get deleted.

Thanks for that, I want to use as much eye-candy as I can

EDIT* I discovered (or atleast, I hope I discovered it first) something cool using the new 'Hidden Units' mod. Here's a screenshot.

Look, LOOK! The corpses are on fire! HAHAHA!

It looks better in the game. The fire actually moves so it's more realistic. I'm going to use this in my campaign. Has this already been done before?

Considering that ASHOLS was the first campaign to be processed with Scenario_t_c's dat, and considering that I did not use projectiles in any of my maps, it's safe to say you have invented it.

lol... I've just realized that the abbreviation of "A Short History Of Lost Sumeria" vaguely sounds like an insult, doesn't it!?

Haha, I thought the same when reading it Andrea.

By the way, the problem of your trick is that it makes the player unable to save. That is due to that annoying bug that makes AOE crash if you save a game when projectiles are on screen.

Yes, don't use those missiles unless the scenario is so short that the player won't realistically need to save, and make a note of it clearly in the instructions. They can't be moved either, so you're probably permanently stuck with them once they are set down. I'll complete the missiles set's explanations soon.

Already Guessed?

Just use the Missile - Catapult Stone Fire (the normal one) with some rocks, and you don't need to make a burning house as camp fire.

I've thought of solutions for a couple of problems using this trick would cause.

1. The corpses eventually decay, leaving a rather pointless effect. Solution: Put Bones in the pile also.

2. The player cannot save. Solution: The scenario is a basic 'escape from point A to point B' game. With lots of eye-candy to make up for the lack of skill involved.

I was just wondering. I read about a mod where the player can overlap buildings. Would this be possible for Gaia missles? Then I could concentrate more fire in one place.

I'm starting work on a short historical AoE campaign, "The Peak of Minoan Civilization".

This will be my first project, inspired by a recent visit to Crete and its archaeological sites. It will be 2 SCNs long and will use the modified DAT. The 1st SCN will be based on the Protopalatial Period (that is, before the palaces are devastated by an earthquake) and the 2nd SCN based on the Neopalatial Period (that is, after they are rebuilt only to be destroyed again by a massive volcano and the Myceneans).

At the end of the 1st SCN I would like to create a simulation of the earthquake. My idea was to use a timed diplomacy change to trigger the destruction of the palaces via hidden Photon Men. Unfortunately if the red blasts are seen the effect is spoiled. Perhaps someone has a more convincing idea?

This sounds very interesting. For an earthquake, well, I can't think of much visually or in terms of sound that would help much, it is very hard. Basically it's the damaging of the buildings that's the main feauture, you could use Elephants to do this and hide them behind trees and lock them to the ground - the elephant attack may be a little like an earthquake sound (or just a good giveway that you are using elephants

Looking in the editor, a Nuke Trooper works okay, you just need to place them adjacent to the building so you can't see the missile. It also has a sound that could be interpreted as an earthquake. My advice is to use whatever unit has the most appropriate sound, and make sure to hide them well behind a tree. Good luck with your campaign!

That's an interesting idea, but sadly it won't work out. There is no possible way to place units behind cliffs.

I would use nuke troopers and elephants hidden by trees and very close to the buildings. That is difficult to do, but it might be possible. Remember: You can move all kinds of units "under" gaia trees (all trees from the gaia units list) to hide them.

Good luck with the project!

Nuke Troopers work nicely up until the point the building they stand beside is destroyed, when their hideous red missiles seek another more distant target. So if Player 1 wins when the first building is destroyed (and the other objectives are fulfilled) the effect is shorter and more convincing. (If the other missions aren't complete, the player loses at that point).

You should use mostly war elephants then and only have nuke troopers in areas where there are no other targets for them to shoot.

Catapults need a target to fire, and you always hear that characteristic sound when they do, so it would be hard to make it look like a real earthquake or rockslide.

I've uploaded another version of DotM. This time I've fixed the story up so it sounds more realistic and has no spelling mistakes. I've also sent a copy to Rich because he was already re-reviewed it once.

Edit: I've finished scenario one of ASHOLS. I had to use a lot of walls to keep out my enemies but in the end I managed to destroy the yellow team and win.

You could make it look more real if whatever is damaged by the earthquake or rockslide belongs to a computer player. That way you wouldn't see the catapults and you might not hear them either, but I might be wrong about that.

I think LittleFreak did not mean the 'horn' alarm sound (which can be avoided by following Dark Archer's advice) rather the sound produced by the catapult mechanism. That can't be excluded if the Catapult is on the visible screen.

Irrelevant point of the day:

Perhaps a gunpowder explosion could be made a realistic effect. The idea would be to place a War Chest (the explosive) which must be moved to its target building in order to destroy it. When it arrives, it could capture a hidden Gaia unit. This could be shot at by a CPU Nuke Trooper, causing an explosion which will damage the target building and should produce a convincing result.

As well as that Minoan campaign, I might start a fantasy project incorporating some tricks along these lines.

Good luck. I doubt Any of my projects will be completed before the end of the year but I may get half to two thirds of the way there.

Now for my screenies

This is a small swamp area near the start of the scenario where General Arkon and his bowmen will have to jump down into a raft then climb up some cliffs into a crashed transport.

Haha, you're just like me Nanaki.

I always have dozens of ideas, but never get them done.

Nice screenshot, Dark Archer. Reminds me a lot of Uppy's style. Too bad he doesn't design anymore. Maybe add a shore fish or two though.

Got my first scn done, after weeks of mainly extremely playtesting the hell out of it.

Also, my current campaign name is now "Coming of the Ages", but this might change.

As my ImageShack account is working again I can show more screenies.

This is the start of the mountain where General Arkon and his bowmen will start their journey.

Just a bit right of the first screenshot this show a small forest area.

This is where Gerenal Arkon and his bowmen start. The General can't be seen because he off to the right where he will be talking to a spy who is helping the other group. Note that the forest and lone palm tree from this shot is the same on as can be seen in the shot above.

I've decided it would be nice to have a fantasy campaign to work on alongside my Minoan one. Besides, I have a few ideas for puzzles and effects to include.

This AoE campaign will be called "Into the Northern Mists" although I may change this later. Is it possible to put my projects on the Designers Board?

Nice screenshots, by the way.

Once Andrea Rosa checks this thread again he will put your projects up there too. You just need to wait some time.

Good luck with your stuff by the way.

I've recently discovered that if you place any rubble from the editor, it won't disappear. Unless of course something is built on it. Also, to get rid of it in the editor, put a building over it and then just delete the building.

This may be good for an ash covered ground effect for that earthquake. You never know.

I won't dissapoint you, believe me. I have literally thousands of new ideas for my scenario's right now, because of the new dat files and some of my own research on tricks and effects.

Andrea, update Duty of a Soldier to working on-Given that I have a lot of off time this week I'll probably get working on it. It has sat on hold too long, with the new .dat files, .dll editing, I should have no problems or excuses now.
