Welcome to the AoEH Designers' Board, a thread aimed to gather the last active designers and keep them in contact. The Board shows in alphabetical order people who are currently working on AoE/RoR scenarios and campaigns. To join the Board simply post here and give some little details about your work, such as the game (AoE or RoR), the setting (Historical, Fiction or Fantasy) and the subject (what is your campaign about?). This is also a good place to ask help to other designers, seek for playtesters, post your screenshots, and unleash your design frustrations.

Updates on your progresses are optional, but highly welcome, so if you are working on a multi-level campaign you may post here as you finish a particular scenario, and your status will be updated. Once your game is published, it will be listed among the 'Released Projects'.

I only play RTS games these days - I used to play the PS2 a bit but it's been well over a month since I've played it now. I may not even buy anymore consoles in the future. The only non-RTS game I've played recently is Rainbow Six. It would be interesting to see a mission where you work with allies in a timed situation like in Rainbow, and you have the option of putting them on hold, and changing between teams. Of course, it wouldn't work for AoE, but you can do it with AoK for example.

Actually I'm playtesting the whole campaign, not a specific scenario, this means I won't be ready for other playtesting for a long time.

In any case, thanks Praetor, you are very kind by offering your help, however a single person is enough to test an AoE campaign, so I can keep doing that alone.

Well, I really needed playtesters only once, when I made a QuakeII mission pack, but sadly I found none (apart from my dog), so I had to test the whole thing by myself. As you may argue, with hundreds of triggers to check out, and thousands of texture to align, that's not the same breeze as testing an AoE map...

Im trying to create one, and Im having some results that aren't too bad. Just thought I'd ask.

I make my own only if needed - I usually use Super Agressive for an active attacking enemy. For things like tributes, loyal ally behavior, changing hits until diplomacy change, blocking tributes etc I often adjust the files a little. I find passive rather useless, so I use a tweaked version called 'Less Passive' that allows them to respond to an attack as a group, but they still stand still, and further away units aren't effected.

Better have fewer scenarios (4 is a good number) and concentrate your efforts on making each scenario high quality.

If you can make the scenarios as good in quality as 4 then sure, but the reality is most people can't. You'll need to spend twice as long on it if you want to make 8 scenarios. Also, make sure you're not making many short simple levels instead of fewer longer levels. Many new designers do this, making a level based on one small idea instead of combining many.

All right. I have submitted the campaign ten minutes ago. As usual it may take a while before it goes up. Useless to say I look forward to hear your comments.

Boys I'm very happy to have finally completed this old project (its conception predates "Memories Of The Gupta Dynasty"). This may be my last submission for quite a while, don't know how much. I've made and/or remade 14 scenarios this year (considering this campaign and S.P.Q.R.), one less than 2004. Tired? You can bet it.

Now I hope to find some spare time to play some of your stuff and write some reviews. Ciao!

Don't you mean ...I've got it pencilled in...?

Anyway the main reson I'm posting here is to give an update on Turok Swamp which is the second or third scenario in The Great General Arkon. I've started work on some of the mountian region in the west but the swamp to the east has yet to be started and I'm taking screenies for a section on my website. Also now with STC's new dat files my forests are a lot easyer to make. So everything is on track for now.

Yesterday night when trying to sleep, I was thinking about something.

My problem is that always when I design I come to the point where I look at my work and think it's not good enough, so I restart.

However, if I would do smaller scenarios (based on only one or two objectives), maybe I would get something finished?

It's always better to have less scenarios and have each stand out instead of many levels, but I just don't feel I can get big levels with many objectives done.

Should I try doing smaller scenarios then?

*edit*

By the way, you should have a look at your guestbook Andrea, in case you didn't see the message I posted a week ago.

I'll be sure to do that soon, I'm just playing through all the HCC campaigns at AoK right now. There are only a few more scenarios to play now though, so I'll have some time to play soon.

Edit: Wow! Amazing trick with the 'Gods' in the first level, that was incredible! The fact that you couldn't see the units made it look so convincing. You've really learned to make full use of all the new units very quickly, and written the book on it for the rest of us, Andrea.

Thanks. But actually the first scenario did feature Nuke Troopers since the very first version: it was designed on the Photon Man Template.

Later in the campaign you will also see Black Riders. Initially they were obtained with the Catapult method, thanks to Scenario_t_c I could place them directly and save one dynamic.

Just consider this: do you really need additional military units if you just have to defend the village?

It's not that I need additional units, it's the micromanagement that keeps me from managing my economy. I always have to tell my troops to attack an enemy before they harm my villagers, make the archer run away or use my priest to heal wounded troops.

I have only tried it a couple of times, but I found I had a strong military ready to overpower them by early tool, only I hadn't mined any gold at all. I think a very defensive strategy early on will be necessary.

Edit: I've finished it this Saturday morn. The key is economy - you need to understand optimum resource gathering and villager seconds to be able to gather all those resources in time. Basically you need to get the resources needed for each task ahead as they are required. If you gather food to get to the tool age, why keep gathering once you have hit the upgrade button? You only need gold and a market from then on. Don't be afraid to put masses of villagers on a gold mine, and be sure to research those gathering rate upgrades once you are in tool.

Military isn't very important in this mission - you actually have a powerful enough military to defend indefinitely. You can also find some nice discoveries if you explore, like in almost an AR mission. Don't waste any time making clubmen, barracks etc until your economy is very strong, and then once you have done all the research you can, you can sweep those little clubbers off the map with ease.

The trick is making your archers and priest much more powerful by creating choke points and walling most entries right off. If you need a better idea of how to wall off your base early on take a look here.

After finishing the mission, I'm a little scared by what I read... We have incredible numbers of natural disasters - a tsunami (what are the odds of that?), 3 consecutive major hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico, and an earthquake in Pakistan - is this just our reward for creating Global Warming, or is this really the end of the earth as predicted by the Sumerians?

I wonder what would happen it was to happen, and people found out about it.

I'm trying to make my campaign as hard as I can, but it might be to easy for you guys. I'm putting down everything so it would be challageng to me, but I know you guys are much better than me, so it might be to easy. Also, I'll make 4 scenearios, but the story of Atlantis is much longer than that, so Andrea, add to my campaings title "Part One".

This as got to be my longest post

"A Short History Of Lost Sumeria" has been updated. As I said in the Hidden Units thread:

Quoted from myself:

I've found an annoying bug related to Hero_Traitor_01. As said it can't be killed, since it always respawns with 1 HP left doing a small jump forward. The fact is, during this jump it seems to leave kind on an invisible unit behind him. As a result, your units can no longer walk where the Traitor had been "killed"! Kill the Traitor enough times with arrows and it will create an invisible wall, destroying your scenario playability. "A Short History Of Lost Sumeria" has been updated since the 4th scenario featured the Traitor, now removed.

Updates go up immediately, so as you read this, the new version is ready and available.

Sorry, but those of you who have already downloaded my Sumerian campaign would better to download it again. Apologies for the inconvenient.

EDIT

Well, well, I'm quite headless, to say the least. Second update. When I got rid of Hero_Traitor_01 I forgot to adjust one of the VCs. Forgive me. Now make sure to have the correct version. Check the version number of the ZIP archive: it must be 1.2

Thanks for the Update Andrea So far I like it.

Im working on Duty of a Soldier- since work is slow now I have a bit of time to work on it more. But I want a large battle to be in one of the scenarios (or even the first one) any suggestions how to do it? Im meaning more of a set-piece affair. I did find uses for the dead units too. Came in handy for a scene.

Increasing a units HP is the only way to make an FF battle longer, while trigger based systems make it more interesting, both hard to do with AoE. You'll probably need to look for units that have quite high HP/Armour and low attack like Ele archers. If the units are all in close proximity to each other the battle will be over quickly, so it's probably better to use terrain or buildings to force the player to stay in place and let the enemy come to him, or to have the enemy in the same situation. That's not really a set piece though - it's more like Phill's level in Conan of Cimmeria where you use the towers/cliffs as a safe haven and then raid when you get the chance.

For a set piece the closest I can think is to use Gaia units and a large battle field, and low damage units like Ele archers. Priests also work well because they can heal and convert, no damage at all. Once a certain army is defeated you move around and find another group of soldiers, that sort of thing. Using terrain and strategy would have to be an important part of such a scenario though, otherwise it could be quite bland, and the result a little too random.

Richard, thanks. Im aware of trigger based scenarios (AOK) that do the large battles well. I might have goofed when I said "set-piece battle" sorry. But I think I got the idea now. I'm gonna look around the Granary to see what I can find too.

I mentioned this in EEH: http://ee.heavengames.com/cgi-bin/forums/display.cgi?action=st&fn=1&tn=37277&st=48#post49

Even with triggers, you can still fail to make a good set piece battle especially a lagre one becuase the AI is so easy to be tricked. It eitehr tends to not fire back when attacked, all chase after one unit or fight as an unorganised horde. Even with triggers creating an orgainsed CP is hard.

I just reloaded my AoE after months of not playing it. To my astonishment, I found the scenario I was creating 'Escape To The Mountains' was still there and all of the writing in the scenario had been done! So since I have a week from school, I might try and complete this scenario for your brutal analysis. That's if I don't get frustrated and stop playing the game

So if I do get this Scenario done, I may continue with the Campaign I was doing.

It's about time I got a piece of AoE work done... I've been a member here so damn long.

I try really hard to upload something for Christmas, I hope. It should be the famous "Project X" I talked before. I don't want to reveal the real name of this cpn. A surprise is a surprise after all!.

For "Mark Anthony..." I think it should be upload during the first months of 2006.

Many planning about AoE Legacy: a MP pack, and of course, the SP cpn, revisited, dedicate to the addicted ones. (one of the extra scn allows to players to convert Government centers and protect those ones. You also guess that you fail if Priests are kill)

I need some help. I finally made a Default Map of some quality (seriously, my old ones sucked. This one rocks!) but it just comes up as a bunch of fuzzy lines on the game. What have I done wrong?

It sounds like you either made the image larger than it was originally, or changed the format to something like .jpg. Check that the image dimensions are the same as map default for a start. If all else fails, just paste it into map default.

You know, that could be it. Thanks

Another question; I was flicking through Anrea Rosas website and came across this picture.

How do you make those little circle pond like things? I could really use them in my scenario.

From one Gaius, to another... (man is that funny..except mine is from Gaius Seutonius Paulinus -defeater of Boudicca)

The circular ponds? I know it has to do with shallows and then using tree stumps to encircle them. You can place the shallows anywhere by using MOVE and PLACE on the GAIA units. The tree stump part is where things get tricky. By the way, I like your bitmap!
