Welcome to the AoEH Designers' Board, a thread aimed to gather the last active designers and keep them in contact. The Board shows in alphabetical order people who are currently working on AoE/RoR scenarios and campaigns. To join the Board simply post here and give some little details about your work, such as the game (AoE or RoR), the setting (Historical, Fiction or Fantasy) and the subject (what is your campaign about?). This is also a good place to ask help to other designers, seek for playtesters, post your screenshots, and unleash your design frustrations.

Updates on your progresses are optional, but highly welcome, so if you are working on a multi-level campaign you may post here as you finish a particular scenario, and your status will be updated. Once your game is published, it will be listed among the 'Released Projects'.

Quoted from The Dark Archer:

Just a quick question. I have alot of empty space in the scenario I'm working on what should I put in these spaces?

Maybe you could do a peaceful little town just as eyecandy?
Or make a special place with some resources, a secret little pond, whatever comes to your mind.

Quoted from The Dark Archer:

I have spent a lot of time making a small town in the cliffs where you start in this scenario and I could post some screen if you want to see.

Yeah, post some screenies.

Quoted from The Dark Archer:

BTW this campaign is going to be like LOTR with the creatures that in habbit it but is definitely not a LOTR campaign.

I don't really get what this sentence means at all. Could you explain?

I think it is fixed.

BTW, here's just a bit razzle-dazzle for my campaign. You start out the screen totally black, but in fact there's the tower timer trick. Not far away from the gaia tower, there is a gaia short swordsman, a player 2 BLP right by the swordsman, and a player 3 catapult. The cat kills the BLP, lowers the swordsman's hp to 1(damn). While the cat is being killed by an alligator, the swordsman will be discovered by the tower(The tower will not hit the swordsman, because the tower will discover a player 1 BLP first, along finding the swordsman). The hard thing in this scenario is that you must keep your swordsman alive.

Not far away, from one of the paths my swordsman must travel, there's a player 2 clubman, a player 4 BLP(Players 2 and 4 are allied), and a player 5 Catapult Trireme stuck on a cliff(which is allied to 2 but not 4). The CT will attack the player 4 BLP, in the process hurting the clubman to only 4 hp.

When my swordsman comes to the path, he will be confronted with the 4hp clubman, now, it's really either kill or be killed.

Wow, it took me 15 minutes to write down what will happen in my scenario in the first 30 seconds(lol)

P.S. Does anyone here play Runescape?

That sounds really impressive, Fudgy. You managed to get a unit down to one HP? Perhaps you could use archimedes in RoR since in RoR he can do 1 damage sometimes. That should be enough to kill the swordsman! It's pretty hard to get a unit with HP that low, which units did you use again? Catapult and short sword?

*tries out*

Have you guys noticed how different trees (the ones from the brush map) behave differently? For example, not all of them go on cliffs, and if you want to make a forest, some of them seem to be real "picky": They won't go anywhere, while others will go in places even when they shine red. Does anyone know what this is caused by?

I just fully understood that yesterday, making a 48 by 48 tile uber forest. I trick I've taken to is to make two trees using the terrain, and a third using Gaia list. I move them all into the area after first spraying it with rocks, terrain cracks, grass patches etc, moving in Gaia first, then the two terrain trees. You get an impressive looking 3 tree forest, with some overlapping trees.

I believe some terrain generated trees are just Gaia trees (since they can't go on cliffs), but are sometimes not on the Gaia list.

I was looking at a utility called the DRS list. It tells you all the beta units effectively, and it includes some neat units like a goat. Who knows if they have full movement animations, though. I'd like to see someone make a modpack that used all the blue units on the list so we could get a good idea not just what all the beta units are, but what they look like. I've seen a lot of the alternative buildings and units in Rasher's Magnus modpack, but I'm not sure if they are all there (probably not).

I'll have to read up more about the DRS files, it's really interesting to fully understand the mechanics of how the maps are made etc, like the border DRS files determine the border between say desert and grass. You all know what that looks like, but you probably don't think about the mechanics behind it. Another unit, the wall, has 3 variations: The NE SW, the SE NW, and the end wall (while is also used for up and down/east west walls). A small wall actually has a single pole flag embedded in it if you look closely, and the greek fortifications make a nice effect when used as a solid terrain (sorta like a graveyard I think. And of course there is a beta wall as well!

I don't know why it happens, but it's the standard behaviour of Gaia Trees. Moreover, not all Forest Trees stay visible when you draw cliffs under them: the shortest brown ones, for example, disappear. Pine Forest and Palm Forest, instead, never lose a signle tree in the process. The same goes for Gaia units. These are some examples which come to my mind:

DELETED BY CLIFF PASSAGE

Birds, All Gaia Trees, Bones, Rocks, Cacti, Dead Trees

NOT DELETED

Walking Animals, Player Units, Gold & Stone mines, Berry Bushes, Forest Trees (with some exceptions), Shallow Tiles

Also note that you can overlap units from the second group over the units of the first group (for example you can drag a Berry Bush over a Gaia Tree), but not vice-versa nor with units of the same group.

Better sharing it with your upcoming campaign

Besides, an edited .dll can't be considered as modding, and people show a bit of interest for it only if it's shipped with a dedicated campaign.

Designer's log, stardate 53475.6

Some considerations from the remaking of "The Senate And People Of Rome"

Scenario 6, "Caesar In Gaul", really doesn't fit with the rest of the campaign. First of all is far too easy, then it turned out to be unhistorical. In the scenario your task is to capture Vercingetorix by bringing two Legions to the Gallic Government Center, while even my dog knows that Caesar sieged Alesia by building a double fortification around the city. I really don't know what was I thinking when I designed that scenario, however I don't like its layout anymore, thus I'll rebuild it from scratch, following the concept of the "Alesia" scenario from the Expansion Pack.

Here some comparative screenshots from scenarios 1 and 2. They have maintained their layouts, but the maps have some more detail. Mission objectives are slightly different (forget that awful "stockpile 3000 food"), and the historical section has been entirely rewritten as well. The instruction themselves will not change however, since I don't dislike their "Ensemblish" style for this campaign. Finally there are new .ai and .per, so that the enemies behave differently.

Scenario 1 old - new
Scenario 2 old - new

Ok, for the moment all is fine, except that I didn't expect to have a whole scenario to remake. When all the eight missions will be tuned I'll consider about making new bitmaps.

Cheers

I'm still playing your first two campaigns. I've read a bit about the siege of Alesia, it would be a fun campaign to make. I'm still learning about Caesar, but I've been reading more about India lately. I'm not sure if I want to do a Caesar campaign anymore, at least not right now, but I'll keep learning about him.

Today I played your 3rd (or 4th) mission in Senate, and I conquered most of the map fairly easily. Hannibal never attacked me strangely. When I finally found him down the bottom I pecked away at him with priests, but then he got mad and came at me. I frantically researched some upgrades, made priests and helepolis, but one of his elephants got through anyway! His army, and all my enemies were virtually dead when that happened.

In Underhand dealings, I thought you had to build walls around the windowless crypt in Under a crimson star, but it turned out it was that Mursuli had to be next to one of the artifacts, which wasn't so clear. (Also "wall it up" was the reason for my wall confusion, and I didn't know which type of "wall". I home runned it and found out what was the reason using the extractor anyway.

I really love that map, I've been making a big map (Large map, 205 k w/o bitmap or instructions) using the trade workshop template. I realize that small clumps of trees and eye candy is a bit better than spammed trees and eye candy. It looks a bit more natural don't you think? I like the way south of where you start it's just nice grass/desert mix with clumped trees, a few decorations, and lots of elevations.

Here's a little pic of the alternate Egypt TC. Save it to a folder and you can paste it right into bitmaps.

About the screenshot (Dark Archer)

Placing units on cliffs: You can place not only most forest trees, but dead trees, berry bushes, and stone and gold mines, plus water and in AoE you can place rocks on top (afterwards).

The waterfalls look okay, remember you can place trees under the waterfall area too. You can add more desert patchs and grass patches if you want.

Basic map design: Don't use desert and grass separately. I'm a slow learner, and only my last 3 scenarios really use this. Use desert and grass together, adjusting the balance as you need to. Place a lot of desert and grass patches, especially desert patches at the border, and grass on the grass.

Making rivers. It's quite simple (have you got a copy of Andreas article on your computer?)

Make a river bed like this:

1)Make the river, using shallows

2)Make grass near the river, and blend in some desert further away.

3)Move the shallow tiles using Gaia>Move. You want to place them especially on the south side, since they are easier to cover up. Leave some shore, and cover some over with shallows tiles.

4) Place a lot of desert patches on the south shore on the border with the water, and anywhere else if you want, including in the water. I prefer not to place them in water, but to place some in water and pull the shallows away from them, so they aren't partially covered. Then I place cacti over them, especially #1,2,4.

5) Place a lot of cacti all over the area, in the water (maybe move the shallows so they are visable), and at the shore, especially infront of moved shallows.

6) Place a lot of berries, dead trees, patches etc etc, and when you are happy, add the second last touch: Rocks. Rocks are one of the staple eye candy requirements, and there are a lot of them.

7) Trees. Andrea is still a lot better with trees than me. Move the trees in so they don't delete rocks and desert patches under them, and maybe move some terrain (forest, jungle etc) trees with the full tile base under Gaia trees to get a nice effect. Choose a varitey of trees that you like. You can't go wrong.

This all takes many hours in the editor to learn. Everyone here is at a different stage, and has different potentials, but with map design, almost anyone can be a pro by copying the skill and techniques emplyed by the best. Then when you are comfortable you can add your own style to it.

For more on rivers, reread Andreas article often, and refer to his maps, a good river map is "High Hopes", scenario #1 of Memories of the Gupta Dynasty.

Mix in terrain cracks over desert ground often, it helps fill in blank spaces. Do that by placing grass first, since you can't place grass under terrain cracks. Then spam terrain cracks, and paste some desert underneath.

Good luck, and post us the screenshot again to prove how easy it is!

Rich, did you make that town center? It looks nice.

Andrea I have more posts than you!

LittleFreak: These are from Bill's Modpack. They are beta units as well. Two others (less BMP friendly)

Quoted from Richard Ames:

Today I played your 3rd (or 4th) mission in Senate, and I conquered most of the map fairly easily. Hannibal never attacked me strangely. When I finally found him down the bottom I pecked away at him with priests, but then he got mad and came at me.

It has been fixed. Hannibal's troops now attack soon, and you haven't the time to go in search for them. "Hannibal At Portas" was my first attempt at making a real world map, the Mediterranean basin. Do you like it?

In Underhand dealings, I thought you had to build walls around the windowless crypt in Under a crimson star, but it turned out it was that Mursuli had to be next to one of the artifacts, which wasn't so clear. (Also "wall it up" was the reason for my wall confusion, and I didn't know which type of "wall". I home runned it and found out what was the reason using the extractor anyway.

Hmmm... building a wall section is an option, not a VC. When I designed that scenario I thought that the red CPU player could recapture it and move it away from the crypt - which actually never happens. Thus in the objectives I put the sentence "wall it up if you want", although actually it can be confusing (it's better explained in the walkthrough, though).

Concerning the Artifact problem, you must use King Mursuli to capture the three Babylonian tresaures. If you accidentally use other units you should still be able to win, simply make Mursuli touch the three war chests before bringing them back to your Government Center. Anyway I'll replay "Under A Crimson Star" so to be sure of it. Thanks for the report

I like the TC that Richard posted as well. Hi, all. I've returned after a long absence. Anyway.. Duty of a Soldier is still in the works. I had a lot of computer problems earlier in the year, so almost all my work on Duty was lost.

But its nice to see everyone here.

Richard I'll take your on mixing desert and grass but unfortunately I can't make my river that much better than it is because it is to close to the side of the map to put many desert/grass patchs.

Yeah, I've had similiar problems with making "fake grass" some time ago. Can't you put the river a bit further in? If not, then leave it like it is, as there's no solution for this problem I think.

The Babylonian Beta-TC was basically the same, but had four small roads section. It was very nice, a shame ES changed it to a cheaper one. I also prefer the old Egyptian TC.

The old Greek TC instead looked like a gazebo, I think the final version is better.

Andrea, if a template was made with all these beta units in it, would you cry tears of happiness? I'd hate to think how much cooler your uber towns would look.

Dark Archer and LF: It don't matter. You can't use grass patches, terrain cracks and desert patches, but there are still all the trees, rocks and other little things.

Go to the downloads section have have a really good look at all the features. We can submit files straight from that area, although we used to have to send them to an HG Angel via email.
