I took my small knowledge of AoK:CE editing to the RoR demo, and have been able to do tech edits. Like changing tech costs, research times, and even replacing what they do. Like I made the Long Swordsman avail in Bronze Age by replacing the Bronze Swordsman effect with the Long Swordsman effect. I can't do too much, but that could be because it's the demo. Could someone give me the empires.dat file from a full-version of RoR? Thanx.

We are not allowed to send files from the full game to people who do not own it. However, if your work does not involve hacking the exe or similar, you can post the method here for those with the full game to try.

OK. Pity about that. My edits don't change the .EXE, so here goes:

Download this: http://www.digitization.org/download/zlibnoh.rar

Extract it's contents to your RoR data2 folder.
Start MS-DOS prompt

C:\Windows>cd "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games"
# Note: I'm guessing the folder, change it if I'm wrong
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games>cd "Age of Empires"
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires>cd data2
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires\data2>uncompr empires2.dat empires2.hex

Open empires2.hex in a hex editor(like Hexplorer) and search for CHUN. Please tell me if anything comes up.

Digit said I would need to learn how to use the "zlibnoh" thing to find the unit constant numbers. You seem to know what you're doing, so I'd love to see you do some work on it, any modding etc would be great too. The full game is very cheap these days, is it really so hard to get it? HG has very strict policies that apply to all games, even the ones that are nearly a decade old and the developers have virtually abandoned, so topics like this can be a bit dangerous when people start talking about cracks etc. It would be great if we can talk on MSN about it, or at least over email, that way we don't have to worry about the Code of Conduct etc. My email is in the signature.

I don't have a problem with the type of editing mentioned so far. It may be a very useful modding tool. Look at all the discussions we've had over the years about balance etc. Being able to change build times, speeds etc would not only address that but open up a whole new world of design.

Uh, you should be careful with that. Doing too much would probably ruin the whole game.

Also, many old campaigns would not be playable with edited version (it would hurt the balance).

I support the idea of editing the files you mentioned if it's for a campaign or scenario of your own and if there's a backup file included.

Otherwise I probably won't download it, sorry. =l

Do we still have the list of balancing fixes wedsaz drew up from a while ago. I remember there was some petition to have ES incorporate it into a new patch.

If so we could look through that and see what we could do without harming the game. (Like for one, reducing Hittite's double siege HP.)

Well, we were mainly discussing what positive and negative influences such edits could have.

It could be positive if it would balance the game a little more and for creative designers it would be awesome.

But old campaigns would most likely not be playable, because the author, for example, might not have intended the player to be able to use long swordsmen in the bronze age.

LittleFreak: Then just keep a backup of your old files. I mean if you need to play a campaign with the old tech settings, just use the old backed up files.

This is already happened with the 1.0a RoR Patch which made controlling horses impossible. In the Martial Emperor, part of the campaign required horse herding. I just replace my current RoR with the non-patched versions and play it as it meant to be played.

After all, that's what people do with the language.dll files.

Really? Didn't know that. So it was possible to control wild horses. lol. However I'm sure Richard Parker designed that scenario for the "running away"-style horses. Besides the "Martial Emperor" is an AoE campaign, not a RoR one. And it also happen to be my favourite ever, by the way

Yeah, you can control horses in AoE but not in RoR so you have to play it AoE without the 1.0c patch because I think that messes up some other aspect of the campaign.

By "control" I think Centy means "herd", like with gazelles. Did know that lions will not attack horses, but villagers will hunt horse like gazelles? Horses can be herded in RoR as well, they just don't have a movement graphic. Villagers still hunt them as well. Martial Emperor was designed for AoE, so you shouldn't really play it in RoR. I actually had the horse "who sweats blood" hunted by villagers in that scenario. Funny thing is they disappear without even a death graphic (unless you catapult them) so the silly CPU villy doesn't even know what to do

Aren't beta units great? That's why I'd love to see someone work out the SCN files code and put up some new templates.

Okay. Lets get back on topic here, I'm having trouble editing the .hex file. I've uncompressed the .dat file into a .hex file but there is no CHUN anywhere in the file (I used the search in my editor) so now I'm stuck.

OK, throw out CHUN4. It's different. I think that I've found AO1 is the correct one, it seems like that's the right one(if what I'm looking at in the hex file is correct). But I've got a lot of work to try decipher it.

EDIT: If you ever get to find what does the '.scn' filesī code means, it would be very useful too.

Hehe, yes after the edits. Currently I'm only working on tech edits. I want to master them first. Just out of curiosity, why gazelles for goats?

I'm currently hung up because the tech I'm working off is wheel and it's value change is a percentage. I don't know the original, if you could tell me the speed value of a unit - I couldn't thank YOU enough.

Oh yes - Oh yes. I'm getting on well. Now I've mastered changing what happens and how much happens. Latest makes archers cheat units so to speak - they've got excellent vision and 3085 range. I wish I could make the LOS better - but AoE has a fixed limit. Like in the 3rd Punic War, Battle of Tunes - I can use these men to hit the Colosseum without being touched. From my city, they can shoot anything they see.

I couldn't have been able to come this far without indirect help from others on the AoK forums. Now I'm busy with more precise edits. That huge range was not intended to be that big actually. Some things work precisely and others don't.

I'm getting on. My current thing I've done is gained precise control of HP and a few other things. I've made the Triereme and unique ships so that they have a negative cost! IE: creating a Fire Ship for the Carthaginians gives me 4500 wood and gold. I know, I know - it's primitive making cheats. But I wanted the fun for once of not bothering with being conservative about GOLD! I don't get cheats in the demo.

Current problem: I need a indexed list of units, I only have one for AoK. And I need a indexed list of effects, once again - only got one for AoK. I'm going to try figure out the RoR lists. Unless someone had made a indexed list.
