History

The review thread began back in October 2004 and ended around March 2006. It's purpose was to get people into reviewing other's submissions, as a way to help each other improve and give them recognition when they did well. We discovered some great scenarios and reviewed a large number of submissions such that, at least at the time of its closure, almost every recent submission, going back several years, had at least one review.

The thread will no longer be updated anymore as I have retired as an active reviewer, but the thread continues at its new location here. The remainder of the thread serves mainly as a historical reference, and some information will be out of date. I considered trimming it down to a mere redirect to the new thread, but I think it's better new people can come and see how things were in the past if they want to.

I've enjoyed my time with you guys and I'm sad to see the thread sink. Having said that, this is definitely not the end of reviewing - People always need support and encouragement, and for the measly amount of effort required to write a comment or review it is worth so much to both the designer and the downloaders. As long as people keep looking after each other there will be plenty of feedback and a strong community.

Overview

Reviews and feedback are a huge boost for a designer, and really support the community. If you play a campaign/scenario etc that hasn't been reviewed, pop in a review for it, it only takes a few minutes to write, when you have probably spent an hour playing it. Read the review guidelines if you haven't done so already, you can find them here

This thread isn't just about reviews, it's purpose is to talk about campaigns you have played, new scenarios etc, anything like that.

We aim to review everything submitted, so all designers get feedback on their work and know where they're at with their designing, and all downloaders have a rough guage of the quality of submissions, and a descriptive review to read when browsing files to download.

AoEH Unofficial Review Team aka The Super Heroes Club

It's like a very simple role playing game where you do reviews to level up.

-You must have submitted a review to join
-Under no circumstances can you take this seriously
-You tell me this:

*Your faek (fake) Super Hero name
*Your quote or description
*Your unit (any unit/building from AoE/RoR, or even AoK, or an RPG game etc if you like, as long as you can have some form of stats and levelling up
*Your special attack (optional)
*You can have a custom picture too if you like, or a custom attack bonus

The Points System

Each time you submit a review you may get points. You may also be awarded points at random times for this and that. The points go towards upgrading your chosen unit (getting armour etc, and eventually levelling up).

Upgrades: Simple Upgrades (mainly weapon/armour etc) - 50 to 200 pts
Uber Upgrades - upgrading your unit e.g. Cav to Heavy Cav - 500 pts

Campaign of the Month

Message of Freedom, an AoE Scenario by TypX

4.4

Message of Freedom begins with only a villager amidst a town under attack - you'll probably want to get out of there before a sword finds it's way into your chest. The gameplay shifts to a FF and puzzle style, with some restricted B&D later on. Once you get a message to the secret base in the north it is up to you to avenge the Mastites and destroy the Nabri. Strongly recommended by Nanaki and myself.

Runner Up

Drusus and Tiberius, an AoE campaign by Richard Ames

4.3

Third Place

Tales of Udrania , a RoR campaign by c4master

4.1

October

Campaign of the Month

The Senate and People of Rome, an AoE campaign by Andréa Rosa

5.0

Senate and People of Rome is the greatest of all remakes, bringing together everything that is great about AoE into one campaign, a compendium of the important events in the early years of Rome, and an inspiration to anyone looking to remake their own level. With this campaign's two new 5 star reviews it bring's Andrea's tally up to 5 top rating campaigns, a monumental achievement for this great designer.

Runner Up

The Sons of the Lion King, an RoR Campaign by Hijja

4.9

Third Place

Death of the Morads (Remix), an AoE Scenario by chrisjen_81 (aka The Dark Archer)

4.7

November

Campaign of the Month

A Short History Of Lost Sumeria, an AoE campaign by Andréa Rosa

5.0

As we approach the end of the year the best has been saved until last. Andrea's newest offering takes on a new mythological style, while still keeping to his historically researched presentation and classical gameplay. You will see all sorts of new tricks and eye candies in this campaign, and learn a lot about Sumeria and the ancient world. Congratulations Andrea, you're the first to receieve campaign of the month twice in a row!

Runner Up

The Artillerist, an RoR Scenario by Sick Sid

4.7

This month had 29 reviews from 30 days, yet there were only 2 campaigns worthy of a placing. Luckily they are both very good. The Artillerist is a great FF scenario for RoR where you play as a young siege engineer who is entrusted with the sacking of Babylon. Your mission is in two parts, and you must provide the siege component of for your allied army, and conquer Assyria's enemies in its last days of greatness.

December

Campaigns of the Month

Annex of the Two Rivers, a RoR campaign by FireLegion_56

4.6

Tales of Udrania Part 2, a RoR campaign by c4master

4.6

Campaign of the month for December was as close a competition as ever. Tropper and C4master both released new campaigns around this time, which were awarded the first ever 'first equal', as I was unable to split them. On top of that Rug_Might unearthed a neat scenario by Kyle Leach, which had so far gone without a review. This was a very strong month for designing with the expansion as well, as all these campaigns are for Rise of Rome.

Annex of the Two Rivers is an interesting scenario based on the Parthian wars, with a double AVI and the first ever use of the new beta units alongside the overlapping units feature, and the results are outstanding.

Tales of Udrania Part 2 is the second part the the fantasy story 'Tales of Udrania'. Vandir now lives with the Haya Dona. One day they find a strange map which holds the opportunity to free Kunab, the old wise man of their village. Play the campaign to learn more of the fantasy tale.

Runner Up

Reluctant Guest, an RoR campaign by Kyle Leach

4.5

You stand on a foreign beach with 400 gold pieces, a body guard, and a scout. You have come to rescue your leader from a hostile king who holds him hostage. The fortified city on the hill is daunting, the pathways are guarded, and the local fishermen are forming a welcoming party with sharp, pointy sticks. If you do not think quickly and chose wisely, you will die here.

January

Campaign of the Month

The Solar Cult, a Rise of Rome campaign by Daniel The Master (aka Borruma_) - Reviewer: Richard

4.6

For those of you thirsty for a great mission to play, here's one for just you. This scenario of Daniel's was a great find, if you're feeling like a bit of RoR, this is the one to play. A new cult of fantacism has swept the lands, and your king looks to you to stop it. Tackle superior forces with leadership and skill, and prove that numbers alone cannot always win. The first great find for the new year, let's hope 2006 holds more great discoveries like The Solar Cult!

February

Campaign of the Month

A Battle to the End, a RoR Scenario by Lennart van Beek (aka PhatFish) - Reviewers: Richard, IICDO

4.3

If you're looking for a good level to sink your teeth into, here's a recently unearthed classic by Lennart, who is currently unearthing some amazing new stuff himself, which you can read about on the forums. Have a play of his first submitted scenario, and defeat the Mira in Ancient Japan, in a beautiful and creative scenario mixing role playing puzzles and B&D action.

March

Campaign of the Month

Richard & N00bs, a RoR Scenario by scenario_t_c - Reviewers: Rug_Might, Chris Mattox, Richard Ames

Thanks Upnotep. Put a point up for Team NZ because I just reviewed the Fort Mod.
BTW do second opinions count if the first opinion was made before the contest started.

Alrighty, firstly I'll add Blunder Boy's review, and I'll add him and Upnotep to my team. Now as for Team 2, I'll add Bismarck once he confirms.

I've also done a review myself, a second review for The Longbowmen. I gave it a similar score to Little Freak, but slightly lower since I noticed some problems later in the campaign.

I don't see a problem calling it team NZ, since half the people around here are from NZ. All the non kiwis can join Freak's team.

There are a few issues

-What if the review is rushed?

Try to write a review as you normally would. Don't just write short reviews to get extra points

-What if it is a second opinion?

I don't think there's any problem with second opinions. If you do think they should be worth less, let us know, and explain why.

-What if the reviewer hasn't finished the campaign?

Do try to finish all the campaign before you review it. The Longbowmen for example had some bugs in the later levels, something LF didn't pick up. You really need to play the whole thing before reviewing

-Mods, utilities, campaigns, scenarios, newb submissions?

Obviously a campaign takes a lot longer to play than to inspect a mod pack. Still, I think we'll just leave it all as 1 point each. If you want to review stuff because it takes less time, fine. Everyone can do the same. I'll probably stick to campaigns and scenarios as I usually do.

This is just a fun contest anyway, so let's have fair play and no cheating

First of all, yes, it's true someone should play the whole campaign before reviewing, I noticed that myself. I'm sorry, but I'll do so before reviewing in the future. Anyways, no reviewer is perfect. :P

It'd be cool if someone out there could join me, so we have equal numbers. I don't know a proper team name yet, but I will probably choose one as soon as we get a third member. Otherwise, we'll probably be Team Germany. ^_^

Quoted from Lorenzo:

I like that idea, and I'd be happy to join.

Hey Rich can Freddie be our mascot for this contest?

Quoted from Rich:

-What if it is a second opinion?

I don't think there's any problem with second opinions. If you do think they should be worth less, let us know, and explain why.

If the first opinion was done before the contest then no. But if it was done during the contest then yes because then everyone would start reviewing the same thing over and over again while getting points.
Anyway good luck to the contestants and start reviewing.

All new members will join Freaks team, (at least until he has 4). I think we should be able to get equal numbers, Bismarck should join you after him and BB finish play testing. You should look to recruit someone else yourself. Email is always a good idea. See if BB or someone wants to join, maybe FireLegion (I know that would mess up the Germany Theme, but 4v2 would be unfair), or anyone else. Ideally you could persuade Ingo for a full German team, but that would be pretty difficult. Maybe Mero could join? He said he was interested some time ago, I think.

Concerning Dr Lorenzo's post...

Quote:

I think we can maybe sort out an official reviewing team - like AoKH.

What for? It's "Officiality" that I'm making fun of here. Is it really going to be any more "Official" if we give everyone little "Official Reviewer" statuses to stick in their signature? I think I'll stick with "AoEH Unofficial Review Team"

Concerning review contest deadline, anything submitted on the 18th will be fine, regardless of the time. If it has reached the next day however, it won't count.

I think we may add a bit more to the (non existant) contest area, something to have fun with while we wait for the results.

Now let's get that Latest Reviews section brimming with shiny new reviews!

There's plenty of flags around the web, no need to make any for me. I'm still working on getting the display right... I found some animated flags but they don't look very good do they? I think I'll stick to smaller ones.

How can I get the "Reviews before contest" line to move to the right? It seems to ignore all the spaces, so is there something else I should do, maybe make a table (and learn how) or something?

About Official Reviewing team stuff, well, I like the idea of having an "official reviewer" title in my signature.

I have somthing random to ask. What is everyones high scores in Minesweeper?
IMO I would rather be not be an Official Reviewer because then it takes all the fun out of The Super Heroes Club which is the only real reson I review. And anyway I'm no good at playing campaigns and scenarios.

Mine Sweeper.

I love that game. :P

I usually play it in school during boring IT lessons, but I don't know my highscore from there.

At home:

N00b: 44 seconds
Moderate: 173 seconds
Hard: I was too lazy to play through Hard. =O

Anyways, yes, people, I suck at MineSweeper. ;D

I suck at playing AOE campaigns aswell, but not as much as I suck at RM or DM. :P

Say dude, how did you get that 3 seconds score? That's impossible to me.

Little Freak: I suggest you make your own thread if you want an "Official" one, I'm not having a bar of it

Besides, I can call this thread the "Official" thread if I wanted to, it's as simple as changing the text and asking a mod to alter the name, but what's the point? Call yourself an official reviewer if you like, but it means nothing to me.

Ok g2g2bed no time2type n e more

Card games? I used to play solitaire a loooooong time ago. I'm into Schafkopfen (a traditional Bavarian card game which no foreigner seems to understand) these days. Say, LittleFreak, can you play Schafkopf?

No. ^__^;

I usually play a card game with Schafkopf-cards in the school pause, but I can't mention it here because the name would get censored anyway. ;D

Anyways, I tried to interest Germanicus in the reviewing contest, that'd be another German member.

Hm, I think I know what you mean, LittleFreak , we play it as well in school breaks...
What about Watten?

And yea, Germanicus would be nice to have on the team. Also, we can just make Mero german, can't we. I'm sure he'd be granted Asylum... ^ ^

I'll write Germanicus an email soon.

I could join, but I don't know the rules, and also don't understand why it's the "April Reviewing Contest" if half of it is done during March ^-^. And in that case, my scenarios will have to wait. But it sounds good

EDIT: I read the rules. Ok, I want to join. And, since these will be my first reviews, am I going to be joined to the Unnoficial Review Team? I´ve always wanted to be the chariot.

YAY!

That are good news.

Writing reviews is not all that difficult, but if you need help you can always contact me.

You can join the unofficial review team aswell of course.

There's one thing yet to decide though, the team name.

Any ideas?

Not bad, actually. ^___^

I might alter it a bit so everyone in the team likes it though.

EDIT:

OMG, I finally found out how to make that darned cool smiley.

Edit: Upnotep can you please re-review Ormofpolis for campaign of the month? Giorgos is getting a little cranky about it too

Mero: I can't seem to display your flags site right. It just has that sample picture, nothing else? Works for Bismarck though right?

Okay, so can I confirm that Bismarck and Mero are on team 2?

Mero: You're welcome to join in the contest, but I'll need a review from you before you can join the Super Heroes. Me or Little Freak will give you feedback on your review so you can see if you've got the jist of it. You'll be a chariot to start, and able to get Scythe Chariot upgrade

Some of the mistakes new reviewers make are:

- Assuming that a scenario is impossible when they just don't understand it. Make sure you use reveal map/no fog to make sure it can't be done, and use the campaign extractor to open the individual scenarios in the editor if you are trying to figure out why you aren't winning when you should. Sometimes it will be your misunderstanding, other times the author has made an error in the editor (like messing the victory conditions up)

-Play a campaign to the end before you review it. A lot of people don't do this, and it gives misleading feedback

-Don't be too harsh on people with poor english/spelling. It's often not their fault. If they are just being a dumb "this r0xorz" n00b however...

Richard: What happened with my page? I don't really understand your problem.

LittleFreak: I like the name Freaksters, so if you want to name it like that, it's ok.

And for everyone, a friend has joined AoEH Forums: "maYEAH!". I don't know when he will post though, since his PC is down.

I'm confused. I should start reviewing as soon as possible, but I also have to betatest Uppy's scenarios. Additionally I also have a life, I can't spend all my time in front of the computer. =o

I'll probably have to do both simultaneous.
