History

The review thread began back in October 2004 and ended around March 2006. It's purpose was to get people into reviewing other's submissions, as a way to help each other improve and give them recognition when they did well. We discovered some great scenarios and reviewed a large number of submissions such that, at least at the time of its closure, almost every recent submission, going back several years, had at least one review.

The thread will no longer be updated anymore as I have retired as an active reviewer, but the thread continues at its new location here. The remainder of the thread serves mainly as a historical reference, and some information will be out of date. I considered trimming it down to a mere redirect to the new thread, but I think it's better new people can come and see how things were in the past if they want to.

I've enjoyed my time with you guys and I'm sad to see the thread sink. Having said that, this is definitely not the end of reviewing - People always need support and encouragement, and for the measly amount of effort required to write a comment or review it is worth so much to both the designer and the downloaders. As long as people keep looking after each other there will be plenty of feedback and a strong community.

Overview

Reviews and feedback are a huge boost for a designer, and really support the community. If you play a campaign/scenario etc that hasn't been reviewed, pop in a review for it, it only takes a few minutes to write, when you have probably spent an hour playing it. Read the review guidelines if you haven't done so already, you can find them here

This thread isn't just about reviews, it's purpose is to talk about campaigns you have played, new scenarios etc, anything like that.

We aim to review everything submitted, so all designers get feedback on their work and know where they're at with their designing, and all downloaders have a rough guage of the quality of submissions, and a descriptive review to read when browsing files to download.

AoEH Unofficial Review Team aka The Super Heroes Club

It's like a very simple role playing game where you do reviews to level up.

-You must have submitted a review to join
-Under no circumstances can you take this seriously
-You tell me this:

*Your faek (fake) Super Hero name
*Your quote or description
*Your unit (any unit/building from AoE/RoR, or even AoK, or an RPG game etc if you like, as long as you can have some form of stats and levelling up
*Your special attack (optional)
*You can have a custom picture too if you like, or a custom attack bonus

The Points System

Each time you submit a review you may get points. You may also be awarded points at random times for this and that. The points go towards upgrading your chosen unit (getting armour etc, and eventually levelling up).

Upgrades: Simple Upgrades (mainly weapon/armour etc) - 50 to 200 pts
Uber Upgrades - upgrading your unit e.g. Cav to Heavy Cav - 500 pts

Message of Freedom, an AoE Scenario by TypX

4.4

Message of Freedom begins with only a villager amidst a town under attack - you'll probably want to get out of there before a sword finds it's way into your chest. The gameplay shifts to a FF and puzzle style, with some restricted B&D later on. Once you get a message to the secret base in the north it is up to you to avenge the Mastites and destroy the Nabri. Strongly recommended by Nanaki and myself.

The Senate and People of Rome, an AoE campaign by Andréa Rosa

5.0

Senate and People of Rome is the greatest of all remakes, bringing together everything that is great about AoE into one campaign, a compendium of the important events in the early years of Rome, and an inspiration to anyone looking to remake their own level. With this campaign's two new 5 star reviews it bring's Andrea's tally up to 5 top rating campaigns, a monumental achievement for this great designer.

Runner Up

The Sons of the Lion King, an RoR Campaign by Hijja

4.9

Third Place

Death of the Morads (Remix), an AoE Scenario by chrisjen_81 (aka The Dark Archer)

4.7

November

Campaign of the Month

A Short History Of Lost Sumeria, an AoE campaign by Andréa Rosa

5.0

As we approach the end of the year the best has been saved until last. Andrea's newest offering takes on a new mythological style, while still keeping to his historically researched presentation and classical gameplay. You will see all sorts of new tricks and eye candies in this campaign, and learn a lot about Sumeria and the ancient world. Congratulations Andrea, you're the first to receieve campaign of the month twice in a row!

Runner Up

The Artillerist, an RoR Scenario by Sick Sid

4.7

This month had 29 reviews from 30 days, yet there were only 2 campaigns worthy of a placing. Luckily they are both very good. The Artillerist is a great FF scenario for RoR where you play as a young siege engineer who is entrusted with the sacking of Babylon. Your mission is in two parts, and you must provide the siege component of for your allied army, and conquer Assyria's enemies in its last days of greatness.

December

Campaigns of the Month

Annex of the Two Rivers, a RoR campaign by FireLegion_56

4.6

Tales of Udrania Part 2, a RoR campaign by c4master

4.6

Campaign of the month for December was as close a competition as ever. Tropper and C4master both released new campaigns around this time, which were awarded the first ever 'first equal', as I was unable to split them. On top of that Rug_Might unearthed a neat scenario by Kyle Leach, which had so far gone without a review. This was a very strong month for designing with the expansion as well, as all these campaigns are for Rise of Rome.

Annex of the Two Rivers is an interesting scenario based on the Parthian wars, with a double AVI and the first ever use of the new beta units alongside the overlapping units feature, and the results are outstanding.

Tales of Udrania Part 2 is the second part the the fantasy story 'Tales of Udrania'. Vandir now lives with the Haya Dona. One day they find a strange map which holds the opportunity to free Kunab, the old wise man of their village. Play the campaign to learn more of the fantasy tale.

Runner Up

Reluctant Guest, an RoR campaign by Kyle Leach

4.5

You stand on a foreign beach with 400 gold pieces, a body guard, and a scout. You have come to rescue your leader from a hostile king who holds him hostage. The fortified city on the hill is daunting, the pathways are guarded, and the local fishermen are forming a welcoming party with sharp, pointy sticks. If you do not think quickly and chose wisely, you will die here.

January

Campaign of the Month

The Solar Cult, a Rise of Rome campaign by Daniel The Master (aka Borruma_) - Reviewer: Richard

4.6

For those of you thirsty for a great mission to play, here's one for just you. This scenario of Daniel's was a great find, if you're feeling like a bit of RoR, this is the one to play. A new cult of fantacism has swept the lands, and your king looks to you to stop it. Tackle superior forces with leadership and skill, and prove that numbers alone cannot always win. The first great find for the new year, let's hope 2006 holds more great discoveries like The Solar Cult!

February

Campaign of the Month

A Battle to the End, a RoR Scenario by Lennart van Beek (aka PhatFish) - Reviewers: Richard, IICDO

4.3

If you're looking for a good level to sink your teeth into, here's a recently unearthed classic by Lennart, who is currently unearthing some amazing new stuff himself, which you can read about on the forums. Have a play of his first submitted scenario, and defeat the Mira in Ancient Japan, in a beautiful and creative scenario mixing role playing puzzles and B&D action.

March

Campaign of the Month

Richard & N00bs, a RoR Scenario by scenario_t_c - Reviewers: Rug_Might, Chris Mattox, Richard Ames

Alright then. Well in that case I want to start friendly a FFA reviewing contest. We have one month to do as many reviews as we can. I think we should get a point for every scn we complete so if we complete and review a 10 scn cpn we get 10 points. The winner is then crowned the Uber reviewer of March 2006. Anyone want to join? I'll keep a update post if Rich isn't here.

Okay, we'll do that then.

I doubt I will win, as I've only been doing 3-4 reviews a month, though lately that has been the majority, unfortunately. It will be good to get some more reviews again.

Here's the rules - what do you think?

-Free For All - no teams
-Open to anyone who reviews, no need to enter
-One point per scenario - so single and multi player scenarios, and campaigns only count. Campaigns points equal the number of scenarios they contain.

Edit: We've got some results in already, see the top of the thread. Nanaki takes the lead with 4 reviews, a strong start. Now it's up to anyone who wants to challenge him to catch up. Now don't anyone go complaining about his quick start, all's fair in love and war, and there won't be any Cuban adjustment acts around here

*laughes*

Richard is a true politician. Anyway - I'll try to do one more. By the way the campaign held 6 scenarios, not only 4 as the designer said. But believe me - even 4 of them would have been enough to get such a low score

Ha! I made another review. It's a scenario called "the vanguard". Check it out because it's really good. Maybe someon could ask the designer to release his campaign which this scenario is part of. I'd be looking forward to play it.

Good stuff Nanaki! I'll give that scenario a play later this month. I fear you have already beaten me, but it's great to see the reviews. I'm still going to go for a respectable placing, though, maybe I can get second or third place.

By the way, I've recently been playing a great AoK scenario called MacBeth. It's a fine piece of work, all of you with AoK installed on your machines be sure to give it a play!

Remember people, go easy on the smileys too, they also can cause lag, especially on older machines.

Ah, yes... Perhaps you could have a look for any differences, especially at the victory conditons, or any other bugs in the earlier one. I think this must be an update, so the one you reviewed should be removed, and your review moved to the newer one, assuming it is still accurate.

Probably that's it!

@Richard: I checked out the other "Mary & Jason" scenario/campaign.

It's (only one scenario and it's) the same mission with the same goals but here all works fine. So maybe we can just delete the old one and I'll update score. What do you think I should do? Give 0.5 more points in creativity and instructions?

good idea, TDA

So here's a review for

[size=+2]Italy warfare[/size]

playability: 4.0
The campaign consists of one short scenario which is pretty cool. Unfortunately a low balance ruins parts of the fun. I played it on hard and I suggest maybe playing on hardest so that your enemies get some more ressources and thus build mor units and are more dangerous. Besides this flaw the scenario is done well with an interesting map and a reasonable goal to archieve. There are many players used which makes the scenario much better than an average submission with only two civilizations combatting somewhere.

balance: 2.0
The scenario is far too easy. Play it on hardest if you want to have at least a little challange. The funny thing is - I don't really know why it is so easy. Your opponents got all nice bases but they seem to have problems with their villagers who got stuck or simply didn't even exist. If all players would work correctly I suppose this scenario would be quite tough even with your allies.

creativity: 3.0
Solid work. Nothing more and nothing less. I liked the victory condition of destroying all wonders. This is indeed possible and it would be just right if the enemies wouldn't have such strange problems. I'm glad to see not another "destroy all" campaign and not another fixed force scenario. The scenario itself plays like one of the original campaigns with a nice build & destroy part.

map design: 3.0
Again a good job here. The map holds elevations, islands, continents and shallows. the forests are not the strongest part but the cities are ok. The designer didn't use any eye candy as far as I remember but by "imprisoning" your ally with trees and walls he puts in some nice tactical elements.

story/instructions: 3.0
Well, it's not much of a story and it is slightly historical but in a way - wrong. I believe, when Ceasar reigned, all of nowadays Italy has already been part of Rome.
There is no bitmap but the hints are ok so I'll give an average score again.

Beware: You have to disable allied victory! the author wrote that vc's are somehow corrupted but it's only due to allied victory. If you disable all works fine.

Average score: 3.0

c4master reviewed this one

STOP!

the one I reviewed is bugged. Delete the one which I reviewed and take on my review to the other submission.

Btw: The granary seems to work correctly again

I think the old bugged one was deleted, though the review may have been lost.

Good to see some reviews pouring in - Rug, IICDO, and of course Nanaki. I'm going to have to join you guys in a day or two!

Edit: Finally, I've done a review. Alas, I'm only 5th though - good to see so many people doing reviews this month.

Ricahrd, you should try and keep all your reviews to one profile...that way you can see all your reviews in one place.

Ah, I see... Yes, the same thing happened today at AoKH when I posted on the forums. Weren't the two accounts 'merged' or something? I have to log on separately with each one now, and if I log in with one it logs in everywhere, not to mention the granary/blacksmith vs. forums thing... Well, I'll retract the review and do it again with this account.

I think that I'll play a campaign and reveiw it. When(if) I do, may I join the board?

Yes, you can join as soon as you did a proper review for an upload.

I had a little problem: When I played "Bob and the Choson warriors" I won the first scenario, got the winning message - but I didn't get to the second scenario. I have then copied some old campaigns which I played before into a seperate folder and replaying the first scenario of the campaign freed the second scenario. Now is that usual? Is there a number of how many campaign can be in your directory without bugs or am I totally wrong and this bug has another reason?

Ya, this is very common. What you need to do is create a new player and 'home run' all the scenarios you have finished. Often then the new player won't work either - I have 'Richard', 'Richard1' right through to 'Richard4'. Strange thing is the bug appears in AoK as well. Once a player name won't open the next scenario in a campaign, it probably never will so you're best just to try a new one. It can be a little frustrating, but it only takes a few seconds compared to maybe an hour and more playing the next scenario.

Thanks, Richard. My method seems to work as well. Anyway, it's maybe a good idea for me to sort in good scenarios and bad ones so I know which ones are worth a second play and which not.

btw: I'm playing "The Solar Cult". I won't review because this one already has got 2 reviews. There's one thing which I'm wondering about: I managed to steal a villager from the green ones with my priest and now I'm building up my camp. Is this scenario meant to be played like this?

edit: What has happened to the dance club and other chilling areas?

Hey guys, I'm wondering if anyone of you played the Persian Wars 2 by Gordon Farrell. I remember I liked the first, so I wanted to check out the second part today.

I found out where all four leaders are, but I never managed to get to the ruins. To assassinate all four, however, you'd have to heal your troops (the hints say there are friendly priests near those ruins) though. Does anyone have a hint how to get near those ruins without being slaughtered?

Ah yes, that is a well constructed level, I remember that one. You really need to get to the ruins first, they are around the center of that main northern island, you should be able to reach it through the forests. Just keep exploring for it and you should reach it.

Great to see all the reviewing - I say every HG site should have a monthly reviewing tally and some form of competition - we would sure get a hell of a lot more reviews

Rug snatches back third place, while IICDO takes out the competition effectively, pulling in c4's monster haul of 16 with an incredible 64 scenarios played, after doing the impossible and reviewing Rise of Fiji!

Still two days to go, though I don't think I'll be able to get a placing myself, I'm sure the battle for 3rd place is still open wide.

It would be great to see some more scenarios/campaigns like "The Solar Cult". Are you still designing?

Btw: I'm bored to death so I'll go out for another review :P Maybe I can find another diamond.

Sadly as I posted in the other thread I don't have the time to design until late June at the earliest, though I am formulating ideas for a campaign ATM. (One which I'm determined I will FINALLY get finished.)

I've tried it again yesterday. I do now know where the ruins are and found the extra soldiers. But to get the last leader, you would have to get back safely and the yellow soldiers are waiting along the way. I tried sacrificing a cavalry to lure them away. But for that technique to work, you'd need to lure every single soldier away, because if just one is left when you bring your main group along the path, the rest will come back (I'm playing on hard).

I'll have to try it some more. It has to work somehow.

I took the time this morning to look through the triggers he used in "The Quest", and it took me nearly an hour just to glance through them, I would hate to think how many hours it would take me to make something like that (which I hope to). I think I'll stick to AoE for the mean time.

As an AoK designer, I hereby tell you that I think of the same comment on how you guys did those map design stuff. AoE map design is much more complicated then in AoK.

Sad news friends, I no longer have the time to keep this thread updated and play all the new scenarios, so it's only right to let it come to an end over the next month or two. The last 'campaign of the month' section will be for March.

I haven't got any specific date where I'll stop updating the thread, but the reality is I haven't got enough time to keep up with things here and run the thread properly anymore, and it wouldn't do it any honour to just let it slowly die away.

I've enjoyed the time keeping track of all the new scenarios and old discoveries, watching a new generation of reviewers develop over time, seeing authors get much deserved reviews, and seeing Andrea pump out record breaking campaigns one after another

If anyone wants to continue the thread or create one of their own I encourage them, and feel free to strip out any BB code or use any sections/ideas from this thread. I'll also be willing to give anyone any help they need if they would like to continue the idea.

The life of this thread though draws close to an end, so I just want to give you all a little prior warning and thank you for all the good times I had here.
