History

The review thread began back in October 2004 and ended around March 2006. It's purpose was to get people into reviewing other's submissions, as a way to help each other improve and give them recognition when they did well. We discovered some great scenarios and reviewed a large number of submissions such that, at least at the time of its closure, almost every recent submission, going back several years, had at least one review.

The thread will no longer be updated anymore as I have retired as an active reviewer, but the thread continues at its new location here. The remainder of the thread serves mainly as a historical reference, and some information will be out of date. I considered trimming it down to a mere redirect to the new thread, but I think it's better new people can come and see how things were in the past if they want to.

I've enjoyed my time with you guys and I'm sad to see the thread sink. Having said that, this is definitely not the end of reviewing - People always need support and encouragement, and for the measly amount of effort required to write a comment or review it is worth so much to both the designer and the downloaders. As long as people keep looking after each other there will be plenty of feedback and a strong community.

Overview

Reviews and feedback are a huge boost for a designer, and really support the community. If you play a campaign/scenario etc that hasn't been reviewed, pop in a review for it, it only takes a few minutes to write, when you have probably spent an hour playing it. Read the review guidelines if you haven't done so already, you can find them here

This thread isn't just about reviews, it's purpose is to talk about campaigns you have played, new scenarios etc, anything like that.

We aim to review everything submitted, so all designers get feedback on their work and know where they're at with their designing, and all downloaders have a rough guage of the quality of submissions, and a descriptive review to read when browsing files to download.

AoEH Unofficial Review Team aka The Super Heroes Club

It's like a very simple role playing game where you do reviews to level up.

-You must have submitted a review to join
-Under no circumstances can you take this seriously
-You tell me this:

*Your faek (fake) Super Hero name
*Your quote or description
*Your unit (any unit/building from AoE/RoR, or even AoK, or an RPG game etc if you like, as long as you can have some form of stats and levelling up
*Your special attack (optional)
*You can have a custom picture too if you like, or a custom attack bonus

The Points System

Each time you submit a review you may get points. You may also be awarded points at random times for this and that. The points go towards upgrading your chosen unit (getting armour etc, and eventually levelling up).

Upgrades: Simple Upgrades (mainly weapon/armour etc) - 50 to 200 pts
Uber Upgrades - upgrading your unit e.g. Cav to Heavy Cav - 500 pts

Message of Freedom, an AoE Scenario by TypX

4.4

Message of Freedom begins with only a villager amidst a town under attack - you'll probably want to get out of there before a sword finds it's way into your chest. The gameplay shifts to a FF and puzzle style, with some restricted B&D later on. Once you get a message to the secret base in the north it is up to you to avenge the Mastites and destroy the Nabri. Strongly recommended by Nanaki and myself.

Drusus and Tiberius, an AoE campaign by Richard Ames

October

Campaign of the Month

The Senate and People of Rome, an AoE campaign by Andréa Rosa

5.0

Senate and People of Rome is the greatest of all remakes, bringing together everything that is great about AoE into one campaign, a compendium of the important events in the early years of Rome, and an inspiration to anyone looking to remake their own level. With this campaign's two new 5 star reviews it bring's Andrea's tally up to 5 top rating campaigns, a monumental achievement for this great designer.

Runner Up

The Sons of the Lion King, an RoR Campaign by Hijja

4.9

Third Place

Death of the Morads (Remix), an AoE Scenario by chrisjen_81 (aka The Dark Archer)

4.7

November

Campaign of the Month

A Short History Of Lost Sumeria, an AoE campaign by Andréa Rosa

5.0

As we approach the end of the year the best has been saved until last. Andrea's newest offering takes on a new mythological style, while still keeping to his historically researched presentation and classical gameplay. You will see all sorts of new tricks and eye candies in this campaign, and learn a lot about Sumeria and the ancient world. Congratulations Andrea, you're the first to receieve campaign of the month twice in a row!

Runner Up

The Artillerist, an RoR Scenario by Sick Sid

4.7

This month had 29 reviews from 30 days, yet there were only 2 campaigns worthy of a placing. Luckily they are both very good. The Artillerist is a great FF scenario for RoR where you play as a young siege engineer who is entrusted with the sacking of Babylon. Your mission is in two parts, and you must provide the siege component of for your allied army, and conquer Assyria's enemies in its last days of greatness.

December

Campaigns of the Month

Annex of the Two Rivers, a RoR campaign by FireLegion_56

4.6

Tales of Udrania Part 2, a RoR campaign by c4master

4.6

Campaign of the month for December was as close a competition as ever. Tropper and C4master both released new campaigns around this time, which were awarded the first ever 'first equal', as I was unable to split them. On top of that Rug_Might unearthed a neat scenario by Kyle Leach, which had so far gone without a review. This was a very strong month for designing with the expansion as well, as all these campaigns are for Rise of Rome.

Annex of the Two Rivers is an interesting scenario based on the Parthian wars, with a double AVI and the first ever use of the new beta units alongside the overlapping units feature, and the results are outstanding.

Tales of Udrania Part 2 is the second part the the fantasy story 'Tales of Udrania'. Vandir now lives with the Haya Dona. One day they find a strange map which holds the opportunity to free Kunab, the old wise man of their village. Play the campaign to learn more of the fantasy tale.

Runner Up

Reluctant Guest, an RoR campaign by Kyle Leach

4.5

You stand on a foreign beach with 400 gold pieces, a body guard, and a scout. You have come to rescue your leader from a hostile king who holds him hostage. The fortified city on the hill is daunting, the pathways are guarded, and the local fishermen are forming a welcoming party with sharp, pointy sticks. If you do not think quickly and chose wisely, you will die here.

January

Campaign of the Month

The Solar Cult, a Rise of Rome campaign by Daniel The Master (aka Borruma_) - Reviewer: Richard

4.6

For those of you thirsty for a great mission to play, here's one for just you. This scenario of Daniel's was a great find, if you're feeling like a bit of RoR, this is the one to play. A new cult of fantacism has swept the lands, and your king looks to you to stop it. Tackle superior forces with leadership and skill, and prove that numbers alone cannot always win. The first great find for the new year, let's hope 2006 holds more great discoveries like The Solar Cult!

February

Campaign of the Month

A Battle to the End, a RoR Scenario by Lennart van Beek (aka PhatFish) - Reviewers: Richard, IICDO

4.3

If you're looking for a good level to sink your teeth into, here's a recently unearthed classic by Lennart, who is currently unearthing some amazing new stuff himself, which you can read about on the forums. Have a play of his first submitted scenario, and defeat the Mira in Ancient Japan, in a beautiful and creative scenario mixing role playing puzzles and B&D action.

March

Campaign of the Month

Richard & N00bs, a RoR Scenario by scenario_t_c - Reviewers: Rug_Might, Chris Mattox, Richard Ames

Ach, doesn't the thread look nice without the pictures

Well, I've updated the page anyway, hopefully microsoft can sort out their problems soon, though knowing microsoft it may be 6-8 months before we have images up again. Hope you all take some time to play some of the best campaigns of this year. I'll be doing a bit of a tidy up here soon as well.

On a positive note we ended the year with 14 reviews, and most importantly we have reviewed every single campaign and scenario recently submitted. Well done guys, show me another heaven who has done that!

If only there were more Super Heroes the world would be a better place

Hopefully this year I'll be able to get back into The Campaign/Secnario of the Month again. Currently I'm not into reviewing beceause of my new designing work on the Kush but I'll try to pop in a review from time to time.

While we wait for Micro$oft to fix the major security glitch that prevents us from posting images, let's have a pool on how long it will take them to do so. We can gamble with the points we've earned, or if you haven't got any points, er, money, or anything else that would be appropriate.

I'm going to say it will be 2 weeks until we have images again. And that's optimistic, IMO. I'll put foward 200 points. Let's hear your bets gentlemen!

Microsoft has released a patch for it already, which I guess is not surprising, it is one of the biggest security glitches this decade. I think if they failed to patch it within 5 weeks they could pretty much say goodbye to the software industry.

Hopefully we'll have the images back soon then, in the mean time everyone had better make sure they have downloaded the fix. Anyway, here's the first review for 2006.

http://aoe.heavengames.com/dl-php/showfile.php?fileid=1279&cmtid=1476#id1476

Let's try and chalk up 3 pages fully reviewed for the AoE scenarios section this month. There are only a handful of them left on the third page, so I think it is an achievable goal.

I posted about it in the designers board a few days ago. The info can also be found in the new sticky topic on it. If you have automatic updates on it should be fine, though you should make sure you have the patch installed, if you haven't had any recent windows updates done download it now, even if it takes a while, surfing the net is very dangerous without it. Hopefully the admin will turn the images back on in a few days, once people have had some time to patch their systems.

Dark Archer reaches his overdrive limit, shooting an uncontrollable arrow into the air. I'm the unlucky victim, and lose 200 points to him. Alas, DA, when I reach my overdrive in 2009 you will pay!

New Governor of Thoron has been sitting on my computer for ages (sometime around when I release the first DotM) so I've taken a quick look at it and it doesn't look promising (I truly believe I can beat it without doing anything) so I'll review it sometime soon.

Edit: I was able to beat the scenario by just walling up the unwalled parts my city and waiting while the timer (which was over 2 hours) run out. To amuse myself I also built about 6 wonders and tributed all of my enemies rescoures but when I finished I still had about 9000 of every resouce but stone which was at 8000.

The Battle of Kadesh is on my PC but it's kinda tricky. It seems to simulate a real set-piece battle quite well and has some create objectives, but the gameplay is tricky because a lot of units have to pass through long narrow valleys, and I don't think you can save your game because there are so many missiles, or at least it makes it hard.

Anyway, now that I made it through WarCraft3, I might have more time for doing another review in 2006.

Because I'm inactive again. D=

I'm currently learning to get good at AOK (oddly mostly playing random map games instead of campaigns) and I also have to get better at drawing, otherwise I'll get really bad marks in art. And if that wasn't enough, I'll have to try getting a practical training at the newspaper. And I want to spend some time with friends too.

=> I have hardly any time for AOE at all.

Do you have spyware on my computer. I mean really how can you find all the things I'm meant to be reviewing. It's truely amazing. Anyway don't bother it's not very good and you have to wait 2 hours to win unless you don't kill player 2 until the end. But still it isn't good.

Hoorah, we a new submission! Two in fact, the first of the year. Let's see these lads get a review by the end of the month as well.

If any staff are reading: Regarding 'Forest Trails to Freedom (beta)', has anything been done about the file? (It has a file not found error). It should probably be removed, I think there exists a full version of the campaign anyway.

Alright I'm not sure when I'll be able to finish my review of NGoT because I'm doing work for my dad right now (try to get money for a new computer ) and I probably won't be able to play much with most of my spare time going to check this forum, then playing lords and making sure nothings wrong in the forums then if still have any time I start doing more work on my cpn. BTW Rich when are you going to upgrade me to HHA?

Oh...

er, you see... The upgrade takes time. And also, I'm lazy. Don't worry about reviewing, Work > Scenario Design. Just don't spend your money on crap that you don't need

Rich my current computer has a processing speed of 166 MhZ. I think I do need a new one. Besides I've wanted a good computer of my own for years and now I'm closer to getting than ever, I'll get my results from NCEA next week then I'll be able to work out how much money I'm owed and can get the computer ordered. Anyway don't rush to update me I just wanted to know that you did know that I was upgrading.

there would have been another review from me (Fate of Atlantis) if I hadn't bought Grandia2. This RPG really steals all my precious time Anyway, maybe today I could finish the campaign. Btw: Looks like this campaign is worth a download. Though very old it's really nice to play. Scenarios are chllanging and the story is ok, too.

@TDA: I believe you DO need a new PC. I wonder if AoE works on a machine that old

Alright guys, time to get those last few scenarios crossed off. Let's try and find something worthy of campaign of the month as well.

I'm using this post to make an archive of all the old campaign of the month entries, so we can just keep the most recent ones, and avoid cluttering up the thread. At this stage I have just archived the entries from 2004, the others will follow a little later.

In the future only the last 3 months campaigns will be shown, in a more viewable format, with a links to the campaign and mention of the reviewer.

2004

This was our first year for the Players and Reviewer’s Board. I started the topic around October/November. Our first campaign of the month was the brilliant Memories of the Gupta Dynasty by Andrea Rosa, which has since received two more 5.0 reviews, and is revered as one of the best campaigns ever made. There were some more good campaigns from current designers like FireLegion_56's Exile and Tongrhj's Fall of Jerusalem.

There were also some great discoveries from the past, unreviewed campaigns of old that have only recently received the attention they deserve. These include Lennart's Efirum campaign, and the magnificent Legends of Sparta by Gordon Farrell. To this day great campaigns of old continue to be unearthed, making up a good portion of the Campaign of the Month entries.

October

November

I've recently found 2 great scenarios - One by Lennart, 'A Battle to the End' and one by Daniel the Master (The Solar Cult). I've reviewed the Solar Cult today, and a problem with Lennart's scenario has been fixed with an update. I'll submit my review for that scenario in a few days, once I have time to play it.

Let's also try to finish off that 3rd page of AoE submissions - there are only a couple more to go, and I'm exhausted. I give my last reserves of energy to Rug, Nanaki, and possibly DA, to finish off these last two reviews!

"Battle of Kadesh" is a huge pain. "The Treasures Hunt" is pretty much just huge, from what I can recall from playing it once. If I were to finish one of the two, it'd likely be the latter.

I also need to give feedback on blizzardius' scenario, which I've been putting off for too long now.

The story in A Battle to the End annoyed me because it was more a list of instructions than a story and that just put me off to much. Lets hope Nanaki can the last two reviews because I have too much to do right now to even do anything. At least when I get back to school I'll have some spare time (for the first few days at least) and a new computer.

A pain indeed.

If it wasn't for AOE's horrible path finding, it wouldn't be so bad, but...

Hey LF, didn't you want to finish my campaign someday? C'mon it's only 3 mission Don't be so lazy :-P

Anyway, I'm still playing "Fate of Atlantis". The first seven scenarions were quite good, though. I'm looking forward to finishing that campaign this weekend.

Yes, I wanted to finish that indeed.

Have you fixed that bug I told you about already though?

(I'm talking about the issue where the grey villagers block the gate)

I put some elevations on the entrance. Is there a way to forbid the player building farms? Or at least to forbid building farms right there?

Hope you enjoy it. Next time I will have to do some more playtesting before releasing my campaign for there have been too many bugs in the first version.

edit: I just realized that ToU2 made it to campaign of the month! Very nice Maybe I might finish my story some day Up 'till now I have plenty to do and scenario designing takes so much time. But I promise, there will be concluding third part of the story.

edit2: Posted review of "Fate of Atlantis". Watch out!

Hm... I'm thinking, if I review it now, you would probably drift down to second place. Of course I haven't made a decision now, as I didn't even play to the end, but we all know I tend to rate slightly lower than Richard... We'll see.

Quoted from Richard Ames:

Annex of the Two Rivers is an interesting scenario based on the Parthian wars, with a double AVI and the first ever use of the new beta units alongside the overlapping units feature, and the results are outstanding.

Actually, Andrea was the first, wasn't he? I'm sure I saw overlapped buildings in the flood scenario.

A picture explains it best

Andrea was the first to use the hidden units, FL was the first to use the all terrain/0 size .dat.

Edit: Never mind Battle of Kadesh, it will be moved to RoR.

Why not? Editing per files is easier than it seems to be. Just edit a default one, like aggressive, and most of the parameters are already set for you.

After that, you can do some fine-tuning and voila.

I've just completed my 150th review. Sadly, not a campaign to write home about, Rome only scored a 1.2

Here's to a quiet, relaxing month, and the small possibility I'll one day get to 200 reviews. Anyway, we have Lennart's fine scenario as a solid campaign of the month candidate, so we needn't cry our hearts out just yet

The month comes to an end, with Lennart's campaign taking the honour of Campaign of the Month.

DA's ascension to HHA is now formally recognised by myself (after a 189-1 vote at the UN - I was going to veto the call, but I was already in trouble for calling Kofi Annan a cheeky darkie...), you can read about it at the top.

We're also in need of a (real) title picture, if anyone wants to make one I'll be happy to use it.

Let's get back to some more reviewing next month - the second page of RoR scenarios is easy pickings, and just waiting to be filled.

I'll keep the news updates coming, I still have to sort through the campaign of the year entries, I'll put them up in a few days and then we can cut the campaigns from last year off the list and archive them.

Anyway, be prepared for another beast attack.
