Thought Exercise time!
If you could make up to three "official" changes to AoE and/or RoR, Not a full make over, but fix this/ change this/ Add this feature, what would they be? In order of importance to you?
I'll start:
1) Fix Pathfinding - use the obstruction system and pathfinder from Age of Kings. Units wouldn't get stuck on things, and groups would all end up together
2) Farm Queues - some sort of automatic farm replanting. Nothing worse than all farms expiring while I'm managing a big battle.
3) toss up between Windows 7 / Widescreen compatibility and Adding unit Outlines from Age of Kings.
Your top three?

Bah! More wants...
1. Players choosing map seeds in Random/Deathmatch modes.
2. Map seed info displayed in Scenario Instructions along with other game settings information.
3. Ability to access last played random/deathmatch map in the scenario editor. (i.e. lastplayed1 like when the game automatically saves scenarios under default1)

@Alexastor
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Age of Empires already capable of waypoints via holding the shift key down and clicking? Or are you talking about something different?

Sorry, I meant gather points. Or are they already in as well?

Oh, no problem, no gather points aren't in, but yes that would be a nice addition. I think along with that I'd also want patrolling and formations for soldiers.

Interesting thread, ES_MattP. Fully agree with better pathfinding, farm queues and walkable farms.
My suggestions:
1) Prevent catapult accidents. Give players an option/button to stop catapults from auto-targeting and attacking. Maybe make the "no attack" button (or was it "passive?" I don't remember, it's been a while) for catapults as effective as in Age of Kings: Catapults can still attack, but only selected targets. Nothing more frustrating than losing ten composite bowmen with one big *SPLAT* to your own cats, just because post-iron enemy villagers run through your lines.
2) be able to queue units in your buildings
3) enable the computer to build walls efficiently.
What has you ask?

I forgot a third change: allied AI players should stay allied with human players even if their units are damaged due to catapult/siege ship projectiles or WarElephant/Siege Charior damage aura or if one damages a converted unit.
