Welcome to the quick AoE & RoR FAQ. Here you'll find a list of questions asked so often that we lost count of it.

If you have questions not dealt with here please ask them in a separate thread so this one can be used for the really frequently asked questions.

Q: Where can I download da game?
A: At your local shop, at some places from a cereals box.
We don't support warez and no-cd cracks. Don't ask for them and don't advertise them. Expect to get banned if you do.

Q: How can I place gold mines, stone quarries, lions and other stuff on a map in the scenario editor?
A: Select Units, select Gaia from the Player drop-down list.

Q: How can I win the River Outpost scenario in the Egypt campaign?
A: This is a fairly easy scenario. The only hard part is reading the instructions. You have to upgrade to the Iron Age and upgrade your towers to guard towers.
For related questions you can consult our single player help section.

Q: How can I skip the opening cinematics when I start AoE or RoR?
A: Make a shortcut, open it, select the Properties tab, move the cursur to the end of the selected text box that has the program file name in it and add "nostartup" - without the quotation marks.

Q: How can I play the game with the midi music?
A: Make a shortcut, open it, select the Properties tab, move the cursor to the end of the selected text box that has the program file name in it and add "midimusic" - without the quotation marks.

Q: How can I save a multiplayer game?
A: You can't. It isn't an option. And that makes sense as it's hard enough to gather a set of people to play a game across the net.

Q: When I open a saved game the game crashes and returns to the desktop. Alternatively, the game crashes to the desktop in the middle of a game.
A: That's a problem of the patch, 1.c for AoE, 1.a for RoR. Don't play with the patch if you play against the computer only. You don't need a dual install to have AoE/RoR with and without the patch; simply do the following:
* Rename the patched files in the AoE folder to AoEpatch.exe and RoRpatch.exe (or use other names)
* Copy the original exes from your CD(s) to the game folder.
* Make shortcuts to all versions and place them on your desktop or in a games folder on your desktop. In the shortcut you can also add code to prevent the opening cinematics.

Do not delete the files with the patch. You need them when you play on line and for campaigns that were designed in the patched version.

Here's an alternative, posted by andycmdab:
I had extensively tested this problem before and I know when to save, save when there's no fighting going on, actually, there could be swordmen fighting but make sure there's no archers or baliistica firing -- it's that animation effects which creates the bug.
Q: How can I change the pop cap (population limit) for a single player game?
A: You can't. The CP will always cap at 50 pop. If you want to play with a higher pop cap for yourself, start a multiplayer game. In ROR you can set the pop cap in the settings screen. In AOE you need to add "Limit=xxx" (type a number instead of xxx, and don't include the quotation marks) to the command line in your shortcut.
Update: You can download an utility from the Granary section to increase the pop cap for all players in RoR here:

Q: Help me!!! I'm stuck in a scenario!
A: For hints about all scenarios in the campaigns and some more, visit our hints section:
If the hints there don't help you, or if you're playing a campaign we don't give hints for, ask your question in the forum.

Q: I downloaded a scenario /campaign. Now where do I save it to?
A: The downloaded file is a .zip archive, first open it, for instance with a program like Winzip or the default Windows program, and drag the campaign or scenario file from it. Save scenarios in the scenario folder and campaigns in the campaign folder.

Q: I got a problem with multiplayer games.
A: Try this:

Q: How do I make a screenshot?
A: Press Ctrl + F12. The bitmap is saved in the Age of Empires folder (where the .exe file sits).

Q: How can I run Age of Empires in windowed mode?
A: The original game does not support windowed mode but you can check this thread out for a workaround: DxWnd Utility.

Q: I get strange colors in Vista/Win7/Win8
A: Most of times it is related to a DirectDraw issue.
The solution is to add some reys in the Windows Registry. It does not need to modify any file. DirectDrawFix - Color Update will do it automatically.

For modders/developers, here is the technical detail:
"ID"=hex:XX,XX,XX,XX (REG_BINARY: 4 bytes)
"Flags"=hex:00,08,00,00 (REG_BINARY: 4 bytes)

The Flags value instructs ddraw.dll to ignore this data for systems before Vista. The ID value is the internal timestamp of the executable file.

To find the timestamp with a hex editor:
- Seek in the file to 0x3C
- Read the 4 byte value here: we'll call it idOffset
- Seek in the file to (idOffset + 0x08)
- Read the 4 byte value here: this is the ID
* If you stil have issues (colors are so bad that it's absolutely not playable), you may have the ATI/AMD catalyst issue.
Some old versions of the "AMD Catalyst control center" provoke this bug. Installing the latest version of the program will fix the color issue.

Q: I still have corrupted colors in-game (color bugs), what can I do?
A: The reason for this is usually some incompatibility of your graphics card with the 8-bit graphics used by the game. First of all - update your graphics card drivers! This may be enough to solve the problem. If you still have corrupted colors - open the Launcher, select Settings and check "Windowed Mode" then Apply. This should solve it. If your game resolution is the same as your desktop, the game will not be in a window even with this option On.

Q: Virtual Store related I can't find my scenarios, campaigns, save games or other files in game directory?
This is caused by Windows (Vista/7/8/8.1/10 with U.A.C. on), any programs that save files directly in system directories (like Program Files) have their files redirected to Virtual Store (Compatibility Files). You can find all your custom files in this location:
Replace with the account name on your PC and with the path to your game directory. For example, if the game is installed in "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires" and your account name is "John", your Virtual Store path for the game is "C:\Users\John\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Age of Empires". In Windows Vista/7 you can click the Compatibility Files button (in Windows Explorer) from game directory to go directly to the Virtual Store directory.
Remember that this applies to all files saved from the game.

Q: My custom campaigns are not saved by the game?
This is another Windows related problem (Vista/7/8/8.1/10 with U.A.C. on), for some reason .cpx files (Rise of Rome campaigns) are not allowed. You can solve this by running the game as Administrator - right click on the game or its shortcut (or even the Launcher) and select Run As Administrator - do this only when you want to save a campaign, you should not run the game as admin otherwise. If you can't find your scenarios while running as Administrator - check the Virtual Store (information above). Move the scenarios you need from Virtual Store to original scenarios directory before saving your campaign.

If you have any other questions please ask them here!

Thanks aoe_scout. I tried that but it did not work for me since I want to hear AOE tracks while playing AOE. RoR tracks still play even when the midi files are renamed with x in the front of it.

If you install the unofficial patch (link in my signature), it will take care of this problem (it's based on AOE Collector's Edition, which doesn't have a disc check). Works with any AOE version that has Rise of Rome Expansion (like AOE Gold).

Alternatively, you could try to create a disc image and use Daemon Tools or another virtual drive software to emulate the disc. I've tried this in the past.

UPatch HD - the unofficial (HD) patch for Age of Empires: The Rise of Rome - HD resolution, HD quality interface graphics, hundreds of bug fixes, new gameplay options and many other enhancements.

About a campaign which I plan to upload in the Granary, my question is, are all the scenarios(other than the first) unlocked for others aswell now, that it shows every scenario's name to me, as if they all are unlocked already. Does the system automatically lock the other scenarios and only show the next scenario after the previous is completed, if they upload my campaign from the Granary, or is every scenario visible, like for me in the moment of upload?

Edit: Nothing anymore, I noticed creating a new campaign account restores the scenario progress, so it's most likely as I wished when downloaded to from the Granary.

Hey so I found my original copy of the game (not gold or RoR)and decided to install it. It works fine up to the point where it tries to start a new game, then it's just stuck on 'Starting a new game' and I need to force shut down my laptop. I tried running in compatibility mode for windows 95/98, running as administrator and also tried the 1.1b and 1.1c patches on this website but it keeps freezing there. Any help?

Welcome. Do the other options like campaign and custom scenario's work or is Random Map and DM only affected? Also does the scenario editor load?
posted 03-11-16 01:42 AM ET (US)     283 / 310
It appears that it is just Random/Death Match. Custom scenarios Campaign and custom scenarios work fine, and scenario editor also loads but can't save scenarios. Apparantly I don't have enough free disc space?

Try a clean install without any patches first. I've never heard of this problem before, seems strange why the other options work fine without freezing.

Hi, big fan of the game and been doing some research on how to update the population limit. I have gone through the site and been directed to the upatch page to download the patch but having some problems. I have followed the prompts on the download page and downloaded the patch. The download comes up as a zip file and when i click on it my computer cannot recognise it. Can someone please give me a simple, easy step by step process on how to do the age of empires ror pop patch? Not really up to date with doing this sort of stuff and found website little bit confusing

Hi I tried this, no luck with changing the limit. I ran administrator as my computer is newer. I think the patch may have worked as i now can play random maps, but i do not know how to change population. The file downloaded comes up as a zip file but my computer does not recognise it. What is the next step you do after you download the population mod? I see people talking about going onto a mod directory but i cannot find where that is. Would me playing the game on a disc have anything to do with my problems
Thanks Nick

I have a new entry that might belong in these FAQs as Windows 10 gets more popular.

Apparently by default in Windows 10, at least from the so called Creators Update (aka. build 15063) onward, DirectPlay is disabled by default on a fresh install. You can enable it in Control Panel > Programs > Turn Windows Features On or Off > Legacy Components > DirectPlay

Without DirectPlay enabled in Windows you can encounter errors like "The application was unable to start correctly (0xc0000022)" or "The ordinal 4 could not be located in the dynamic link library"

aoe_scout, perhaps you can even implement the activation of DirectPlay in the next version of the UPatch HD installer, supposedly it should be possible for installers to request features to be enabled.

Well although aoe_scout may show up, I'd recommend to contact him in his site with these recommendations, maybe he would do something about them.

Thanks! I added this info to the help section of my site. But usually when DirectPlay is missing and you try to run the game, Windows automatically asks you to enable DirectPlay (at least that's what happened before Creator's Update). Anyway, I will see if I can add some check in the installer or something.

Hey Everyone,

I just downloaded my game again. I haven't played in probably 7 years.

Problem is. On my newer computers (i'm on a lenova yoga 3) as opposed to a SUPER old Windows 2000 machine,

All the fonts are showing up as ?????'s like the main menu. is 5 rows of ???????'s in boxes...

What can be done about this?

This is a basic question that has probably been asked alot, but is there an official AOE1 Encyclopedia of each Civ's Bonuses?

The only one that I found is on:

However, I believe that I've seen others, and anyway I'm uncertain of some of the information that I saw there. For example, it says that the Persians' bonuses include:
War Elephants and Elephant Archers have +56% speed.
Triremes attack 38% faster
However, the Heaven Games' Civ Guide for Persia says that the Elephants have +50% speed. So either the 56% or the 50% is a typo.

In my notes that I have from a year and a half ago, I have:
The Persians' bonuses are: War Elephant & Elephant Archer are 50% faster. ... And although the Persians have a +50% Trireme fire rate, it may not be useful for them: Don't expect that the Romans will build a major navy to fight Persia, since Persia is only connected by land.
I am guessing that I just made a typo.

As anyone who has watched a few Spirit of the Law videos knows that the devs don't know how to work with percentages to begin with. Odds are the ones with even percentage numbers are from the manual and therefore invalid.

Makes sense.

Not that its an official document, but I included an "AOE ROR Reference" file with the 5thLegacy mod (in the extras folder). It gives a better idea of what each civs bonuses actually do (yes, I did the math). I did notice a few issues regarding the "good" units that some civs get, but the bonuses should be correct as of RoR 1.0.

The only official reference is... checking in AGE3. (edited : BUT there is some hardcoded stuff in the EXE too, eg. phoenician lumberjack stuff...)
Official documentation is completely wrong about lots of such things (% bonus on various effect from either civ bonus or technologies)

Persian elephant speed has an absolute bonus of +0.5, added to a base value of 0.9, which gives 55.55%.

From what I remember, bonus info about villager work rates & techs/civ bonuses is very, very wrong
One shocking example is phoenician lumberjack work rate which is documented as huge (+65% or something like that?), is 36% in reality (and reduced to 20% in rocknror)
