Hey,

Having one of those rare "Good" weeks and was checking out AOEH for old times sake (and some fact checking). And saw the "Happy 10th Birthday to Heavengames and AoEH" news post.

So as fast as my 21 year old fingers could type, I zoomed on over to the forum, read a bunch of the post, then on the last page saw the "topic" Only ran one day! and was closed! Which means only one of two things, having it open for such a short time as a mistake or I was 15 days late. Based on 15 years as a webmaster I knew, It wasn't my mistake .

Great to see AOEH is still around, and HG is still growing. Also it was a very nice feeling to see my account still active after all this years! Still using my ES_Archangel as my online name most of the time, but the ES now stands for Extra Special LOL. At times just Archangel, or Gfa_Archangel for GamesForAngels ( http://www.gamesforangels.org/ com - not active ).

Still leaving ES without so much as a kiss my "behind" after coming down with a very rare autoimmune disease (Which by the way effects my writing, so if I drift subject to subject middle sentence - live with it ). I have been pretty much a house closet puppy. Downing pain meds like M&Ms and dozens of other pills daily. So much in-fact the government assigns two DEA agents to go with my wife each month when she picks up the refills.

Between my up and down times with the autoimmune, and the lawyers, book publisher, research and going thru mountains of emails of over ten years. Been slowly (like for close to two years now), putting a site together for a small developer first game, still pretty fall off in the future, but then the site is also . Nothing fancy as sites go, waiting on the site design to be completed by a old contact, and its based off the Nuke CMS platform.

Soon I hope at least to get a web blog up to hype my upcoming book about the Experiences and history at Civ II Heaven, AOE Heaven, working at ES/MS - the true story form the inside, what gamers don't know. If your a real old timer and remember Civ II or AOE or AOK Heaven or even when I worked at ES drop me a line at archangel@gamesforangels.org and tell me your experience at those site with dates, etc.

I hope to have this book out by this summer, but we found a treasure chest of information, or I should say uncovered from a ES employee and the lawyers are doing their fact checking etc before we move ahead on this or in other areas.

Not much more than that, haven't driven my 2000 Trans AM in 2.5 years. Last upgrade were made around that time, around 430hp, more underbody / wheel work. She darn firm and tight, lot of cars with more HPs, but few that can handle on the back roads, handles even better on twisting dirt roads.

In closing I would like to say I have no ill feeling against ES or MS. Just a handful of their employees who have a habit of lying. Which parts will be given to the press and full disclosed in my book.

My biggest regret was trusting one person, who I give some much of my life to 7 days a week to that was a true example of evil. And one marketing person who I spend some much time with (who now holds a higher position at MS), has a lost of memory after MS marketing and sells credited me with selling One million copies of the Age series (In Wired Magazine - email me if you want the month) thru my online efforts. 30,000,000$ profit for ES/MS? Anuff with the wine..

Its time to dine.

Gosh Darn, When I was moving from Civ II to AOE, a good friend back in April of 97 put my whole site on a CD and mail it to me. Back then I was on a 1200baud modem and the Civ II site was 400MB (Huge by standards back then, since maps for Civ II ran only 10k, and full mods around 100k. At work he had access to a 100Mb connection. How times change. On this CD it also has the Original AOE Heaven site - all six pages of it , with the dozen or so of the first released images and screenshots released by ES/MS. Seeing how my health is in the next two weeks I will post it up age.gamesforangels.org.

Really good to see you

Don't think I go back quite far enough to help with your memories ... I first came to HG at the end of 1998 to Caesar 3 Heaven. Didn't really visit the AoE or AoK Heavens at that time, only later.

Wow! Thanks for all the Good wishes and thoughts! Didn't think I would get a notice.

And to "Phill Phree" I guess you didn't notice my "Smiley Face" after my sentence you pointed out. Or weren't aware of my rare dry humor. Sorry if it sound like I was throwing sticks and stones at you. . And a Big thanks to you after all these years to still keeping people interested in AOEH.

Nice to see some names I do remember for the old days. Bought back some good memories. As for the book, If my I mislead anyone, it's still at least 9 month or more away now. The more interesting chapters are requiring a long review by the legal dogs. And it seems more stuff we want to add just keep falling from in our laps weekly.

The Book will be Published in a Gamer Style Guide Book. And we have been talking to interested parties about publishing parts of it online with a well known media house. Plus other options which I can't talk about at this time.

---------------------

On a different topic. I have notice a big change on the net with dev / publisher's and the internet. Seems their are buying the outlets that do their reviews, websites and even print magazine reviews. And even to the point cutting out the community sites on first hand information (if its "I can tell you this, but you can publish it" type of thing).

So the only place you get a honest review of a game now, is community sites like HG that are not owned by a Gaming Company or Control by one.

Also IMHO Community sites are still the best place for support issue, as I know from the other end, and many of you might already know. A community of thousands have a better chance of answering you question right, and also being the first to find bugs in a game that the developer or publisher does.

In other words, its Money both the dev/pub are to darn cheap to spend a faction of [30 to 60,000,000$ or more profit on a good selling title] to help the fans, so they can get their high pay checks and pump gas into their 100,000$ plus cars and Million dollar homes.

and The Community Sites are doing this job for free. When in truth they should be getting a monthly check from the publisher for doing their job.

Well I have a whole chapter on this, and my ghost writer, has the writing skills I don't. so.... wait for the book .

-----------------------------

Babbling to a other topic.

I think Vidguy was the oldie on the list I saw today. As the the age, Guess I was about 11 and Vid was about 8 then - LOL. - Was just my dry humor again .

I was 42/43 starting AOE Heaven and finishing up my last year in the Coast Guard as a Senior Chief Petty Officer (or E-8) Radioman (or Telecommunications Specialist as they are called today), on my 3rd tour in Alaska. The Juneau district office kind of sucked, not as relaxed as my other tours on Kodiak island years before.

But from our house you could see up close the glaciers, which kept the summers at a nice 65F for us, and not uncommon to see bear and deer in your yard on some mornings. A negative point also was only 17 miles of non dirt roads, a plus a short drive to work . Ops got off track here

Being the head Donkey in Charge of the Communications Center, I made my work days 5am to 2pm. This way I could talk to the off coming comms watch 7am-7pm and still have the day time did to keep the junior officers from screwing up security wise. Then back home and work on the Age site, until midnight, and repeat 5 times a week. It was killer hours but it paid off in the long run.

The last few months of my time in the Coast Guard I was doing phone conferences with the MS Marketing guy and their online PR company. Also I didn't a bunch of screenshots for the game, as got builds at the time.

A cool thing I still have from the "Day" is a complete I guess you would call it "Script" or Outline of the game, a hundred pages or more, that the founder of Stainless Steel Studios Sent me back then. To my knowledge its the only one around still, unless Mr SSS. has another copy.

Jump around allot, but with emails, letters, etc going back to the beginning, the book should be a good read. And with input from other Industry people I have known over the years giving their two cents will make it all the more exciting.

----------

As I said before my autoimmune causes me to babble and jump subjects and topics in middle sentence. So if I confused any one GOOD! HE HE. Serious, if you have a question, ask, I am armour heavy after years on forums .

Totaly awesome, we love the old images, especially beta or alpha ones

hmm... some fans of AoE are working on a new xpack to AoE/RoR, basically have figured out how to add and replace components of the game (without touching the exe). A main question though is if we can add terrain pallet to the editor? Don't know if this script of yours would help there? Would be cool to see what you have

Anyway as for your dry humor, learnt also to watch out for that bloody scotsman, lol. Try also when using our 'american' humor to instead of to use intead tongues, i.e. : p =

Thanks again for all the hard work and effort you did to make this site what it is

I didn't notice that this site is at it's tenth either, even though I've been here for over seven of them, I believe. Well, it's a fantastic game, even if I haven't played it in over five years. I've lent my computer out many times to friends who don't have them to play StarCraft and such on LAN networks on my floor in residence. They ask why I never want to play with them, I always just reply that of every game I've ever seen I've only ever really enjoyed the Age series. That, and I just don't have as much time for computer anything as I used to.

I can sorrowfully relate at least to the painkillers of yours -- I have chronic near-migraines and my doctors and neurologists have tried me on so much oxycontin in the last 18 months that it doesn't even produce an effect anymore, and I've had more pharmacists drop their jaws at my prescriptions and ask why I'm on medications for 80 year olds who get grand mal seizures than I can count.

georgeror, thats one old picture. You might want to photo shop that and add 30 to 40 pounds on some of those dudes ..

Then and now.

Starting in the back row:

forgive me for my spelling, to lazy at two in the morning to pull out a AOE Manual to check my spelling of names.

Back Row: 2nd from the left: Herb E, (arms folded). No longer with ES. last I heard working for another game developer (unknown which one).

Back Row: 3rd from the right: Sean Wolff, No longer with ES. Still in Dallas. Unknown what he's been up to. Lost his unlisted number and my "med condition" wiped out how to get to his house long ago. (Only was there twice and had to call multi times to get direction then!). Sean was a big big support in AOEH in the early days in the forums, in the parts of the early forums I could save, he was the first ES employee to visit AOEH forums and answer questions.

Back Row: Far right: Duncan M. Believe he is still with ES, also a early visitor to the AOEH forums and I would have to double check my facts now that I think about it. He might have beat Sean by a couple of two as the first poster in the forums. So lets hold who at ES was first for now.

Front Row on knees 3rd from the left: Brian Sullivan who now is the owner of Iron Lore Studios and has a game or two under their belts. A hard working guy with some interesting and fresh ideas.

Front Row on 4th from the left: Is the other Goodman Brother, who started Stainless Steel Studios. Have talked to him in 4 years or so. Have no Idea what he is up to at the moment.

Front Row 2nd from the right: Matt P: No longer with ES, talked to him about three years ago, we doing contact programming for this and that company(s).

And maybe 2-3 others are No longer with ES.

Well its never to late for someone at HG to sent an email to the community rep. at ES to remind the Company of the 10th milestone and pass it on to the Desk bound hot shots at MS. After all MS bought a gaming mag, and it should get a paragraph or two in my judgement.

But IMO some just forget, some don't just don't check the forums, some are just swamp with day to day work and life, etc.

Here is something that still shocks me! - My wife still plays ROR and something AOK weekly since the games came out!
I think its more for the Building part of the game than the warfare, but it does show the games staying power.

Always thought it was a shame ES couldn't made some "Classic" Expansion packs for AOE and AOK, the little manpower and expense involved would pay them back 10 times what they put into it IMO.

Welcome back. If it shocks you that your wife still plays the game every week, it will shock you even more that I still play it at least once every week, and when I started, 8 years ago, I hated war related games.
I hope she downloaded some of the great campaigns found here - there are a few 5 star rated ones that make Age of Kings look ugly.

Yes, They could have done a super xpack, but instead they just came up with the 'patchy' RoR. They did have a lot of good ideas too, if you look around at some stuff they did not include. We are tryin to make a xpack, but probably will pale in comparison with what they could have done.

The only reason I don't play it any more is that my CDs have been lost to ages themselves and it's impossible to find in stores the replacements. I don't much like to buy online, it's only ever been 50/50 for me in the past.

That's sad. Come live in the Netherlands. It's for sale here in all kinds of flavours - I recently bought the Collector's edition - just the DVD with AoE, RoR and AoK TC, sadly only with the midi music - for under 9. The Gold edition is for sale in almost every computer and games shop @ roughly 5. So, if you judge by availability of da game, we're a civilized country.

I could be the parson Anyway the aoe gold pack that has ror, but also has the bad music is on amazon for $10 new. You can get pretty good used ones for about $2. Or again Peter could try to win your favor by just sending it to you ASAP
