Unfortunately I was't able to get onto the 10 year anniversary thread during the allotted time. Right now I'm in a classroom at New York University where I am teaching a course in narrative theory for single player scenario designing. My students are hard at work on exercises and I'm... well, I'm goofing off! So I wanted to make sure I got my $.02 in, congratulating HGS on its extraordinary success.

Eight years ago I logged on here to upload my custom scenarios for AoE. Thanks to that opportunity, I was contacted by several game developers and have been a professional game writer and scenario designer ever since. Last year I was tapped by New York University to teach narrative theory in games... and here I am!

HGS has been a tremendous place for game enthusiasts like me to get their start, exercise their creative vision, test their mettle, and improve their skills. I have been challenged, annoyed, inspired, and forced to grow in new and important ways by my participation in this community.

HGS, if I can ever do anything to return the favor, just let me know! (I'm talking to you, Spiney!)

All my best wishes go with you for another awesome 10 years.

Nice one, Gordon. You, Ingo etc. were the first wave of designers for AoE. I came in at the tail end of that to begin the second.

Nice to see ya drop in, Gordon.

There's been so many VIP's coming around... has anyone seen ArchAngel lately? Would be interesting to see what he would have to say.

Zen's been here for quite a while... at least when this forum was started, I believe.

Wow Gordon Farrell. I never have beaten any of your campaigns but I know of your designs and how good they were. I just hope I can carry on your great legacy. If you have any time I would love you to see you in the SD forum or even Tribulation Designs.

Welcome back, Gordon . Your campaigns are very well designed. And it's nice to see some more VIPs here.

I haven't spent much time at AoEH, but I've been here for over 3 years (4 if you count the time in which I was just browing), and I love this place as much as any. 10 years is a long time. I'm only 16 myself

Congratulations on 10 years, and hope you have many more decades like this.

I didn't get to put something good in either. So here's something I composed later.

-----

First of all, sorry for my very short original message in the birthday thread. Dad has this new anti internet campaign happening, and I’m losing because of it. And I was at cross country all day, so I couldn’t log on at school. Anyway, I’m composing this offline and will post it online the next time I am able to access the wonderful world of WoW related killings, free porn, and AoEH. I’m referring to the internet, guys.

I came to Age of Empires Heaven in June 2006, but I had arrived at Heavengames (AoMH to be precise) earlier, in March. I made a total of 3 posts there, asking some random question that I now could answer in my sleep, then left.

In June, probably due to boredom, I pointed Firefox to AoEH, just to see if there really was any life left in this game, which I had recently started playing again. And it turned out there was.

The thing that struck me first about AoEH was the overwhelming sense of community. My intro thread received at least 15 welcomes from different people, something I hadn’t seen before, and something I doubt would happen at most heavens. It was, in my opinion, extraordinary. A few days later, Duan Xuan, a fellow AoEHer, added my MSN, and I played my first MP game in a looooong time. More importantly, I felt that I was already accepted in this group, not like in other forums where it can takes weeks/months/years/longerthenittakestofixLF’scomputer to get accepted into the community. It was great. Sorry LittleFreak, I just had to say it

Anyways, I soon started designing (again, I’m just to shy to post up my “early” work; a campaign about the comic book character Asterix, anywhere. I did it when I was 11 and it sucks!), and I found out that I rather liked it. It also turned out that I wasn’t very good at it, something I learnt the hard way after comparing my efforts to When in Rome by Rich Parker. My efforts, by the way, referred to a multiplayer scenario called “My god, get your own.” Check it out, I dare you

So after learning about my lack of design skill, and my lack of MP skill, why should I still stay? Because of the awesome community! Thus, I made VVV my “home” at AoEH, and slowly started to learn the art of Age of Empires.

I joined Tribulation Designs, and The Dark Archer taught me so much about how to do it the right way that it isn’t funny. I also learnt (from Duan Xuan) a hell of a lot of strategies, tactics, and golden rules to do with MP. And now, I try to pass those hints on to other people in the situation I was in 9 or 10 months ago. The wheel turns full circle.

In my time at HG, I have also tried to infiltrate other heavens (AoMH and AoKH mainly), but not with as much success. I have friends there too (*Giggy huggles Rainbow Randolph and Dark_Reign*) but it’s not the same as the AoE community. The AoE community, with the exception of LittleFreak, kicks ass.

10 years eh? That’s a long time. I first saw AoK in 2000, but was to poor to actually get it, so I got my first copy of AoE (AoE Gold, which I still have, and still use, today) in 2000. That’s 7 years ago. And it feels like forever. I dunno how you manage Phill, I can’t imagine myself doing something for 10 years. Then again, with a game as AoE, and a community as awesome as AoEH, it seems like something that could just be possible. Well, that is, if it wasn’t for LittleFreak.

PS. If LittleFreak happens to be reading this, I do have a reason for my behaviour. You want to know the reason? Um…er…it was PhatFish and Nikolol’s idea…they want the campaign contest results, not me

lol. Very cool g1ggy. Although I don't seem to remember teaching you much except for forests. (Also I wouldn't brag about being my student with my new quote "discipuli nostrum bardissimi sunt". )

It is good to see that the AoEH spirit is still as friendly as when I first joined and I am happy that I can continue that spirit on.

Zen, Angel Spineman and Reckless Rodent were, I believe, the 3 founders of HG when they took over Mike McCart's Heavenweb. All 3 are still active, mostly behind the scenes to keep the advertising coming in and the servers paid for.

Actually, you could blame my bigger brother, who says he'd fix it since like two months and just doesn't do it.

Hey thanks for all the warm words, guys! I've been hanging out a lot at CivFanatics these days, knee-deep in doing Civilization 4 mods. I hope to have my second one uploaded there sometime in June.

But I actually still lurk here quite a lot. Well, not so much in AOEH but in Stronghold, EE, Caesar 4 and AOK among others.

And I AM planning on making an appearance with a new SH2 map for the big contest coming up!

So rest assured, you haven't seen the last of me yet.

G1GGY:

That's a great story you've got, too. Yeah, I have to agree the community here is quite remarkable. But I don't think that's an accident. The excellent moderation, under the spirit and guidelines laid down by Spineman, Zen and others really has born remarkable fruit.

And of course, the game itself is ever-durable. The highly detailed pixel-based art still holds up very well!

Ah, I missed the party thread too. I was actually online that day (in my time zone) but Phill opened it late. I was already back in camp when you guys started spamming it.

Giggy, glad to see that you're so at home at HG. Yes, I still remember the first time you came in here too, and all the frustration I went through trying to teach you MP. Good to see that you've become such a good forumer and player now.

Gordon, in all the HG games that I play, I've only actively designed for Caesar3, and I didn't have any opportunity to interact with you. Hope that you'll hang around to the support the designing community in HG for its future games. Oh, I'm going to buy SH2 Deluxe second-hand some time next week... thinking of buying Civ4 next time too. I don't know why, but I've got a craving for buying games even though I've no time to play them.

Wow I can't believe nearly a month has gone by since I checked this thread!

Don Xuan: I am a HUGE admirer of your C3 work. I think we swapped a couple of posts over at C3H... thanks for the good words. I think you'll like Stronghold 2. Just remember it isn't balanced very well after the early phases of building your castle -- gets too easy too fast. But there are a ton of VERY challenging levels to dl at SH2H. Hope you enjoy!

Nikolol: Thanks for the good words! Glad you got a kick out of it!

G1ggy: There's a teeny teeny tiny chance...
