Yes, I played demo specifically designed for the convention. You played as Greek, with a Full Tech Tree in Post-Iron and with lots of resources and buildings to start with.

It was in a small Mediterranean map designed for you to test the different units and strategies. Even in Post-Iron, the Jihad tech was not automatically researched, but was left as your choice to research it or not. Also with the Full Tech tree, both Siege Ships and Fire Galleys were available

I really liked how it felt, just like the original games, but with revamped graphics. Also, I am not 100% sure of this, I felt the siege units were nerfed (which is a great thing). The Helepolii and H. Cats seemed to fire slower and not so accurately. I admit I welcome these changes. I also noticed that some building icons reminded me of AoM's. I don't mind it. I really liked AoM.

The game is still fast paced and the destruction, when you are aggressive occurs quite rapidly, again, like in the originals, different from the relative slowness and much more defensive game mode of AoK.

People seemed quite interested as there was quite the queue waiting to play it. Also I was surprised to see several females playing the demo. Back in my day, I could count them with the fingers of one hand.

I was able to share some moments with part of the Staff of Forgotten Empires, some of which come here sometimes. Maybe they will say hi. They were all a cool bunch, same to Joe Homes, the community manager at the official site.

I was able to ask some questions and get some answers, I wanted to write them down, but I forgot to, so I'll try to make a transcription but I am afraid I may not necessarily be 100% accurate. My bad :b

Also many of these questions have been answered elsewhere, but eh, I hope you don't mind.

Q: I thought this game didn't exist for Microsoft anymore, How did you keep all of this secret? I mean before E3 no one but you knew about this, you could work for the CIA or the KGB
A: *Laughs* Yeah we did a good job not leaking it.

Q: Why is the demo set in post-Iron and with Full tech tree?
A: We wanted people to try as many different units and strategies as possible, and we feel FTT in P-I is a good way to do so.

Q: I it true that all the original campaigns will be there?
A: Yes that's right, we also corrected some of the inaccuracies in the map and historical parts of the campaign instructions. We have two historians as consultants in our team, they have been doing lots of research to try to get history accurate.

Q: What about Age of Empires IV? Do you know the historical setting for it?
A: Sorry we are not involved in that.

Q: Are there plans for an Age of Mythology 2?
A: Right now we need to focus on getting AoE DE out, and after that we will focus on the DEs of AoE II and III. But maybe there would be something in the future.

Q: I am fond of the arrows flying in a straight line, like in the original game and not in arcs like in AoK.
A: Yes we are using the same engine as the original games. We wanted it to remain as close as possible as AoE, and not to make it a mod of AoK.

Q: The animations of the buildings collapsing and the details in terrain textures and cloud shadows look neat.
A: Thanks, yet we feel they still need to be tweaked a bit more. The buildings collapsing seems to happen too fast, we need to slow them down a little bit.

In some moment I have ran out of compliments, in my opinion the game is as great as it could be, asking for more would be greedy.

Finally some pictures Sorry for the picture quality, my camera isn't good in darker environments :/

This is embarrassing but here I am, with the fellas. I got other picture, but for some reason it was overwwritten D:

Sure I did too Jan dc. It is a nice experience to finally meet face to face some people you have been interacting with virtually for years.

I'll indeed pay close look to what you and your teammates will deliver in the future.

I can't wait for the game to be out!.

This is my favorite part of AoE: DE so far. Judging from the trailer, the rewrite of the Yamato campaign is as good as one can expect.

Though I wish they could also have the historians research and review their building designs - not the overall shape, which adheres to Ensemble's originals, but the decisions they made on the details.

MrFixit to the rescue! lol. Sup you need to use some HTML to resize the pics and link them to the actual size (see the edits I made in the OP for future reference). Updated.

I envy you. Wish I could have gone but there was no certainty on tickets being available I see Cysion, some type of ancient Hittite figure, Alexastor, and the guy on the right is Jan?

Those AoM and AoK icons are placeholders until the actual ones are finished. Pretty sure this is an older build and not the latest one. I love the new look of the world where the sun is always shining, don't change it, the graphics and animations are excellent. I'm not sold on the user interface, but I'm keeping an open mind until I hopefully get a chance to play the beta. Very curious about the AI and the Editor.

Here's IGN's 14 minutes of gameplay in HD. It is the same Gamescom demo. The best look we've gotten so far.

Full soundtrack. I like about half of the tracks, not too keen on the some of the orchestral parts. It is well done though. However IMO Rippy's is superior and I like his tracks much more.

About to pre-order, take my money Forgotten Empires done.

Thanks for the links Phatfish.

Yeah I told the guys i begged you to come with me, but that you were too important ruling the Low Countries xD

Too bad you didn't come. Never believe internet, there's always tickets available, you have of course to wait for them to allow selling more to you. I had to wait two hours to get in, but i did and bout the tickets for friday when they were supposedly 'sold' already.

But is okay, we all know you are a super fan of the game and the last image shows so! xD

If I had known that, or if the unveiling event being held on monday was announced earlier I would have gone. So much misinformation on tickets being available... the train trip to Cologne would've been like 70 euro's too so that needed to count if I could have bought a ticket with 100% certainty... Yup, the internet is an evil place. Well at least one of us made it there I'm glad you had fun and experienced the event!

Speaking of the overhauled campaigns, since they will be fully voice acted, I assume some form of new triggers are present in the new editor. It would be weird if we couldn't do custom voice-acted scenario's ourselves, right?

To be more accurate, only the instructions, loss and victory texts in the menu are voice acted. There will be no voice acting in the scenarios themselves.

I was at the event in cologne as well and must say that it was a very enjoyable little party.

It was also very nice to meet Jan, Cysion and the rest of the team, which are all very fine people. I think I was chattering a bit too much, but Jan was very patient with my prattling!

Btw, from the gamescon demo I saw that we can still only queue one type of unit...I hope they will change that for the final release. That aside, I think the devs did a really excellent work with the remaster, although there are still many things to improve

And like many other things, it DOES work in RockNRor

Seriously with the source code it would take no more than 2 minutes implementing this

The ability to create multiple units from the same building at the same time is actually not a thing in RoR :P

But just like many other things in AoE, we kinda expect them as they're normal in modern game. For this issue specifically, sadly it's not a 2 minute change, we're tracking the issue though.

Hey Cysion, nice seeing you here!

Yeah, I remember that in RoR you could only queue 5 units of the same exact type, but I think you will agree with me that this is not really a good thing for a 2017 RTS game.
It's great to know that you are working on it, you guys are doing an excellent job with the remaster!

I was excited to work on the Yamato campaign so I hope it meets your expectations. Rest assured, that campaign is now appropriately grounded in the fascinating real-life history of early Japan. I hope you enjoy playing it!

I could fix it easily without the source code, don't tell me game developers can't, or I should seriously apply for a job there

What ??? Of course i can enqueue more than 5

That wouldn't be historically accurate... only men were around during those times, with the one exception being Zenobia, who gave birth to everyone while living in a tower
