Announcement trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=keI83oLw-_4

Official site:
https://www.ageofempires.com

The news says there will be beta multiplayer sign-up, but the website is currently offline for me.

I've been waiting for an HD remake of the first game since AOE2HD was released, so I'm very happy about it.

The art style is considerably different, but it doesn't look bad. My only complaint is that I miss the red-colored roof of the Greek tileset.

The designers of this remake are clearly aiming for more realistic visuals, but I somewhat miss the game colors being a bit... brighter. But one could argue that the colors were in high-contrast in the 1997 game due to the fact that most of the map was covered in the fog-of-war, which made the graphics look darker.

The blog post they put up compares an original MIDI track to the DE version. So it would appear they are basing the new music on the MIDIs not the Redbook audio.
The music they've picked to showcase is a bit ambiguous, it was featured as a midi in AOE, ROR and also in redbook format for the ROR soundtrack. But the music displayed on the news update seems to be the midi version instead of the CD one.

But I hope they pick the redbook music. The midi for ROR is just a lower-quality version of the same music featured in the disc. While for AOE although the music is different, it is much less refined than the ones available in the redbook format.

The music sample they posted definitely sounds newer and better, but the reverb is just off the charts. I'm having a hard time focusing on a particular instrument and there isn't any sharpness like in the originals. Everything just blends in together too much. Maybe it's just a matter of taste on my part but I've never liked over saturated reverb.

Well, at least they should keep the original redbook soundtrack along with the new soundtrack. Also because the game will have a classic mode, I just hope that they don't use the midi soundtrack.

In the other hand, we will have new and unique wonders for every civ? They already remodeled the greek wonder, and doesn't look like the Colossus of Rhodes.

hey, check it out the sample soundtrack, they updated it
and I liked it much more than the original one they posted, this sounds much more like the old vibe!

ps: after watching over and over again the trailer and looking at the screenshots I must admit that I'm being concerned with the game looking too cartoonish, don't you guys think?

The Wololo, needs more retakes, it still doesn't sound right. I much prefer the first. Tbh, I prefer the narration in age of empires 2 over the voice actor they used. It just doesn't sound right for aoe. I like the music on it's own. But I don't think it fits, it doesn't sound like aoe music to me even though I can find certain melodies present. It is nice but sounds nothing like the one they compared it to.

I feel like I've been nit picking the sound to much but if you're going to do a DE for RoR you've got to do it right.

EDIT: I take that back, the music is great.

Maybe it's only a fool who'll perilously journey out to what might not be there. But if you want to solve problems, you don't just solve the ones that are there, you find more and make more and go after the impossible ones.
The neanderthals never ventured into the unknown and they went extinct, so who are the fools?

It is great. Believe it or not I actually got goosebumps hearing the new remastered track for the first time. Though that's also nostalgia hitting me, obviously. I agree on the wololo sound effect though, the unedited original is still the best.

I don't think it looks cartoonish. The perception I have is that, considering that the background elements in the original AOE were VERY bright (terrain, water...), this made the sprites look grittier, darker.

Now, in the Definitive Edition, the terrain is not as bright as it used to be, so the foreground elements become the focus of our attention, that's why they seem "brighter" or "cartoonish".

Try playing an AOE match with no fog and the map fully revealed and you'll see what I'm trying to say.

I think FE used the Age2 palette, which explains some of the changes in colors (Greek roofs for example), though I could be entirely wrong. Just a hunch.

Well that may be the case. It is also possible there is no palette what so ever. I do agree with R1sing, they don't look cartoonish, but dark and gritty.

Each unit has it's own palette now, so it looks like full 32-bit colours although under the hood it's still 256. Per unit though!

Yes, the terrain definitely looks similar to AOE2's.

But I think they've changed the roof color of the Greek buildings due to the changes made to the Roman ones:

If they still used the same tone, they would look too similar.

If they would rewrite the original campaigns that would be great. Those were easily aoe's weakest parts.

I hope they don't tweak with the balances too much though.

And yes DE is Iron Age only
For real?. That would make me sad...

I hope the remastered version of the game increases the population limit.

And one more thing:

How possible will it be to add these following feature to the game?: trading gold for food or stone or wood. How? I don't know. Maybe by creating a new building in the game or by adding that option in the market building

I'm not sure about campaigns, but there was a Reddit post on /r/aoe saying that they were using UPatch as a base for game balance.

I don't think so, they highlighted a Bronze Age Roman TC in a news update on their site.

A population limit selector for singleplayer mode would be very nice. There's no reason to keep it restricted to multiplayer matches.

Maybe they'll implement the Trade Workshop into the game? :P I think that's highly unlikely, but something to improve late game where resources become limited would be nice.

Ris1ng:

As for creating a new building for trading gold for food or stone or wood, maybe it would be better that the building is available only from the iron age ( also that it requires to first develope certain technologies ) so that the game is more interesting and challenging

It will be in, 100% certain of that. Just without functions. DE will for the most part stay true to the original game, so don't expect any new features on that part.

Looking forward to this yes. It is going to be neat revisiting the classic, and the changes are of course more impressive than AoK HD's, but of course whether they are all good remains to be seen. Those recreated marketing shots and vids don't tell it all. And the Roman TC changes are quite drastic.

I hope they put the demo campaigns in as well, as they were a lot of fun. I also hope that this beta thing includes the old AoE demo multiplayer map, because that got played the hell out of back in the zone.com days - it was always amusing how many were playing the demo on top of the numbers playing retail.

Balance is going to be very interesting. I'll have to look at what upatch does, but hopefully all civs will be allowed in games online lol.

I'm actually pleased that they are pushing the Windows Store with this, as it NEEDS a big hit. We do actually know that MS can do it, zone.com was amazing and has never been matched as far as ease of matchmaking goes, not to mention that the experience we had on dialup back in the day has never really been matched in a lot of games lol. Hopefully this is the second coming because the UWP situation along with Play Anywhere is an appealing concept if they can just get it right!

20 years. Well done keeping this place going; it has probably been around half of that since I last showed up .

You really got me there D:
When my father arrived in the country (he found that) the Gasgaean enemy who had come inside the land of Hatti had treated the land very badly. And the Gasgaean enemy whom my father met inside the country consisted of twelve tribes. The gods helped my father, (so that) he slew the aforementioned Gasgaean enemy? the tribal troops, wherever he caught him. And what he held, that my father took away from him and gave it back to the Hittites.

I just hope the devs learned their lesson from AoM and AoE2HD. And microsoft too, give them some cash to work with...

Choice of stained glass on the intro is confusing, as it brings a medieval connotation to me. The graphics look a bit odd, bit fuzzy and too realistic(like shaders and grit). Little disappointing, since part of AoE1s appeal is its sharp iconic look, moreso than its successor AoE2.

Am i excited? No, more worried and nervous. Would i buy it? Depends on if the feel of the game is the same. What i think needs to happen for it to be good;excellent performance without FPS tanking, good pathfinding, and good performance under load, meaning complicated scenarios with 8 players not making lag.

"Excellent could be any map that has the quality of a ES random map or ES scenario. AoK is an excellent, award winning game. That's where I'd start." -AnastasiaKafka

"Hard work is evil. Bitmaps are stupid. Working on a scenario for more than one afternoon is stupid. Triggers are stupid. Testing your own scenario is stupid. The world is stupid. You are the Greatest." -Ingo Van Thiel
