Well, looks like the wedsaz petition worked.

Only hours after the petition was posted, wedsaz accidentally stumbled upon his RoR CD in the attic and by total coincidence, managed to find a Windows bootable machine. Then by night fall, he had made his way back to the zone ...

Congratulations wedsaz on your return to the zone!

Well, for those who are curious, he didn't demonstrate to us (yet) his fabled Minoan Fastboom strat but he did prove that he is not a coward by showing up for several games with myself, Blitz, Leper, Benoit, Korean and KGB_Death_Angel. So for this he should be commended.

Bottom line is that we all had a lot of fun, even if wedsaz is a little, er, "rusty" (as he put it).

Anyway, wedsaz good games last night and hope to see you on the zone from time to time.

My appearance is not mysterious; it's the second weekend since my new job, the first was spent chasing after a horrible bug in UrMud (with a large virtual bug swatter).

As for the fastboom, I haven't been able to replicate it on medit. In last night's games, FB investments gave much lesser returns than I'm used to and the navy required was much bigger. I suspect fishing rates may be lower for some reason, maybe FBs gather shorefish more slowly than seafish? Will experiment. ( now that I have RoR installed )

I think I'll start by trying it on other maps, see if the results are different.

Anyway, I'll probably be on the zone again next weekend, every weekend thereafter, and practicing my scouting in single-player between weekends.

SF gathering rate = 0.40f/s.
Ordering your FB to start fishing - how much time does that cost you?
How much time do you lose when your FBs come out at exactly the moment a new Villie appears?

Last night was alot of fun...IMO. I had a good time. It's hard to explain, but it was much more fun for me to play with people that I "knew." We were one big dysfunctional family.

Who is going to post some screen shots? I took quite a few, however I am not bright enough to get em here.

Thanks all.

Rusty or not, wedsaz pretty much wiped me off the map one game. However he was Assy and I was Choson. Nevertheless, he kicked my arse. (Same game) Dave had forward built onto my land. He Tool attacked with Slingers...probably 10 or so total. The kicker was how quickly his Cav followed the Tool attack. Another thing I noticed is how well Dave attacks on the water and the land at the same time. It is an interesting situation...to see Slingers in your town at the same instant your docks are being flooded with Scout Ships.

GG all...we need to do it again soon.

1. I had seen what MrFixit listed as the fishing rate, but he didn't differenciate between SF and other fish. I tried it in the scen editor and they both came out the same as a farmer though.
2. Ordering my FB to start fishing doesn't cause a large delay, since it's the main thing I'm doing.
3. Rare, and not much delay on the fishing since I give it priority.

I had done math to compare 40w forests to 75w ones and found the former would be faster (because of that half-batch at the end of 75w trees), but then I thought "what would happen if 2 or 3 villies chop at the same tree?" ... the math suggests 75w trees would then become advantageous, so I'll have to check that out. I also noticed most of RoR's forests are composed of 40w trees, whereas AoE also had 75w forests.

I'll have to do some more testing.

I also tried the scn editor - hence the .40 f/s.
I've never seen 75 w forests in AOE - perhaps you came across them in a custom scn? Then you can make whatever you want. come to think of it - try to let twoe villagers chop away at the same tree in a forest - it isn't easy, trust me.

1. It was online, and I saw 75w forests quite a bit because when I started playing RoR I actually *noticed* forests on medit were all 40w. Maybe it was in that AoE trial map, "Multiplayer Rumble"? Dunno.
2. I have a hard time getting them *not* to chop two per tree, they seem to like being 20 villies around the same dumb tree. Sort of like the farmers all trying to be on the same farm when theirs runs out.

I did further tests in AoE, RoR w/o patch, and AoE w/o patch. That's not it.

Then I tried it on RoR w/patch yet again, and my tool time was down to 9:45 instead of 10:30. I also noticed that I had enough wood for a 3rd dock (and a few extra FBs from it) early on, and got housed early (had the wood, forgot to build it) which would delay everything by like 20 secs, so there's potental for improvement with a bit more practice. Too damn rusty.

You really gonna need that third dock to get enough FBs out fast. and my villas always try different trees - my bad luck perhaps.

I had fun last night! I just wish I didn't have the sync error problems. I think I missed out on giving at least three butt kickings (but who is counting).

wedsaz:

You can go down three roads here after last night....

1) Never play RoR online for another year until forumers get you to make another experience.

2) Go "investigate" in several hours of single player games why things don't work the way you remember.

3) Join us nightly (or every weekend) and learn how to play on the Zone. This would be my suggestion. Actually give up all your talk and look over legitimate strats to win the sea, boom, and ultimately kick butt.

Dave:

I'm looking forward to seeing the screen shots of wedsaz's villagers boning my Hoplites. Poor wedsaz in that game. Nothing like me treating him to an early exit after not playing forever. Dave respected Benoit's experience and "allowed" him to live early in a game or two, and I feel I have been "considerate" playing some forumers lately by not just destroying them at the beginning, but rather try to have a good fun game. For some reason..... with wedsaz it was different.

Anyways see ya all on the Zone!

Shiny:

The name I have been using the most lately is "BlitzkriegComin".... notice the "correct" spelling. I have been on the Zone a lot lately (as usual).

As for our games, I would be proud of what you did. I'm not taking away anything from your talents/abilities. I just don't go into games with forumers "looking to find out who is the better player". I like to have fun playing all of you guys here. There is little point in me going in with one of my "high powered, finely honed" strategies that I have used hundreds if not thousands of times just to beat somebody senseless that is giving an honest effort in learning the game. I would rather have a fun game where it is competitive.

I remember when myself, Leper, Dave, and many others were just getting on the Zone and it seemed like people lined up to beat us senseless. What was the point of those games? Nobody had fun and they certainly weren't competitive.

Having preached all of this, my tendancies are very brutal on Medit maps. I have my patterns/skills set in concrete from thousands of games and it seems and people tend to get the same ole' Blitz, reguardless of your skill level. I boom big and always have a huge Tool navy. That right there is brutal cuz it is all over once I kill fishing boats in Tool Age.

Yup. It was definitely a fun night. We must do it again.

Sumerian_Leper:

It is true isn't it? That playing with the forumers is more fun than with "strangers". Think of all of those games that me, you and Blitz were in together and met all kinds of rudies and unpleasant jerks.

Blitz:

I snapped quite a few shots from the aftermath of several games that evening. And yes, shots wedsaz' villies boning an army of hoplites are there too. I will see what I can do about posting them. Sure you don't wanna see screen shots of my tool army in your town though? J/K

Hehe, that was fun boning away at those hoplites. Would be a shame to give up without fighting.

Played a few more today and my startup is definitely improving, I'm getting better tool/bronze/iron speeds with bigger econ. Probably because I'm remembering to build my houses more, delays due to lack of housing suck.

Oh and my allies kept on resigning even when we were doing fine. Held on by myself for like 30 mins after both my allies resigned in that last one, and they were doing ok before they resigned. I was iron at least 10 mins before anyone else (I was roman in pocket, so it made some sense). By jove, we could have won that one!

RE boning hoplites: Does a hopper even take any damage from a villie? I mean, if a unit has X armor points, can it take hits from a bunch of units with X or less attack points without a scratch?

Anyway, I had fun Saturday night and learned a lot. For one, that I shouldn't keep all that extra food unused in Tool - this rook is no longer building a single rax as a prerequisite for ranges and stable.

After everyone else went to bed, I stayed and played an island ffa with two other rooks. After an evening of being tool rushed by Dave, this felt soooo easy.

Next time we're on the Zone, it would be nice for us rooks to watch Dave and Blitz go at it one-on-one, no holds barred. I'm sure I could pick up some tips from seeing something like that.

Benoit:

LOL. wedsaz' guesture of attacking Blitz' hoppies with vils was just a joke (I think, I hope).

Hoppies have 120 hit points and 17 attack while villies have 25 hit points and 3 attack. Thus, it takes a hoppie two wacks to kill a vil while it would take a vil 40 bone wacks to kill a hoppie. Blitz had 5-8 hoppies come in on wedsaz' last holdout with 8 vils or so. The battle was over in about 2.25 seconds. LOL.

Hoplites have 5 armor, therefore villies only do them the minimum 1 damage. So it takes a hoplite 2 hits to kill a villie, and 120 hits for a villie to kill a hoplite.

Yes, it was a joke. Theoretically it would have been possible for me to keep running and eventually win, but it would have taken all night and wouldn't have been much for for anyone, whereas boning away at blitz's hoppers was fun. 15 villies *could* take down a hopper...

I call a watcher's seat right now.

I think once you were gone Dave came over to KGB's house for a Leper pinata party.

Once again, it was fun boyz.

The long and the short of it is this: They played more as a team and we didn't.

Unfortunately, Benoit synced out and then later both Blitz and KGB synced out. Benoit was doing pretty good actually until he popped out. Good going Benoit! And KGB said later that Leper had a nasty army of cats and CA's going. So it was a pretty heavy battle.

Anyway, it was a good game and once again we had fun. This is great! So much fun to play with you guys. We gotta try to do it again.
