Subject : Age of Empires DE from Microsoft Store
Dear forum members,
I bought AOE DE from Microsoft Store and it installed the game in F:\WindowsApps. It is a folder designed to be inaccessible and I read is even encrypted.
I tried to use Advanced Genie Editor (aok.heavengames.com/blacksmith/showfile.php?fileid=11002), but it doesn't work. I suspect the main reason is the program can't get access to the content of the installation folder. I suspect most other mods that try to meddle with game files will suffer the same problem.
I am guessing people are using the Steam version of the game to mod it. Is there a way, other than buying the game from Steam, to meddle with the game files as required and if so, how ?

Exactly what I want to know as well.
So this was a while ago but I'm just now running into the same issues as I desire to do some game customizations and edits myself. What was your solution? Did you just repurchase and download from Steam? It kind of sucks to have to do that but I'm thinking it's what I'll likely have to do if we can't get into these folders without messing them up.
Let me know what you did if you found another solution. Thanks man!

There is a way to modify the files from Windows Store version but it is highly unorthodox - will share a little secret: Find yourself a copy of tiny windows 7 and run it from a usb stick (or a seperate drive). Locate DE's files on your hard drive where it is installed and right click the file, then use the decrypt option (yes it has that!). Now it should work and load with AGE3 or maybe Turtle pack. That is the only way I know of.
Perhaps the most dumb decision MS has made is by not allowing anyone to mod the Store version. What were they thinking? I wouldn't bother spending even more money on getting the Steam version, not worth it.
so @PhatFish if you did not buy neither, is it a good idea to buy the Steam version to save you the heartache or are you saying the Steam version is not worth it because there is something wrong?

I bought the Winstore version. If you are still keen on buying DE go for the Steam version which IIRC allows some modding without the crap of the store version.
