The folder data is for AoE, data2 for RoR. Just save your files there and it should work.

If you want to replace current AI files (RM/DM games):
The computer player in RM/DM games will automatically select from the current AI files. The "IMMORTAL" AI files refer to the hardest difficulty setting (RM only?) - you could edit these or the other various AI strats. The DM AI files are named "DEATHMATCH".
If using for a specific scenario you have created:
Open it within the scenario builder and assign the computer player your new AI file.

this has been quite disappointing so far. i've got the .AI files to work if i place them in the data2 folder and rename them e.g. from "Ultimate Egypt 1.5.ai" to "IMMORTAL EGYPT.AI" when i use the highest difficulty - thanks rasteve for that
the .per and .cty files dont get used at all however. no matter how they are named, they just dont seem to get used. i canceled out the other possibilities by deleting every .ai, .per and .cty in the folder and the computer still behaves the same and builds cities in the same pattern. then i've deleted the last .per and .cty files in the folder, meaning only one .ai file, the .dat, .col files etc were left, no .per or .cty in the folder, and the computer still builds and behaves the same way. he doesnt seem to need the .cty and .per files at all. i even cleaned out the data (not data2) folder to make sure. same result
only thing i couldnt do was to remove the respective .ai file, then the game would not load
anyone actually has some clear idea on how AOE uses these files?

Do I need to paste my .PER files in BOTH my AI Folder AND in my DATA2 Folder, or just in one of them?
I made a PER file and pasted it in my AOE1 Directory’s Data2 folder. But when I did that, my new .per file did not show up in my PERSONALITY entries in my AOE1 Scenario Editor.
Next, I pasted a second new .per file in my AI folder, so that the new per file was in both my AI folder and my DATA2 folder, and it worked.
I think that the answer to my question in bold above is that I just need it in my AI Folder. Maybe the Data2 folder is where my Random Map Multiplayer rounds get their Random Personalities from.

The "ai" folder is for Upatch HD.
"data" is for the original AoE.
"data2" is for RoR.
So, if you're using Upatch HD you will need the ai/per/cty files in the "ai" folder; otherwise, put them in "data2" for RoR, and "data" for just the original AoE.

Wow this thread has been majorly necroed.
Ive found the best way to get the RM ai to change is to edit the specific files already in the folder.
Persia for example has several files and if you change "persia priests.ai" into an archer spamming ai that plays 60 vils, the computer will follow that build order
