The Broad Swordsman has more hit points, attack strength, and armor than the Short Swordsman. The Broad Swordsman can be upgraded to the Long Swordsman.
Researching Toolworking, Metalworking, and Metallurgy increases attack strength. Leather Armor, Scale Armor, and Chain Mail increase armor. The Bronze Shield and Iron Shield increase piercing armor.

This guy is an improved edition of the shortie and costs as little but the upgrade takes rather long to complete. Because he has more hitpoints and attack strength than the shortie, in fact he has more attack strength than a cavalry, he’s a lot more useful in late Bronze Age warfare and beyond (he survives one hit by a Catapult). The biggest advantage of the infantry units is their low cost, the disadvantages are speed and the vulnerability against archers and Cavalry. Roman broadies attack 30 % faster. They’re a low-cost unit that can be very effective when used in large numbers.

The appearance of bronze short swords led to further advances in weaponry as competing cultures sought an advantage in military technology over their neighbors. Where the early short swords was primarily a piercing weapon, the broad sword evolved as a slashing weapon. The width of the blade increased strength sufficiently to support a slashing attack that could cut into armor and break short swords designed for stabbing.
