12:15PM EST – Game Commander Trial!
Kosh3 let me in on an interesting bit of info.   Basically, it’s a voice recognition program that works while you play games.   Here’s a better description:

Game Commander is a voice command input application that takes you to the next level of PC gaming. Game Commander saves you from the myriad of awkward keystrokes used in today’s games by assigning voice commands to them. No more delays trying to remember odd keystrokes to issue a command. You want your troops to attack? Simply say, “Attack!”

All of the keyboard and joystick controls that you’re used to are left intact–Game Commander simply supplements them with voice control so you can respond to every situation in the fastest and most natural way. Use the keyboard and joystick for firing and steering. Use your voice to issue commands that would otherwise distract you or slow you down.

Game Commander uses speaker-independent voice recognition technology, so no voice training is required. Furthermore, it comes packaged with a high-quality, noise-canceling headset microphone and ready-made templates for several popular PC games, so it can be installed and used immediately to start controlling those games by voice. It’s easy to configure Game Commander to control your other favorite games as well.

    • Speaker-independent (no voice training required)
    • Includes command templates for many popular games
      • Starcraft
      • Descent: Freespace
      • Quake II
      • Battle Zone
      • MechWarrior2: Mercenaries
      • Diablo
      • Microsoft Flight Simulator 98
      • War Lords III: Darklords Rising
      • Urban Assault
      • Outlaws
    • Easily create your own command templates for your favorite games and share them with your friends

I have yet to try this, but if anyone else does, let me know!  Check out some more info athttp://www.gamecmdr.com/

12:15PM EST – Chinese Showcase Coming Up!
The showcase maestro himself, Elliot Chin will be telling you all about Cho-Ku-Nos, demolition ships, and the cool civ bonus of the Chinese.  Check Gamespot tomorrow, unless they are taking the day off for Memorial Day.

12:15PM EST – Battlefield Coming Back!
Just talked to BravenIrish and he had some good news!  The Age of Kings Battlefield will soon be hosted on the Warzone Gaming Network, since problems forced him to leave gamesmania.  Congrats, it would be a shame to lose a site like that!

What type of person are you?

Whew! lots of stuff to catch up on…

2:00AM EST – Heaven Previews Age of Kings!
They went, they saw, they played (they drooled).  Angel Omnivac and the rest of Heaven’s representatives at E3 got a great look at our #1 most anticipated game.  The preview can be found here at Age of Kings Heaven at http://ageofkings.com

    2:00AM EST – Campaign Contest!
Heaven’s Gaming Sites will sponsor an
Age of Kings campaign design contest soon. Cool prizes for the best three historically accurate 3-scenario RoR campaigns about The Mongol Ascendancy (~1200-1294). Last day for submissions will be August 25th. Angel OldGrex
will post more detailed information in a few days.

    2:00AM EST –
    ES Art Team Wins Award!
The Dallas Art Institute presented Sean “Lord Soth” Wolf (shown left) and the rest of Ensemble Studios’s talented artists with an award for continuing support for the Institute.  May ES employees are graduates from the fine art school.

    2:00AM EST – Upcoming Tournament!
The Playing Fields (www.theplayingfields.co.uk) and Dennis Publishing (www.pczone.co.uk) have announced a major computer games tournament in the UK. The winners will carry off the biggest cash prize to date in the UK (possibly in the world?), 10,000 pounds sterling. The winners will also walk away with a top spec games computer each, to add to the 1,500 pounds sterling they will already have won by qualifying. The total prize purse for the competition sponsored by 3D Now (www.3dnow.de/gaming_uk2) and Microsoft Gaming Zone (http://zone.msn.co.uk/competition) currently stands at an incredible 50,000 pounds sterling.  What’s more, its a no lose scenario.   You pay 20 pounds to enter and then get your 20 pounds back and a bag full of goodies when you turn up to qualify. Sounds too good to be true? Mosey on down to www.ukpcgc.com for more information on the biggest computer games tournament the UK has seen.

    2:00AM EST – Any Aussies?
Got this letter from an Australian Ager:

“I am an avid fan of Age of Empires eagerly awaiting the arrival of Aok,
however we cannot play on the Msn gaming zone due to the bandwidth
bottlenecks associated with the distance. do you know of plans for a
pacific center for Msn gaming zone?”
     – John Whybrow

IP games are probably your best bet for now.  If anyone lives in Australia and wants to play, send John a note 🙂

Well, I am going to bed after an exhausting day.  I finally saw The Matrix tonight, and Star Wars: The Phantom Menace over the weekend.  Both were very good flicks.  I have more news to post,   but* I think I’ll save some unmtil tommmorrow when I a m not falling asleep at th…r.jdja…

    2:00AM EST – A Little Explaining 🙂
I was a way for a bit and sever troubles kept me from getting at least one day of news up.  We now return you to your regularly scheduled programming 🙂

    2:00AM EST – Omnivac Interview!
Angel Omnivac did an interview with MS Games for their official Age of Kings site.  It’s a pretty interesting piece of work, detailing how Omni came to work at Heaven and his impressions on how popular AOK will be.

Gamesweb: Since your finger is on the pulse of the Age playing community, how high is the anticipation factor in regards to Age of Empires II?

Omnivac: I think Age of Kings will be more popular than Age of Empires. Everyone that’s played AoE will want to play AoK, and more new fans will get onto the Age bandwagon because the Middle Ages is a time period that more people know about, let’s say, than the Antiquity.

2:00APM EST – GX Network Previews Age of Kings!
    Calbear
from Thresh’s Firing Squad has posted a new Age of Kings preview after seeing it at E3.

“First and foremost, the graphics have been overhauled. Four tilesets based on Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Asia, and the Mid East will be included in the game. The engine now ranges from 800 x 600 on up to 1280 x 1024 if your computer can handle it. The graphics maintain that same AOE look and feel, with exquisitely rendered details and lifelike animation.”

“Remember how one person who took control of the seas could just utterly dominate you? New “demolition” or “sapper” ships have been added that can suicide themselves into an enemy fleet and cause massive damage. The balancing factor is that they’re hideously expensive, but such a unit should probably be implemented with great care.”

The demolition ships sound very cool, and I’m not sure if they have been mentioned yet 🙂

    When is your day?

    7:30PM EST – Patch for AOE/ROR!
This was mentioned on the Ensemble Studios news page.  A patch for Age of Empires andthe Rise of Rome expansion will be released after Age of Kings is completed, which is scheduled for a October 1999 release.

A few other newsbits from ES Web:

    • There will be a MS Gaming Zone enabled multiplayer trial version of AOK released shortly after AOK
    • Raider Civs themselves (Mongols, Vikings, etc) are still in, but not as raiders.  The Raider concept did not work out well in playtesting. They still have special bonuses, units, and tech trees that cause them to be generally more aggressive and (more) raider-like than other civilizations.”
    • Recommended system requirements for Age of Kings will be: P166 or higher with 32 MB of Ram. It runs under Windows 95, 98, NT 4 and 2000
    • ES/MS has “collectively” shipped more than 3 million copies of AOE, ROR, and the Gold Version to the world.

To give you an example, I remember reading somewhere that selling 250,000 copies of a game was considered a “hit.”  Nice job ES/MS.  🙂

    7:30PM EST – Correction!
I made a little mistake last night when posting news.  It turns out that Age of Kings wonGamespot’s 2nd best strategy pick, and not the official E3 award, which should be announced next week.  Sorry for any confusion and thanks to Archangel for pointing that out.

2:10AM EST – Age of Kings Wins 2nd Best Strategy Game at E3!
Angel Omnivac posted the news from gamespot that in the strategy category, Age of Kings was rated 2nd only to the heavily anticipated Black and White.  Freelancer took top honors with best game, surprising many.  www.lanced.net is the gamestats site for this upcoming hit.

2:10AM EST – Turkish Showcase Today!
Gamespot gets two links from me today 🙂  I’m not sure when the civ showcase will go live, but ES web reports that it will be up today sometime.  If it isn’t up yet here, visitEnsemble Studios’s news page for a funny rendition of what AOE would be like as a MUD.

    Angel Omnivac perhaps?

    3:10AM EST – StarWars Opens!
If you have tickets, you are a lucky dawg.   Maybe you are out begging like this guy.   Anyway, if you go and see it, say hello to the beautiful Natalie Portman for me 🙂

3:10AM EST – Washizu Helps an Ager in Real Life!
I was at Electronics Boutique tonight and I saw someone about to buy either Final Conquest, an unauthorized AOE add-on, or the Rise of Rome.  I could not bring my self to watch any further, so I intervened, like any good ager would, and highly suggested ROR.  He asked me if there were any other good games set in the ancient period like AOE, and I told him that AOE was really the only good RTS game in that time, but suggested Caesar 3 🙂  If you have never played C3 or visited C3 Heaven, you should.  The game is incredible.

3:10AM EST – AOE on the Mac!
That’s right Mac lovers.  I don’t know why you are reading this, since you have a Mac and AOE doesn’t run on one, making it ridiculous for you to check out fan sites for games you can’t play, but if for some odd chance you are, this is your lucky day!  Angel Omnivacreports that he saw AOE being played on a Mac there and there is a possible release time set for the summer (not official)

place your bets now folks 🙂

1:20AM EST – Turkish Showcase Delayed!
Because of E3, Gamespot delayed the latest civ showcase a few days.   What’s that?  You need AOK info?  Well, thanks to The_Stranger, we have a lot of AOK info posted in the forum.  I’m not kidding, it’s a TON.   Here’s a recap of the biggest confirmations:

    • Starting with a scout rumor has been confirmed, although it may have been tuned down a bit to prevent first age rushes.
    • Hot-keys are basically the same
    • Hot-key selects idle villagers or military units
    • Gates (not Bill) are not player controlled at this time, they open automatically
    • Boars are “kinda like smarter elephants”
    • No food gathered at storage pits, and seperate pits for wood and mined resources
    • Team abilities for certain civ combos (Briton’s teammates possibly get faster producing archery ranges)
    • Market lets you buy or sell resources, changing the relative price throughout the game depending on scarcity

There is even more there, but you’ll have to read this amazing post for yourself!

    Anyone got tickets for this?

1:15AM EST – Upcoming APC and Forumer Tournament!
Members of the APC clan and a few frequent forumers have gathered together to start their own tournament starting May 24th.  Rules and settings can be found here.   The teams are all posted here.   There are some crazy names like Ike Turner’s Honkey Elites, Dangerous Old Men, and Tool Rush Bait.  heheh  Good luck guys and may the best team win!

1:15AM EST – The Boys are Back!
Make sure you check out the other HGS sites this week, cause there should be a nice crop of E3 info for you as our Angels fly home from Los Angeles.  I can’t wait to see what they brought home!

5:15PM EST – Happy 2nd Birthday to AOEH!
Two years ago today, Mike “Archangel” McCart started that counter on the nav bar and got the ball rolling for the best Age of Empires site on the net.  Two years and nearly 1.7 million visitors later (an average of 2300 unique visitors per day!), it still stands as an excellent resource for agers everywhere.  In recognition of this momentous occasion, I’d like to announce that very soon we will be giving out 5 Age of Kings T-shirts in an upcoming contest.  If that news wasn’t big enough for you, we will also soon haveHeaven’s Gaming Sites T-shirts available, designed by Angel Hamlet.  The details for both of these will be stated later, since many of our guys are still at E3, but I couldn’t think of a better time to make the announcement than today. 🙂  Thanks to all of you!

12:00AM EST – The Hustlers of ES!
Last night, I was online doing my update and Angel Mackconvinced me to play ROR.  We had trouble getting some people, but managed to drag the infamous ~borgboy12~, with his ever present scrolling signature, in with us.  We needed a 4th, so we asked ES Communications ProgrammerPaul “Winter” Bettner if he was game.  One of the few ES guys not at E3 this week, and working late, he decided to indulge in a game.  Now, for most people, this would be fun enough, but Winter decided he was tired of losing to Angel types.  He got his brother Dave and Angelo “Desperado” Laudon, another ES programmer, to join the game.   Winter said that since they haven’t played ROR in a long time, the teams shouldn’t be 3 on 3, with Mack, borg and I vs them.  Supposedly, Dave couldn’t even tool in 25 minutes and the two programmers were rusty at their game, so we went with a 3 vs 2 vs 1, Mack and I being the 2, and borgboy being the 1.

Well, that screenshot says it all.  I had a nice start and had Angelo where I wanted him, but not enough access to his vils to slow his Bronze time down.  They proceeded to kick the crud out of Mack and I.  Borgboy only made it halfway through the game.   Good game ES, but next time, we want a fair fight! hahaha

    12:00AM EST – E3 Info on AOKH!
Go check out what I have been working on for most of the day.  New screenshots and a list of confirmed features, all at your best source for Age of Kings info, Age of Kings Heaven at http://ageofkings.com

    12:00AM EST – Granary Update!
Angel Grenadier boasts the following additions to the Granary10 new ROR campaigns, 2 new AOE campaigns, 6 new ROR single player scenarios, 4 new AOE single player scenarios, 3 new ROR multiplayer scenarios, 7 new utilities, 1 updated utility, and 33 new taunts today!

Have you checked out an Angel Cloud lately?

    10:00PM EST – E3 Kicks Off!
Whew, just making this daily update in time 🙂  I moved back home now that the semester is over, and just got settled in, while my Angel comrades are partying in L.A. at E3.  Guess who else is there?  Rebecca Romjin!   I’m sure at least ONE of our Angel studs will steal her from that dork John Stamos.   How did I find this out?  Here’s some great links for E3 info:

11:00AM EST – Maimin_Matty and Out4Blood Chat on the Zone!
Ever wonder what makes these two ROR greats tick?   What strats they use?  What music they listen to?  Find out in the text of the chat from last night’s Zone chat!  Here’s a few funny and interesting clips:

AOE_Gs> Maimin and O4B is it true we should send in villies with military since they’re always standing there looking inocent.. I mean give them some action they do all the work!! So should we? Like send a shrimp boat with your trireme?

Out4Blood> i prefer to use those guys on economy – since they gather about 500 resources in 10 min

Out4Blood> thanks AOE_gs, i am not sure i unnerstand question

maimin_matty> how do you mean send in vils with military?
maimin_matty> as in sending them in as forward builders?

    AOE_Gs>
yes cuz they do all the work
    AOE_Gs> and that
AOE_Gs> and give them a peice of action

Out4Blood> ummm…. better to have them working

    ———————-

Lord1234> I am wondering if you like this technique i do in DM. I make a box using a walls while the enemy is advancing. I then send 20/15 villys to make ballista towers while the opponent is still in the box.

    Lord1234>
i wanna know if u can give me hints to make it better

Out4Blood> i think walls in a dm are a waste early on

    Lord1234> i know

    maimin_matty> interesting strat

Lord1234> but i use it when i am desperate

maimin_matty> i as far as boxing strategies

    Lord1234> and it really works

Out4Blood> better spend time making stables or siege workshops

maimin_matty> you should try out choson boxing….

    Lord1234> i do
Lord1234> i box greeks and hitties well

    ———————-

_Methos_ST> Matty, is it true that Canadians excel in Age of Empires because they live in a frozen wasteland where there is little else to do? =)

_Methos_ST> Seriously, in your opinion, and also that of your faithful cohort out4blood, what is the greatest mistake that a newer player makes?

    maimin_matty> hahahaha

    Out4Blood> arg

maimin_matty> well i like your first question

    Out4Blood> whew

    Out4Blood> lol

maimin_matty> yes frozen wasteland is an excellent excuse to stay in all winter playing aoe

Out4Blood> i think newer players do not concentrate enough on the economy, and hence get crushed by an opponent’s military…

maimin_matty> second question is a great one

3:20PM EST – Washizu is in the Driver’s Seat!
With a lot of the other Angels heading out to E3, Washizu will be working double time!  I’ll be doing the news over at Age of Kings Heaven at http://ageofkings.com and, of course, right here at AOEH.  There’s some great info at AOKH about an upcoming Joan of Arc special on TV, so check it out.

3:20PM EST – Starsiege Tribes Contest!
Gamestats loves to give away Starsiege games, and honestly, I am not sure I understand how the series works.  I know Starsiege Tribes is the all multiplayer one, but I had though that Starsiege was out before that, and then it just came out a few weeks ago.  Whew.  I just can’t wait to play Age of Kings this fall 🙂  This is the word from gamestats.

GameStats is pleased to bring you yet another HOT weekly contest! This time we are giving GameStats readers a chance to win one of 7  copies of Starsiege Tribes! Like many of our previous contests, we expect this one to get a lot of response so feel free to enter it every day!  Check it out!

    One final left!!!

3:15PM EST – Cool Things in Age of Kings!
A lot of Age of Kings information has come out of the AOK forum recently.   Sandy Petersen and Greg Street have been posting regularly!  Next week, you shouldn’t see any posts by them.  Why, you ask?  Two words:   E3!!!   Even Heaven’s Gaming Sites will be well represented at this years E3 in Los Angeles (the city of ANGELS!).  Check out all the newly released AOK info at Age of Kings Heaven at http://ageofkings.com

I’ll be doing HGS news today 🙂
