Heaven’s Ladder
Reaching the stars
Continue to send suggestions and comments about what should be the ideal ladder for Age of Empires. Even the craziest ideas are welcomed, and you certainly don’t have to restrict yourself in the same old pattern of previous ladders. It can be a totally new concept. Actually, we’re planning to design a new concept, and this should be very interesting. – Omnivac

Beta Scenario Template
Heavens Master Plan

You can edit scenarios now, with the missing units of the Age of Empires’ beta version. Simply download Heavens Master Plan in your scenario folder and start editing in the scenario builder. Our heavenly webmaster Archangel made a large map (8 players) and add in some 30 COOL looking wild horses that didn’t make it in the final version. You can use the MOVE unit function to move them around and place them as you wish.

Also added, are ten Nuke Troopers for each of the eight colors. They can also be moved around. The numbering of the Nukers are Player#1 TOP (north), with Players#2-8 in sequence below the the first unit grouping. Look also in the diamond map, to be sure you have the right color as Nukers looks all the same. Keep what you want and delete the rest. – Omnivac

Speed limit
The Agers have voted
After many talks and arguements about games’ speed in the past month, the results are finally in. 53% of Agers prefer to play at normal speed32% at fast and14% at very fast. Which is about right, at least from my own personal experience and the numerous multiplayer games I have played.

I still maintain that very fast players miss alot of the subtleties of Age of Empires. There’s so much you can do in a game, that can’t be done at very fast speed. Most of the good players play at normal speed and sometimes at fast, and Everybody have tried all the different speeds, so make your own conclusion here. It’s very clear in my mind that you can improve yourself only by playing at normal, and get there the full scope of the game.

How many times I’ve heard that faster games have less lag. This is absolutely not true and makes the lagging worse. Faster speed means more informations going in and out. Again, make your own conclusion here.

Finally, take other players in consideration. If someone reduce the game everytimes you speed it up, be considerate of him. At best, make it clear before the game what speed is to be used. Remember also that others are on the map and speed shouldn’t be changed depending on your situation, like slowing the game when youare fighting, and speeding it up between battles. If everyone do this, it simply don’t work. And stop that crap about being the host and having every rights. You only make a fool of yourself, and peoples won’t play with you anymore. They will simply kill you off their ICQ list. – Omnivac

Odd teleportation revealed
Beam the ressources up, Scotty
Villagers working at a distance. Myth or reality? Cheat involved or not? The great mystery is revealed at last.

Most of agers don’t know about this. Even me I didn’t knew until today. Others might have experienced this odd occurence in a game, of one or more villagers working at a distance without knowing why. This mystery have been revealed, thanks to AlexndrDuhGreat and can now be recreated at will.

Without a doubt, this a bug. You simply select a villager and make him use a waypoint before starting to work. He will start mining, gathering, etc… at the waypoint instead of proceeding to the ressource. This will work only if the target ressource is in his field of vision to begin with, so at least you cannot mine halfway across the map, and you cannot use the fields of vision of other units too. It must be his own. Also, fortunately, this will work only one time as after his first trip, the villager will go the ressource in question and continue working normally.

As for wether or not it is useful, should someone use this to his advantage, is not the case. This would requires a TONS of micro-management clicking waypoints for each trips. Still, in the beginning, how to know if someone does this with 3-4 villagers cutting the trees around his Town Center, to get the wood faster for a Storage Pit? Certainly doable watching the woodcutters, while other villagers are picking berries and you’re waiting for new ones to come out from the Town Center, and making them cut the trees from a distance. I guess with practice, someone can get very good at it and this makes me wonder… – Omnivac

Multiplayer scenario pack
Collection of scenarios

I can say that in the last two weeks, my main buzz have been playing multiplayer custom maps. Some maps are very good on the CD, like Marooned, Gold Rush and Hills Country. Others like Border Patrol are quite interesting with 2 teams having to get their artifacts in a flagged area, right in the middle of enemy territory. The most interesting aspect of these scenarios is the presence of cliffs, which I miss in random maps now. Brings a whole new light to multiplayer.

If you have a good idea for a multiplayer scenario, the gang at Shai’Tan AOE Home Page have started a collection and are looking for new maps. When the pack is done, expect only the best of the best to survive the scrutiny of one of the greatest AOE team on Case’s Ladder. – Omnivac

Coop Games
From the Message Boards’ post “Multiplayer using SAME player number and team number?!”

The Evil One: In a multiplayer game, is it possible for two players to play the SAME PLAYER# and TEAM#, and thereby move the same units on the board??? This would be a very interesting game of cooperation, where one player would be the “Resource Manager” and the second player would be the “War Manager”. Is this possible? Has anyone tried this?

It is certainly possible, and quite challenging too. You have to know your partner(s) almost perfectly to be effective in a game. If not, conflicting orders will abound as well as differents course of action taken by each members of the civ. The oddest thing about it is playing while doing less. It’s hard to get use at first, moving only military units and not wondering about your villagers back home. You must trust your partner(s) at each tasks they have. The Tavern have very good basic articles on the subject in the Special Interests section. Directions for shared civ. coop by frink, and The HOW-TO’s of CO-OP Play (Part II). by Leo Brum are worth the read, to any aspiring coop players out there. – Omnivac

Varied toughts and comments
new article by Netzalcoyotl can be found in The Academy, under the strategy section. Good comments about the too often neglected standard victory condition, where the artifacts are reduced to the poor role of scouting units. Some useful info also, like what happens to the onboard artifact, when a transport sinks. Recommended to every new players out there. – Omnivac

You have played so many multiplayer games, that you simply don’t keep the count anymore. Still, something is missing. The multiplayer experience would be far more better if…

Big thanks to Chris Di Cesare and the Microsoft Team for supplying the prizes for our latest contests. Out of sync
Part II: Randomness
A good article written by David Perkins about the randomness of video games can be found at OGR. You can read all the article here.

Take Age of Empires, for example — the only real-time strategy game I’ve played which is not only nicely done, but has the best random map generator I’ve ever seen. Age’s random map maker is one of the reasons I praised the game highly when I reviewed it several months ago. Every multiplayer game begins with the same sense of wonder, as players must explore to see where the nearest stone mine is, or how far the nearby forest extends, or whether the body of water close by is a river, a pond, a lake, or an ocean. Further, the random map maker never (in my experience) made maps that were unfair.

I agree mostly with all of the article, and hope for the same things too. I don’t really agree though, that the random map generator of AOE always builds fair maps. Does that bother me? Not at all! That’s the beauty of random maps and more the result of bad scouting when players don’t find any ressources. Sure, there is the map with gold stuck on a beach between water and trees, or berries 3 elevations higher than where you can build a Granary. But I don’t think it was ever the reason of my downfall. There’s enough food sources around you to pick the best spot, and by the time you build a storage pit for a gold mine, you have the choice between 2-3, even 4 spots sometimes. It’s all about making the right decision at the right moment. Don’t be affraid to get out of patterns. Forget the granary as the first building (excluding the houses) to build when you see berries in a bad place. Go for a storage pit and build it in the middle of a pack of dead gazelles, and drag those two elephants there. I think it’s a poor excuse blaming the map for a defeat. Bottom line is, maps are not always fair. Actions of players make them fair. – Omnivac

CD-ROM addendum
About authors’ copyright

As a follow-up to yesterday’s news, I received some emails today saying that indeed, authors of scenarios have been contacted by at least two German companies, and have been asked if their work could be used on a scenario collection CD. My hat goes to them for asking permission and respecting the wishes of everyone. The other issue that bother me is that they’re making money with the work of others. I think the least they could do should be to give a CD to every authors that are part of the collection. I don’t think it’s asking much, and it’s very fair to everyone. –
