This is a fun scenario. Basically, you are constantly bombarded with Cats and priests from the 3 CP players who have near unlimited resources. You must take the portal, which is OOZING with priests. This is a non-stop frantic game from the first ten minutes until finish. If you do not like priests, do not play this game. If you don't like heavy cats, don't play this game. You will be fighting both at the same time from start to finish. This is not a beginner game. The only way to win this game is to divide and conquer. Once you have eliminated the CP supporting players, you can go for the portal.Recommend experienced players play this on "hard" or "very hard" mode.Good Job.Rating: 6.5 of 10[Edited on 12/28/04 @ 12:03 PM]

Playability: 3.4
Playing in a modified DM style, Protect-n-Serve has plenty of action and is quite entertaining! Your opposition is attacking you steadily with priests and catapults, not to mention scythe chariots are in there aswell. While it doesn't take too much effort generally to defend your wonder (you have a ridiculously large stockpile of wood, stone and gold) the big tricky part is converting the portal... Rushing through right to it won't do it here-you'll get slaughtered halfway there. You have to get rid of at least one computer player first, and considering your starting position and units, you have a few interesting options. This all made it very fun and challenging. While overall it was mostly like a deathmatch, it had some different aspects that made the game a good fun challenge.
Balance: 3.4
The balance here was generally somewhat above average here, but there were a few issues. First of all, the brown player is so spread out that many buildings and units can be pecked off at ease, since the army is streched out across the bottom portion of the map. The second big issue was your resources... You begin with stockpiles of stone, wood, and gold in the tens of thousands. It balances out a bit, since you begin in the stone age with few villagers and not much food, but when you hit tool you can just surround yourself with towers, and as you hit bronze you can pump out as many siege weapons as you want-generally. You shouldn't run out of wood, even relying on chariots. The shortage of food actually does balance things out, limited the time spanning ages and amount of units trained, but the scenairo itself was uneedingly easy to progress through as long as you keep your wits about you. The rest of the scenairo is fairly well done, as the catapults and priests attack you steadily and give you things to worry about. Also, the end of the scenairo is very difficult... As getting rid of all the towers and walls without destroying the temple prove a challenge. Overall, this was above average.
Creativity: 3.7
The story is excellent and very creative (I'll let you find that one out) and the gameplay is somewhat creative-much like a deathmatch with some dandy VC's. Converting buildings for a victory is quite unique... You often don't see too much of this in the heavens. The big problem here was the map-a random one. It was modified a wee bit, but there wasn't a single creative thing about it... It was a standard random map. And of course, since this scenairo is nine years old, you won't see any special effects with eye candies or dynamics. I still found this to be qute creative.
Map Design: 2.5
This was nothing more than a random map. There were a few modifications, but nothing special. There were extra resources, a pleatu, and a awful waterfall. Nothing to see here.
Story/Instructions: 4.5
Wonderful, wonderful story. I'm not sure if this is original, but its quite good... The setting is quite unheard of. Anyhoo, it thoroughly explains what to do and how to go about doing it, and the only problems were an absent bitmap and lack of good hints... This author also could have explained the instructions just a tad more...
Additional Comments: Good scenairo, particulary for being so old. I'd say most certainly give it a go, particularly if your in the mood for a DM style match with some good tweaks.

Style: Build and Destroy + Victory Conditions
Map: Mostly land with some border water routes and minor lakes
Playability: 3
Some fun to be had with a semi-DM style game. Converting the temple can be tricky if using siege units. Couple of crashes when using multiple towers.
Balance: 3
You start with huge resources in the first age and must quickly advance upwards as the enemy is already in the position to send iron age units your way.
Creativity: 3
The story is unique in AoE circles, and is more a science fiction setting. The objective to convert the temple is quite good.
Map Design: 2
Map is quite plan, with the only feature a plateau.
Story/Instructions: 3
Interesting story but instructions need clarifying.
Additional Comments:
Decent scenario but nothing special. |
