The Cockleshell Heroes (ASO2)

Author File Description
grex
File Details
Number of Scenarios: 1
Difficulty: Mod-Hard
You are Hasler, a minor chief of the Isceni Briton tribe. Queen Boudicca commands you to select, train and equip a raiding party. You must travel in kayaks to destroy a Roman trading fleet located 75 miles upriver in the heart of Roman-occupied Gaul, then return home with a special cargo from Iberia. This one-scenario campaign is based on the true story of a daring raid by British Royal Marines in WWII, and is the second in my Ancient Special Operations (ASO)series, which morphs famous actual or fictional special ops from the 18th-20th centuries back into ancient times. See the movie, shown frequently on The History Channel. Campaign contains two custom .per and one custom .ai, plus intro map.

Great scenario. Original idea, you don't see many scenarios with rafts. Challenges players to think, it's not just kill the enemy. You will probably need to restart a couple times because sometimes if one thing goes wrong, it will be very hard to win. Clear instructions and a nicely done instruction bitmap add to the gameplay. Overall, this campaign is well thought out and worth a download.
Ingo van Thiel A very nice and challenging one-scenario campaign. You have a fragile fleet of rafts (cockleshells) to land your troops on an enemy island. If you survive the landing, you'll quest your way through a picturesque landscape. Lovely brooks and cisterns, narrow bridges and well-designed villages. But watch out: That beautiful scenery is rather treacherous. When you begin to feel at ease, something very nasty may hit you out of nowhere...You start off under pressure. Your government center is slowly getting destroyed, so you've got to decide which upgrades you want to take before it's too late. "The Cockleshell heroes" is one of the most strategical campaigns I've played so far. You can easily get crushed if you make a wrong decision or take the wrong way. You never know if your curiosity is going to be punished or rewarded. I won by being curious and saving often. One last hint to the player: protect what you find.

It's beatable, but I found I needed to save alot and also restart a bunch of times. It took me hours to beat, but that didn't make it especially bad.

Balance: 5
Good balance for me because when the person figures it out it isn't hard.

Creativity: 5
Creative idea of knocking out the harbor ships deep inland.

Map Design: 5
Good design.

I thought that the 1955 movie and WWII story were neat themselves, but I wasn't a big fan of reusing them in the guise of an ancient military operation.

Additional Comments:
A walkthough is good for people who get stuck so that they don't give up. I will start one.(Warning: SPOILERS)

You can Research from the beginning the three techs at your southern GC: 1. share exploration with allies, 2. have barracks take away only 1/2 the amount from population(I guess this tech is not very useful), 3. have buildings be built quicker. At the iron age, You can research Aristocracy to make centurions. And there are two more siege techs, which I found useful. As for initial search and discovery: There is a stone pile to the east of your base that you can get to by cutting through the woods. There is a raft in the far north corner. Also at the beginning, make fishingboats for food. It's not worth making galleys because they can't fit through your harbor opening.

If you bring your woodcutters across the river from their path from your base, you can make a pit and then dig through across the shore forest, where your soldiers could cross.

The Ark is in the far west corner. 3 Merchant ships seems to do the trick of getting alot of gold fast. I think you might as well ignore the tribute for Iberia because ltimately it looks like you have to fight them because they are guarding the ark so thick with troops that you can't get the ark out peacefully. And anyway, they seem to break their alliance with me no matter what I do about the time that I reach the ark by walking from the siege factory.

When you go in for your raft mission, it's best to hug the east shore of the Gironde to avoid the Mirror towers. The aqua flags on the Girande have a path that goes east to the siege factory where I can make a catapult. Your catapult can destroy the towers on the east edge of the Gironde. The second Blue government center, with a villager and gold, is in the far southwestern edge, a bit southeast of Iberia.
