The Holy Citadel

Author File Description
Jeff White
File Details
Difficulty: Hard
You go up against two opponents, one VERY well established and defended the other only minimally so. Lot's of resources are available to fund what will be a long naval siege-war with a LOT of losses on your part. Read the history and hints for more info. This was my first scenario, hopefully you will find it fun. Multiplayer also : No

Playability: 3
This is a long slow buildup punctuated by one walkover opponent and then going into the second phase against a very strongly fortified island. I found myself enjoying it for some reason. The buildup was relaxing and the eventual mass attack against the second opponent provided a change of pace.

Balance: 3
The first opponent is a walkover but the second opponent is so built up that it's really a challenge. I had 40 villies working, used up all the trees and all the gold on my continent and had to send villies to my newly conquered territory to use their trees and gold to build the size navy that was necessary to take out the fortress island. The second opponent has an insane number of priests. I lost 38 vessels to conversion. On the minus side, he has a dock but can't build any ships because he's way over his pop cap, and of course by the time I have remedied that problem for him, he can't match my ship production from my 16 docks with his single dock. So it isn't a naval battle so much as a naval siege, which is stated in the intro by the author.

Creativity: 3
The way the designer has shaped the fortress island showed lots of creativity.

Map Design: 3
At first the map looks just like a random map, which it is, except it's been severely tweaked. The bay on the fortress island is shaped so that when you attack it with your fleet, you invariably come into the radius of fire from about 10 towers. Other parts of the fortress, whether by design or by fortuitous accident, had towers lined up with overlapping fields of fire in such a way that I was unable to cross their T with any significant number of my ships. I had to attack the towers with 1 or 2 ships because any more would spread out and come under fire from an adjacent tower.

Story/Instructions: 3
History, instructions, hints, epilog. Brief but exactly pertinent.

Additional Comments:
After playing through the first phase I was thinking I would give less than a 2.0 rating to this scen. But after finishing it and examining each category for rating, they all rated a 3 with me so the overall score is 3. As Tanneur99 has said, when the final score of your own rating surprises you, you are becoming a good reviewer. (I hope). This is a really nice first scenario.
