The Germanic people have been overcrowded in their homeland and need more room to survive. Unfortuantly the only neighboring country is Rome. You have been elected to scout out, then lead an army into Roman territory and capture land for your people to live on. |

Added category for all contest campaigns: Historical Rating - 2 This campaign depicts one of the peroidic invasions of the Roman Empire by the barbarian tribes to the north. You play the part of the "German Invasion" Starting in the year 106 AD. In the first scenario, Which is strangely titled "ZX Rome 1" you have 6 scouts under your command. Your forces make up the advance group to a larger invasion. Your goal is to scout out 85% of the map. Battle is something to be avoided. The authors use of terrain is well thought out and his maps look very good throughout the campaign. One thing that was odd was the scouts start unloaded from transports on the southern point of the map. I would expect German invasion forces to come from the north. The map is spotted here and there with enemy troops that will attack on sight. This scenario won't give most people much trouble, I was able to finish on the first scout. The second scenario, "ZX Rome 2", is an attack centered on the Roman lands on and near the mountain of Dufourspite. The German must stockpile resources and destroy the Roman farms in the area. In addition, you need to grow to a population of 40 people. The gold needed to defend yourself and defeat the Romans is scattered on the mountain and defended by towers. Space for storage pits is limited on the mountain and the gold is spread out. You will have to plan out good places for these pits or take long walks. "ZX Rome 3" is the final chapter and it is "it is time to take out the capital of the Roman Province". I would have liked to have known, Which province?, What Capital? The introduction doesn't say. The map is divided from east to west by a river, which makes for some protection during the buildup for the attack. There are three computer players, Two of which are called, "Roman Township" and one named, "Roman city state". The objective is to destroy the goverment buildings and build a German Government Center in the Roman city state's town. I got quite a surprise when I saw the Roman city state's units attacking the Roman Township units and buildings! The Capital was soon in my hands and German rule expanded. I would guess this campaign's difficulty to be easy in the first scenario and moderate in the second and third. The introductions are passable but I would have liked to see some more historical information. The bit maps that accompany the introduction are are poor. The last two are downright ugly. The author didn't bother to trim the pasted images after importing them to the map. He apparently knows how because one map has a villager building a house on it that is trimmed correctly. The scenario names are something else that there is no excuse for. They should have real names and not be in computereese. The authors use of terrain features and elevation changes are above average. I particularly liked the twin wagon tracks coming into one of the towns in the first scenario. Things like the lack of flat terrain in the mountains and the way the river widens at it's mouth add to the games enjoyment and the looks. Overall, this author has some parts of scenario design down and with some work could bring his work up a notch. As submitted it's a mixed bag. |

Added category for all contest campaigns: Historical Rating - 2 Brief description of topic area: The attempts by the celts to stem the tide of the Roman advance. OVERALL SUMMARY/COMMENTS ON THE CAMPAIGN: Overall the campaign was reasonable with an interesting twist of being the un-Roman underdog. I liked the way you had to work for your Gold. Scenario 1 really let the campaign down it was just a scout mission! |

Playability: 5
It was very playable in that the instructions were clear enough and I could beat them on Moderate difficulty. I liked that it played smoothly without glitches - some other maps that I have been playing have glitches or are way too hard. So I think that the previous two reviewers underrated this campaign.
Balance: 4.5
I had to save alot to win in the 2nd and 3rd games, and I had to restart the second one once or twice because I wasn't ready for the enemy catapults coming into my base. I'm an average or just below average player I think. So it was easy enough with all the saving, but a bit hard if I were to save only a few times.
Creativity: 5
I thought that it was pretty creative because it played out the stages of the Germans' campaign. The idea of winning by exploring the map was neat for the first mission. The 2nd mission was alot of fun for me.
Map Design: 5
I liked the maps. They had natural decorations and natural "gates", so to speak where you had to pass through some narrow areas. Plus I liked the design of the Roman city in the third mission, because it used roads and lots of towers.
Story/Instructions: 3.7
My main criticism of this campaign is that the STORY section in the missions is practically blank and it just tells you to read the Story in the Victory screen. But the designers of AOE did not design the Victory screen to be for the Story, but rather for the Victory story, so to speak. The author should have given historical background in the story section or something like that.
Additional Comments:
Here is my Walkthrough for the Third mission:
First, you should start with making a market and build villagers and a temple. Then send some cavalry and archers in the yellow base in the far north and priests into the brown base in the far NE. You can explore with your scouts. Your main goal is to get gold at the beginning to advance to the Iron Age. Some is to the north of your base in the middle of the map.
For your next steps, take out the towers in the lower right with about five stonethrowers and mine for gold there, and upgrade your siege weapons' abilities using the archer, govt center, and wood market upgrades. Put cavalry and priests in the former Brown base and send cavalry and priests into the former yellow base. Then use your upgraded stonethrowers to take out red's towers and put sentry towers near its front gate.
