Julius Caesar landed in England twice, in 55 and 54 BC. Both times he landed at Deal in Kent, both times severe storms in the English Channel damaged his fleet, and both times the Britons tried to take advantage of Caesar's predicament. This resulted in several battles, truces, taking of hostages, and more battles. Caesar was preoccupied with on-going troubles in Gaul at the same time, which may explain why he did not mount any large-scale, long term campaigns in Britain. Scenario 1 deals with Caesar's predicament during the 55 BC expedition, fighting off the Britons while trying to rebuild his fleet of transports. Scenario 2 covers the first large battle of the second landing (54 BC). Scenario 3 covers the last battle, against Cassivellaunus and his allies, of the second landing. The scenarios get progressively more difficult, and I tried to design each scenario so that you could replay them and not have to take the same tactical approach every time to achieve the victory conditions.

Added category for all contest campaigns: Historical Rating - 4 Overall, this is a decent, very playable campaign. On the surface it looks like it's going to be easy, but in reality it turns out to be quite a challenging series of scenarios that combine fixed forces with build up and recruitment of gaian allies. However, nothing remarkably creative was done here -- just good, solid AoE editing, satisfying and replayable if you're not looking for any bells and whistles. Historically, Rich's treatment of Caesar's raids on England is accurate and so is the geography in his maps. His instructions are particularly lively. He takes a witty approach to his narrative without actually deviating from the factual history. It's a refreshing change from the ponderous, taking-yourself-too-seriously approach certain designers (like me) are prone to.

Added category for all contest campaigns: Historical Rating - 5 "The Britannia Expeditions" covers Rome's first attempts to control the British Islands. Things did not go smoothly for Caesar in Britannia, He was cursed by storms and constantly harrassed by the native tribes. The opening scenario, "The First Landing (55 BC)", takes place after one of these storms has wrecked a good deal of the Roman Fleet. Your objective seems simple enough, just build ten heavy transports to get the troops off the Island. This goal is complicated by the fact that you start with a fixed force which is exposed on the beach without the benefit of any fortifications. The enemy will send group after group of cavalry and chariots at you and will soon wear down your forces, so time is of the essence. The next scenario is called, "Second Landing-Part 1 (54 BC)", This scenario reenacts Caeser's landing the following year. This time you start with 50 units and must destroy the British Government Center without losing more than 35 men. There is a defended river crossing that must be passed on the way to the British city. The government center is defended by quite a few towers to make things even a little more difficult for you. The final scenario is named, "The Second Landing-Part 2 (54BC)". In this one you will be fighting a two front war. There are two enemy tribes and your goal is to destroy both of their town centers. You start in a small fort with a town center and dock of your own. Lose either, and the game is over. This was a fairly solid campaign, but one which didn't have anything really special in it to make it stand out. Everything was done satisfactory. The introductions were good, but the bit maps, while okay, looked a little plain. The authors written history was well done. It's clear that he did some studying on his subject. The play maps themselves made pretty good use of terrain and elevations were used in all three scenarios. In the first scenario the map has few trees in it by design so you are forced to move inland toward the British camp in search of lumber for your transports. This was well done. The British villages could have used some more detailing and all the terrain maps were a bit dull looking. The victory conditions are reasonable, the First scenario having the most creative goal. It was also the most interesting of the three scenarios for me.

Added category for all contest campaigns: Historical Rating - 4 Brief description of topic area: The three landing and campaigns of Julius Caesar in Britain. OVERALL SUMMARY/COMMENTS ON THE CAMPAIGN: Overall the campaign was good with plenty of pressure and micro troop management. I found that I had to play Scenario 1 and 2 about 4 times before I worked out how to win.
