Playability: 3.5
This scenario provided a seemingly endless siege with wave after wave of attackers breaching the walls, toppling the towers, and threatening the interior of the compound. You can play it in two different styles, I chose the slower one.
Balance: 3.5
The initial attacks last about an hour and are threatening enough to wipe out a lot of your initial starting forces and walls. Later things even out a bit. I mined all my stone, built as many towers as I could, and repelled all assaults endlessly but I still had my double walls breached in many spots and lost all my towers. Almost all my troops were killed off and I ended up with two companies of cavalry arch (my favorite unit), some priests to heal them, and a few villies to work resources and shore up walls and towers.
Creativity: 3
This is a seemingly very simple theme that has been repeated numerous times but the designer put in a few little extras that show he didn't just throw it together, he thought out how it would develop as the siege progressed.
Map Design: 3
A very basic setup with a lot of rectangular edges, but it functioned perfectly for the purpose of developing the scenario, and there were extra touches to spruce up the action.
Story/Instructions: 1
Zero, zip, nada, nichevo, keine.
Additional Comments:
Similar to some events we have followed in the news, I started with a major strategic blunder and had to bail myself out by infinite tactical effort, massive casualties, and endless expenditures of treasure. After the first hour of siege, the Achievements screen showed I had a 5 to 1 numerical advantage over both enemies combined. I assumed the enemy was being attrited at a steady rate and they would run out of resources and troops in another 30 minutes. Instead they recovered to full force, equal to mine, and prolonged the war indefinitely. If I had rushed at their lowest strength I could have ended the war quickly but I'm not a rusher, I'm a turtle. So a war that could have been ended in 90 minutes, instead lasted 6 1/2 hours! When it was over, 3,295 enemy troops lay dead on the field of battle (I lost 269 of my own). If you are a good rusher, learn from my example.
Recommended for a download if you are up for a massive siege. Don't worry, you won't have your perimeter overrun in the first 5 minutes like some sieges here in the Granary, this is more like a slow motion train collision.
