This is an attempt to create a set of challenging scenarios that trace the drama and the action of the great wars between Persia and Greece, in the 5th Century B.C. I have paid as much attention as I could to historical accuracy. There are, however, some anomalies in my philosophy of computer gaming which colored my approach to designing. Truth be told, I'm more of a turn-based gamer than a real time gamer. Consequently, my scenarios (I think) play more like turn-based games. For the most part, you will not find yourself under constant, direct attack. Instead, you'll have significant "breathing spaces" to plan your next move. But your move, once you initiate it, will bring your enemies down on your head! At least, that's what I'm TRYING to accomplish -- any and all feedback on these initial three scenarios will be much appreciated!! My long-range plan is a total of nine scenarios: three dealing with Darius' attack on the Greek mainland, and three for his son, Xerxes', all-out effort to subjugate Greece once and for all. I hope you have fun. If I did my job right, though, you should be cursing a blue streak at some of the problems I've tried to create for you! Updated 1998/02/25 Here's an amended campaign file. I just replayed the 3rd scenario and it worked ok. (You should get a win when Mor Havoc reaches the Greek Chorus) |

I could really waffle on for hours about how good these scenarios are. You could do a school project on the history you will learn just playing them. The author's instructions are poetic and his maps are absolutely spot on. He manages to use AOE to deliver what happened in actual history. The balance is good although the scenarios can be tough. Ensemble should include the entire Persian Wars campaigns in the Xpack! |

This is the first unoficial campaign I play and I must say I did like it quite a lot. After reading the comments, I have nothing but respect for the person who did this work. It trully is worth playing and very enjoyable. I didn't get bored or anything, and yes,I did enjoy the story and had a good time. So much that I intend to play all of the other campaigns from this series.
Now, in order to avoid repeating what other people said, I think I can offer some criticism as well... Hopefully, a constructive and useful one.
I did not like the aesthetics of the stages. They look way too simple for my taste. I read we should take into consideration how old the campaign actually is, but still, they're pretty simple. Also, I did not like that I was killed like a hundred times. Some people did, so it's subjective, I guess. I also found very difficult to build a storage pit in the second stage, and I didn't see a reason for such an extended uneven floor that didn't allow me to build anything where I needed it. Perhaps it's for historical reasons? I don't know... The last stage was, perhaps, the hardest, and I was loading every second, but..., the ending was amazing. Very rewarding! Nevertheless, there was a strange error: Right when I got the priest to his destination, it said that I had lost. It happened several times. That wasn't a problem, tho, because I saved a couple seconds ago, so I took a turn and entered from another angle and it worked. Just out of curiosity, I kept loading and trying, and sometimes it kept saying that I had lost. I have no idea why that happened.
I think the main strenght of this campaign is the story, the narration and the rush you get for being killed so often. Somehow it makes you keep trying, and yes. I played it with the idea that I was also going to learn a little bit from history and this campaign gave me just that.
This was my first experience playing a fan campaign, so I don't have anything else to compare it with but the official campaigns that come with the game. I'd say this one is more "brutal", it is very interesting and it probably is better than some of the official ones. |
