I start with 3 villies and a Town Center in the Stone Age, a familiar though not enticing beginning. The map is drawn in almost perfect rectangles, the lake looks like an Olympic swimming pool. The scen might offer some play value because of the creative victory conditions but I did not wish to spend all the time required working my way up from the Stone Age to find out.

Well it always pays to be suspect of game instructions. If you had believed what these instructions said, you would deliberately refrain from researching past Watch Tower because you have to build Watch Towers to win. You would diligently chop your way through a bunch of trees to get to the flags where you have to build your Watch Towers to win. But if you (or the designer) just spent 32 seconds trying out what happens when you just annihilate the opponents, you would discover that the conditions are broken and the instructions are wrong. You can win by defeating all the opponents without building any Watch Towers. Which tells us that the designer has gone straight from the Design phase to Production phase, skipping the testing phase in order to present us, the customers, with an unfinished "finished product".
