skald When Age of Empires came out it satisfied the need for a scenario editor that let budding designers bring their own ideas to fruition. Every designer used the editor to create their favorite battle even if it meant cavemen landing on Normandy Beach or catapults in the streets of Seattle in the 20th century. Now that there are accurate PC games recreating the Civil War and just about every other conflict you can wish for, these anachronistic scens are less useful. But this is an early attempt to recreate the Civil War. The map of the US is nice, and Hawaii is especially cute. Unfortunately it starts out with just a TC and no villies, in the Stone Age. No buildings, no military units. The South building a Wonder is actually appropriate because if they could remain in secession for that many years, surely they would have won anyway. I didn't actually play this one out, just sampled it.

Civil War

Playability: 2. Start with TC, no villies, lots of resources already stockpiled. South is entirely walled off.
Could be a long war but... since the text says the designer's sister created this map in two minutes, I did not feel compelled to invest a lot of time in it, and since the designer left the victory conditions to Standard, I simply skipped gathering any resources and went straight through the ages to Iron, built a Wonder and surrounded it with a forest of towers, and won without crossing the Mason Dixon Line.

Balance: 2. As balanced as a random map.

Creativity: 3. An attempt to recreate the Civil War in North America. Good idea.

Map: 3. I can't believe this was created in 2 minutes. It's not really detailed but the outlines are there and there are some geographical features in the right places.

Story : 1. Because I can't give a zero. There is nothing in any of the categories here.

Comments: The text says "4-player only" but I was surprised and pleased to see that my computer ally, even crippled by the strat/per of Random/Random, usually fatal, actually helped out a lot.
The Achievements screen in this scen is blank for some reason.
