After the end of the Persian Wars, the cities of Greece regained their strength and strived to become the leading forces of culture and wealth in the Eastern Mediterranean. Trade flourished in the Aegean, great works of art were created and the city states of Athens and Sparta vied for power and control of the Hellenic world. Under the guidance of prominent men like Cimon, Pericles, Lysander, Agesilaus and others, the Greeks ascended to greatness, but inevitably, due to their hubris and imperial ambitions, descended to bitter infighting and civil strife. Other illustrious men needed to appear, from the north and the Kingdom of Macedon, Philip II and his son Alexander, to unite the Greeks and launch them to their apogee with the invasion and conquest of the Persian Empire, that brought Hellenic culture to the ends of the earth.
In this continuation of the 'Dawn of Hellas' campaign, witness the Golden Age of Pericles and the formation of the Delian League that Athens used to expand its influence and maritime power in the Hellenic world, the Peloponnesian War and the rest of the civil conflicts that ultimately gave Macedon the opportunity to exert its might over the rest of Greece after the military triumphs of Philip II, and the epic campaign of Alexander the Great, who thanks to his strategic brilliance, defeated Darius, brought the whole of the Persian Empire to its knees, and led the Greeks from Europe to the icy peaks of the Hindu-Kush and the lush rainforests of India.
Expect action-packed missions with skirmishes on land and sea spanning across the Greek world and beyond, Build-and-Destroy scenarios along with pitched battles of Alexander against his many opponents -barbarian tribes, treacherous Greeks, Darius and the might of Persia, Scythian nomads, Porus and his Indian elephants- and many hours of conquest. Don't forget to always read the Hints section as some Victory and Loss Conditions are contained therein. As usual, the old Scenario Instructions maps are included for reference. Enjoy the perilous world of Ancient Greece!
~ The campaign title is taken from a passage of Pericles' Funeral Oration from 'The History of the Peloponnesian War' (Book 2.34-46), written by Thucydides ~
