The next (and sadly final) version of the Age of Italy mod is finally ready.
This version is pretty much complete on the data changes, save for some balancing. But on the graphical side a lot more was intended. Deathmatch games are fully functional, random map is not (no AI files).
On this page, click on the download file button, you then download the zip file and extract it. And yes, it is most certainly a zip file, aoeh graary only accepts zip files

The folder is the zip file, I know. But the txt file will not open. I'm guessing because it was saved on your PC (I'm probably wrong). That is the main problem. Could you just tell the link please so I can go to it and download the file because the only file I get in the folder in the txt file.

Nobody else has that problem, and I can open the file just fine (different pc than the one it was created on).
Anyway, -link removed-
I will remove the link from this comment once you downloaded it. If you have more issues with the mod, PM me on thompsoncs @ live.nl. Have fun

Well, the scale of the changes are huge. This goes beyond changing the names of buildings and so on. The technology tree system is completely different and everything is clearly geared towards the history of Rome. This really is the only total conversion mod for Age of Empires (at the time of writing).
This is a cancelled mod but the huge amount of changes still make this mod playable. Despite not having changes to the graphics, there has been graphical changes to the interface (such as new icons for units, technologies).
The game plays at a different pace to the original Age of Empires. You can create larger armies due to differences in the way population is calculated. The technology trees are also larger per age, meaning that it is feasible that you spend longer in each age.
As already mentioned, the changes are geared towards the history of Rome. I would recommend checking this mod out if you love Age of Empires and the history of Rome.
Additional Comments:
Being an incomplete mod does mean that there are limitations but overall the mod is playable and so very different from the original game.
The only reason I didn't give full marks in the review is that firstly the tech tree should need more explanation (i.e. it would be nice having a tech tree diagram for each civ because it is so different from the main game) and secondly the installation process doesn't appear to work well on later operating systems.
Even though the installation may cause problems, you can manually update your Age of Empires by copying over a handful of files.
