The Source of Water

Author File Description
File Details
Difficulty: Easy-Mod
I'm working up the difficulty ladder as I get back in to the swing of things. Another easy scenario, but I'd like a review for this one by someone.

Anyone wanna write a review when they get some time?

The Dark Archer
Map Design3.0
The Source of Water is a short and rather easy scenario from Axoren which is unfortunately plagued by a couple of problems making it a lot easier then it really should be.

Playability: 2
Unfortunately this simple scenario has a few bugs and flaws that ruined the playability. The victory conditions are made redundant by the fact that conquest victory appears to sill be set to one while on of the victory is set to destroy your one and only opponent. Further more that task is made greatly easier by the villagers that upon finding my base with their one explorer got stuck in trees trying to mine my gold. Also for a group of men that whose leader died of thirst they sure lasted a long time. This score would be greatly enhanced with making access to the players base easier as well as possibly removing the destroy player victory condition in favor of some sort of timer.

Balance: 2
The balance of this scenario has been ruined mainly by the red villagers getting stuck in trees trying to get to my area. This hold up seems to have caused a complete freeze up in the computers strategy as I was never harassed giving me plenty of time to build up a small force and take over. To improve the balance of this scenario fixing the playability and issue with the villagers will make a great improvement.

Creativity: 2
The map design shows some creativity as does the little story there is but unfortunately the Build and Destroy style and victory condition took the score down as well. I did however like the effect of the freshly dead leader fallen before your starting group.

Map Design: 3
The map shows that Axoren has a lot of potential to become a great designer although I bigger map would be nice. The grass clumps covering the ground look good but really should be mixed desert patches. The mixing of gold and stone mines is a nice effect however. Of course there are a few problems around the place the first being the rather repetitive overlapping pine forest. This could be improved by rendering the forest by hand or at least by not using an overlapping and mixing pine with normal forest.

Story/Instructions: 2
A short back story is provided in the history section as well loss and victory messages along with a couple of hints. Nothing fantastic or overly exciting here. Improvement would be made just by writing more of a story in general and a bitmap often can help.

Additional Comments:
The map size is a bit too small too get any big or prolonged battle are going difficult to get going. For better, although harder to make, scenarios I'd recommend upping the size a notch or two.

Should I download:
It really depends on what you want to do. If you want to play a challenging game of AoE or RoR then no but if you just want to take a look at some of the nice design then it is worth a shot.
