The Three european empires in the early middle ages were the Byzantine empire (Greece and Asia Minor), The Frankish empire (Now France, northern Italy, Switzerland and western Germany) and Bulgaria (The Balkan Peninsula, Hungary, Ukraine and Slovakia). This campaign is the first from the four campaigns I plan for the history of Bulgaria. Read carefully the scenario instructions and the hints. All comments are welcome here or on my e-mail. I hope you like it.

Playability: 3
I had a good time playing this campaign as it had some good action throughout. This fixed force B/S was well put together and I found no faults in the actual game play itself. There was a good use of resource placement so you had to work for it and use it wisely. Keep in mind also that you can easily be defeated if you make a wrong move as in scenario 2 you can have an important person overrun then killed.
Balance: 3
I enjoyed the balance in this small campaign. Taking my skill level into consideration this was not too easy and not too hard. So middle of the road. In one scenario your allies do not aide you but just go about their own business. They actually stand in the middle of a battle yet do nothing. Another scenario your enemies do not attack you even when you enter their city. Once you start to assault they decide to take a stand and fight back
Creativity: 4
I liked the creativity in this campaign especially the opening of the third scenario as it was in my opinion well thought out. The designer had a goal he wanted to achieve and I think he did so quite well. From the opening of each scenario with its well placed bitmaps right into the actual map design itself. I had to look up the history of Bulgaria just to get the feel for it and was not surprised to find that our designer did his homework. Each scenario seemed to fit together nicely to make a well designed campaign. Although I would have like to see a language file to compliment the actual player there was none.
Map Design: 4.2
These were the one of the best parts of the campaign. Simple yet very well organized maps. Free of useless clutter and also a nice touch when placing it all together. Rolling hills small mountains and rivers makes the whole layout look semi real. I liked the use of different trees to represent forest and the small trails that wound through the landscape. Again if I can mention the bitmaps they were nicely thought out also. Our designer has a very good eye for map design that can only get better.
Story/Instructions: 3.5
Although there were some spelling error I got the feeling that English is our designers second language. That said the history was accurate the storyline was interesting and made you want to read it out of interest rather that finding out what you had to do to win. Each scenario instruction was also clear and to the point. I looked at the hints after each scenario was finished and found that if need they would have been very useful.
Additional Comments:
I hope to see more of this designers wok as he is very talented from what I have played today. This is a definite download for anyone looking for an interesting campaign to play With what is offered in the Granary and what our designer already knows we will only see great things to come. A job well done! Pallintides |

Thanks for the review, pallintides but can you tell me what needs to be improved. I receive average scores for "a job well done". I don't want a higher rating, I just want to know what needs to be improved.[Edited on 07/25/07 @ 09:28 AM]

First off I don’t think a 3.5, 4, or a 4.2 are average scores. The final score in my opinion is above average. Pleas don’t go by what the review score dictate as they say 3 is average when it is not. Some one should really reevaluate those scores. Even the final score was not average in my humble opinion. If you want notes on what you should or could improve I am happy to oblige. Keep in mind that you map design skills are great so no issues there. I gave no marks for spelling or grammar as I know English is not your native tongue. The only issue I felt was that it could have used a language file to let us know who was who. With that said:
Scenario 1: Nothing major, but your allies (red) do not aide you but just go about their own business. As said before they stand in the middle of a battle yet do nothing, If they are of no use keep them away.
Scenario 2: This is where a different Language file could have been useful as I believe it was Kormisosh that was left as a Cataphract and in doing so was ignored until he was killed and I was defeated. This happened once then I got smart. Once the actions of your enemies abated you are left alone. Again nothing major.
Scenario 3: This was where I felt it could have been more interesting. The opening was great then it sort of petered off You were left virtually alone to go about gathering and massing an army to take the cities needed for victory. Once I was ready to attack I just rolled on through with Cats and mass calvary. As I was destroying the yellow city they stood inside as I pounded away outside
I was not confronted until I actually entered the city and was met by comp bowmen and calvary. Their leader hid in the mountain pass and offered no resistance when confronted and killed. The final red city was the same but as the Phalanx advanced I had two priests convert them.
So as you can see I had some issues but not much. All in all it was a very good campaign and I know you will only get better. Keep up the good work. Pallintides

I know the gameplay in this campaign is average I just wanted to know the good and the bad points of the campaign. And I'm happy that you're interested in the Bulgarian history! |

Please go back and reread my review and second comment as you seem to have misread it. I did not lower the review standards to my liking I said they were wrong in my opinion and should be re-evaluated. If you are going on a point system from 1-5 then yes 3 is average. Unfortunately we are not as we have added .5, .6 and so forth. That makes 2.5 average as it is middle of the road. In the future I would suggest reading and if necessary rereading any persons reviews or comments to ensure you get the full meaning.[Edited on 08/01/07 @ 02:23 PM]

The first scenario is very stupid. I've done all tasks but didn't win. I hate this: lots of small objectives that I have to do. This compaign is a fill rubbish! |
