This is the first part of my Alex' Story series. The first mission is included. I put this one in RoR and not in AoE where I accidentally put the first part.
Alex has finally reached the mountain after a perilous journey through the forest and now has to cross the mountain in order to reach and save Faleni from the cruel Travilsanains.
Please give any advice you have, comment on it, rate it, because I need all help I can get to perfect my designing skills. thanks! |

Why not just update the original file then? If you included the first mission the original download is basically obsolete now. |

Well I just can't wait to publicize my missions, so I present them one by one until I finish the whole campaign. You're right , I seems a bit weird, but I just want to see how people think about my missions because I put so much efford in it and want my "reward", that is, comments and reviews, right away. |

Blizzardius,
I found some problems in both your scenarios. In the first one, it's where you need to use the enemy catapult to destroy trees. At one point, Alexander gets too close to the catapult, hindering its ability to fire, thus you can't continue.
In the second, it's in the instructions. You never mentioned what the player had to do in order to win. Also, the huge of amount tricks you used in it makes the scenario a little confusing.[Edited on 12/21/05 @ 09:51 PM]

yes, that's true- LittleFreak already informed me about that- I have sent him a refinmed version to show him what happens after the catapult. When I tested the map, I got past it, though-a bit strange. I think I'll re-submit it with some adjustments.
And about the second map; It's true but I didnt notice it. I forgot to add it. The goal(although you can't go anywhere else so it's kinda selfexplanitory) is to reach the other side of the mountain and this is repreented by
the small piece of land in the upper-right corner. It can be reached with the transport ship you get when you reach the foothills, but not until you finish the whole map and thus gain control of a cataput that can cut the trees that block the piece of land. Maybe I'll re-submit htis one too. |

Ok. I look forward to playing the update.
If it's possible, you should try taking out some of the tricks that aren't needed and maybe add some more grass clumps and desert terrain. With water, mixing tiny bits of plain and deep water makes a vast improvement. Just a suggestion of course. :-)[Edited on 12/11/05 @ 07:50 PM]

First Scenario
Playability: 2.2
After finishing the scenario, I found a few things did not work properly. First, the obvious is the enemy catapult. Another, where the injured rider is and supposed to kill your BLP if you attack the wall, well, the rider is killed by the two towers, one of the stealth archers is not locked down with an invisible tree properly. Sometimes, paths are too well hidden, and I couldn't find the gaia villagers. Also, the instructions say you'll lose if Alexander or the BLP die. They did die and I didn't lose.
Balance: 2.5
This scenario is a bit too easy. Since Alexander has so many hit points and such a high attack, you'll rarely need to go back and heal. The tricks are interesting, but some are too tedious and don't add much challenge.
Creativity: 3.5
For being a person's first campaign, it's quite interesting and good compared to some others. Tricks such as catapult destroying trees for your units or an invisible wall or having to use a transport to get through one are pretty good. The mad old men were a bit funny to see all these old guys gather around someone armed with a powerful sword. It seems that you've read on how to manipulate units like those a little. The only thing is that it's not good to use so many tricks for no real reason. Try to use ones only good for the setting you're in.
Map Design: 2.2
Well, as everyone keeps saying over and over, the map design is a little bland. There were two things that were ok though. One was the mountain itself. It's nice to add in a little elevation and cliffs to the map once in a while. The aqueduct is rather clever, though a few trees on the cliffs would make the trip up it more enjoyable.
Some not so good things were your forests and paths. Instead of using all one brush type for example, 'Forest', you can use a smaller sized brush and mix in all three types.
(Palm desert/jungle, pine forest, and forest all together. I recommend palm desert as opposed to jungle because it can add some desert tile to the terrain.)
For your paths, you can run a tiny brush strip through the middle and maybe put some desert patches or grass clumps to make it look like the grass was worn down.
Story/Instructions: 3.7
The story is much, much better than quite a few here, considering it isn't just two lines. The instructions itself are pretty clear and easy to comprehend. The hints are kind of difficult to read, but spacing in between each should take care of that. No bitmap and almost no spelling/grammar errors in the story.
Second Scenario
Playability: 2.7
For the most part, everything worked okay. Sometimes the mercenaries surrounded me too quickly and I couldn't get to the raft. One other was the elephants and stealth archers. The archers killed the elephants and left Alexander to take much damage. Also, why did the player have to hack down some ten or more fortifications to get to the gaia government center? I know writing can help you win but why so many?
Balance: 2.7
Although both scenarios were rather easy, this on posed more of a challenge. Some small fights could have you think of what units to use, how to fight, and what to avoid. Other than that, it's kind of just follow the path and kill enemies along the way.
Creativity: 2.8
I'd have to say the enormous amount of tricks can hurt not only gameplay if not used carefully, but also creativity. Using tons of tricks for no reason except to look fancy will not help. It can get very annoying seeing complicated trick after complicated trick mixed in with poor map design or having no real use. Having only one simple victory condition, take object to area, does not add much. I've also noticed you've forgotten to give the computer players names.
Map Design: 2.3
I can't really say the area around the mountain was too exciting. A few gaia trees and grass/desert patches can go a long way. The mountain was slightly better. The cliffs and desert made the terrain seem more realistic, partly because of the items randomly laid down by the brush. The narrow paths of the mountain and varying speeds of the unit you collected with the transport make it a pain to navigate. Also for your forests, don't forget to mix brushes and maybe leave some gaps once in a while.
Story/Instructions: 2.6
The story is fine with minimal spelling errors and is more than just a handful of sentences, helping the score. The main thing that really hurt the score here was the missing instructions, and just going into the hints. In the comments where you said the objectives were self-explanatory, it really isn't. With tons of victory conditions and combinations, one can't assume you need to take a unit to a small, hidden area on the map. About the hints. They were difficult to understand because of two things. One was that they are too close together and second was that they were a little too vague for me to fully comprehend.
Total: 2.7
Additional Comments:
If you ever do get around to completing the campaign, be sure to take care of some of the problems stated in the review.
