This is my first walk through the world of fantasy design for Age of Empires. When I started doing this campaign, I knew that to make it great it had to be three things: unique, diverse, and epic. I wanted something large in scope, with a big number of scenarios. I think that the final version will do all of these well. Dar-Sarvastus: Wizard of Death will contain around ten scenarios, plus a prologue (included in the demo) and an epilogue. The scenarios will run the gamut, featuring Build and Destroy, Fixed Force, Quest *and* puzzle elements over a tapestry of (I hope) beautiful, lush, and varying maps (a few places that your adventures will take you: The seacoast, a forest, the mountains, a desert, the steppes, a jungle (maybe), and an enormous city (also maybe). What makes this campaign unique from almost all others is that you don't play the outnumbered good guy. Your character is the dark lord Dar-Sarvastus, slain in body by a hated alliance of dwarves, elves, and men, preserving himself through the deepest elemental magics, and sworn to rise again to do what he at first couldn't: conquer the world. Throughout the campaign history sections detail the history and customs of the lands and new characters introduced in the story. Please download the first two scenarios and, if you wish, email me at Viruswatchdog4@yahoo.com with your feedback. If not, Merry Christmas (or whatever), and keep on playing this great game! |

Despite being only a demo, this campaign is quite brilliant, and I would rank it up there with the best.
Playability: 5
Taking the form of a priest, you, Dar-Sarvastus, must brainwash the local village into helping you. They put up a good resistance, and it takes a bit of strategy and luck to win. The first mission is a neat cutscene , the second being a playable B&D mission. I enjoyed the campaign a lot.
Balance: 5
The mission was tough, but beatable. It’s a shame there weren’t anymore. You start by taking over the body of an old man, and then you must push your intentions into the minds of other to help you. Since you have used all your energy in taking on a spirit form and then assuming human form again, you cannot die a second time. Therefore protecting the priest is essential. But you also need to compete for resources after that, and use diplomacy to win both land and sea battles.
Creativity: 5
The story is very “Lord of the Ringsy”, with many similarities, but once you look past that it still is its own tale, and has a lot of thought put into it. The objectives were varied and map was very creative, including nice use of bones on the harbours.
Map Design: 4.5
The map was really beautiful, and creative. It also suited the setting, and made the story real. Only problems were that the enemies weren’t able to fight well due to some crammed areas in their base. Also, the harbours were creative, but the bones should have been denser.
Story: 5
Beautiful bitmap, beautifully written story, and very entertaining. Although the story is unfinished, it’s very promising. I love the way you play as the bad guy as well.
Overall: 4.9
This is a wonderful fantasy campaign, despite its only shortcoming: Being incomplete. I’m sure the finished version would go down as the best fantasy campaign since Budonian Tales if it were completed.
