The Vanguard

Author File Description
Toonram
File Details
Difficulty: Mod-Hard
The Eagle Empire has thrived under the rule of its military hero and Imperator Aaron Slay. Now the Empire needs more lands and the Emperor and the Council have decided to explore new uncharted areas and unify barbarous tribes. The Empire is expanding, new settlers are pushing at the borders and the Emperor must venture into the uncharted areas where the ferocious Ravens roam. Aaron tried to send emissaries and make the Ravens understand that it would be best for everybody to join the Empire and trade with its clans and tribes. He has even sent an armada to besiege the capital of the Ravens whose people refuse to join the Empire and evolve. Indeed the Ravens do more than just refuse the alliance ; they automatically kill any messengers sent by the Emperor. Not a single one of them has come back.In order to curb the threat, Aaron Slay regularly dispatched several bands of warriors into the uncharted territories. And yet even they seem to be stuck. Adrenaline-boosted crocodiles, lions, wild elephants and murderous Ravens keep them at bay.The Emperor has no other choice left but to find them and regroup them all under his banner as he wishes to progress through the rough lands and reach his mighty fleet for the final assault against the unmerciful enemy. It is thus that a small party led by the Emperor lands on the unknown shore... only to realize that they landed right into a small settlement where two tribes are raging war against each other...**************************************************************'The Vanguard' was created a few years ago but I never took the time to upload it. Now I've redesigned it and added the new Bitmap introduction map.It actually is the last part of a 5-part campaign called 'IMPERATOR'(check out 'Temple of the Vile', 'The Maze', 'The Evil Three' and 'Total War' scenarii to get the full plot). The work is best on this one and this is why I'm only uploading one scenario and not the whole campaign. Still if you guys are interested in the story of Aaron Slay, let me know and I'll upload the lot!

This is a superior fixed force scenario! It's fun and I couldn't stop playing until I discovered that I couldn't win because of a bug. Anyway, I liked it a lot and I am curious of the campaign which the author said this scenario would be part of. I know that it's not very probable that now (maybe years after he designed this scenario) the campaign will still be released. Maybe it has already been released - I will keep my eyes on it.

Balance: 5
This is why this scenario is so nice. The balance is just perfect. Whereever you go - trouble is awaiting you. I had really hard times and I loaded a twice but this is just how I like it! It's never unfair or impossible. You just have to take the right tactics, move slowly and try to take any help and any advantage you can get. Be aware of tough towers as well as animals, draining little forces and friendly fire!

Creativity: 3.5
Well, I don't really know which victory condition(s) were ment to be fulfilled. So I can't give you too high scores here. The scenario itself is quite creative. Although being one of a thousand fixed force style scenarios it holds something unique. You get the feeling of really playing something the designer puts loads of work into. I liked it.

Map Design: 3.5
Nice done. Of course there could be much improvement the map is done with patience and every little square has some use. Most forests were done with brushbut they are mixed in a nice way and they are not clumped together but look somehow more open. The cities were also good. Not as lovely as many of our new designers do them but still they look good. Finally the designer made good use of elevations, cliffs, water and forest. You won't reach an area you're not ment to reach by now. Nevertheless you can sometimes chose between one or the other path. That's nice.

Story/Instructions: 4
As some might know story is a very important point for me. And this one is awesome. Although you don't get it all (because this scenario is taken out of a campaign) you are involved in it. It's always a pleasure to see people writing excellent stories :) The bitmap was also well done. And finally: The hints are quite good. I nearly gave up hope for some nice hints but here you do get help. So why don't I give 5 points? Well, the designer didn't point out what to do. At first I thought I had to bring Ceasar to th fleet. But this isn't it. Then I thought I had to destroy the red player. But this, too isn't it. Probably the author simply forgot to activate victory conditions ;)

Additional Comments:
download recommendation: Yes! Take your time and enjoy a great piece of design work. I'm looking forward on playing the whole campaign.
