In 480 B.C. Xerxes of Persia crossed the Hellespont and invaded Greece. His massive army had to pass thru a narrow pass between mountains and sea at a place called Thermopylae, also known as Gates of Fire, Hells Gate, and Firey Gates because of a hot springs located there. To pass into Greece to attack Athens, you must first overcome the 300 Spartans under Leonidas, and his allies, who have reached the pass before you and stand in your way. They will not surrender or retreat, you must slay them to the last man. Multiplayer also : ; ; ; No
Gates of Fire is an historical campaign that is very creative, but too easy.
Playability: 3
Although the scenario is easy to play and fun, it hasn’t the length or variation to back it up.
Balance: 2
The balance is pretty poor. You are supposed to outnumber them hugely, yet you don’t. But it’s still easy to win, since you can use tactics easily. There is nothing more than conquest to the campaign, and the instructions don’t need to be followed. It’s easy and short, and should have been very different in objectives (and map design layout)
Creativity: 4
Very creative in terms of map and story, and it has some good objectives too, only they need not be followed, and the map doesn’t depict the scenario as it should.
Map Design: 4.5
A great effort, the way the groups were organized with the infantry at the front and cavalry flanking and archers at the rear was class, and the sand dunes/terrain cracks thing was very cool, and creative.
Story/Instructions: 5
Great bitmap and story. It’s the same for anything DarkStar submits.
