Playability: 3
The Illiad depicts none other than the siege of Troy---you can choose between either the Greek aggressors or the defending Trojans. Either way, you're just going to be throwing vast amounts of axemen and other tool age units at the enemy until it tears down. Playing as the Trojans is a bit more fun, as it's a bit more easy to plan out your strategy, and you have a few options available. With the other Greeks, it isn't quite as fun. Tearing down a massive city with tool age units while they pummel you with stone throwers and towers just isn't fun after awhile. Overall this was a well-developed scenario that was fun enough to play once on each side.
Balance: 2.5
With the Trojans it's a bit too easy---the Greeks only have so many villagers and fishing boats, and once you kill them all the game will be over once their resource stockpile runs out. With the Greeks, it's too difficult. Your adversaries seem to be allowed to Bronze, so you're attacking a city with tool age units while stone throwers blast you to bits. It's more of a time thing---although it gets very difficult FAST once they start attacking you with siegery. Overall, it sags a bit below average, not quite giving a full challenge on either side in the right way.
Creativity: 3.6
The victory conditions and story are very interesting and different and make the scenario worth playing. Using regular units as "characters" on both sides is an interesting touch, and being able to play as two players is always a unique experience. There was plenty of things in here that I seldom see in other scenarios.
Map Design: 3.4
The Greek fortress looks very nice with the dead tree/stump palisides surrounding it, and the Trojan fortress is very neat and tidy, looks proper. Much of the map is fairly bland, but it's not really a part of the game. The parts of the map I played on were a slight cut above average for most old scenarios.
Story/Instructions: 4.7
While I have seen SLGIGHTLY better, this was still far above excellent and very much made the game. The instructions, hints, history, and bitmap are all put very well and give you a great impression of the game. However, I would have very much liked to see more of a development on the story---although I'm going to have to say the history made up for it.
Additional Comments: Certainly worth a play, you shouldn't be too dissapointed. While the gameplay is a bit off, the storyline gives you a very good impression of the scenario and makes it feel like it's worth playing.
I would suggest experienced players to try playing as player 2 (greeks)... I'm not sure if it's doable, but you'll have fun figuring it out.[Edited on 08/30/08 @ 09:26 PM]
