Hail Thor! This campaign is based on the history of Vikings. You'll start with your bare hands and hopefully you'll find yourself end up as a Viking king. The campaign consists of five scenarios that utilizes a few AI files. To play the campaign you must copy the AI files to DATA directory of Age Of Empire. You must also copy the CPN file to the CAMPAIGN directory. These file actions will not overwrite any of AOEs files. Youre welcome to comment this campaign by sending an email to: thomas.rosen@swipnet.se |

I was planning on playing this through to post a review. But I didn't. So here's my comment:
Scen 1: Stone Age, no resources. Lone axeman. Nice. Take out an enemy boss on a fortified enemy island with towers and lots of troops. Two ways to play this: smart, highly technical, precision insertion of troops. Or: sneaky, patiently, underhanded, using transport ship in unfair way. Guess which way I chose. Your mileage may vary.
Scen 2: OK, now I own the island (although most of the guard towers have disappeared with no explanation) and I have to take out the troops back on the mainland. Wiped them out with an axeman swarm. Strangely satisfying in a Vikish way.
Scen 3: OK, I need to take my troops to an enemy base, grab the artifact, and take it back home. I move my transport with my troops to the enemy shore. I park my transport onshore awaiting my troops. My troops move in to make contact. But something is going wrong. My transport is moving under its own will in a Northeast direction, leaving my troops abandoned on the beach. I move my transport back to the insertion point. It sails away. I do this 10 times. I can't make my transport stay on station to save my troops. I let the transport go where it wills. It parks itself far to the Northeast against a cliff. I restart the game. The same thing happens. I cannot save my troops after their skirmish because my transport leaves under its own volition for a meaningless point far away from the battle. Surely this is a consequence of the AI or PER, a plain AoE transport would never abandon its crew to the enemy.
Scen 4: You have lost the toss. You will start in the Tool Age with exactly one Jason, one priest, 2 bowmen, 3 villies, no buildings, minimal resources, against four built up, teched up enemies all allied with each other against you. At this point one wonders, what the heck does this have to do with Vikings?????
Scen 5: Same as above. What does this have to do with Vikings? Where are the Viking ships? Where are the raids on little towns? Why is this a total land map? If this is the final Viking war then why isn't it the Norman Conquest?
Overall: Recommended for download: Scen 1. See if you can take out the enemy island with minimal troops. The sneakier you are, the better. Fun. [Edited on 10/08/08 @ 12:29 AM]

Playability: 4
Balance: 4
(easy, easy, need to cheat, hard, N/A)
Creativity: 4
(OK, OK, wow, great, blah/a)
Map Design: 4
(OK, OK, good, good, N/A)
Story/Instructions: 4
(Takes a theme and works it properly.)
Additional Comments:
Scenarios 1&2 are pretty simple, Tool Age scenarios. They involve a bit of effort, but they are completely consistent with the theme of the campaign.
Scenario 3 is a gem. You will need to cheat to play this one (reveal map, no fog) in order to develop a plan, but this is a puzzle scenario. There are 2 major plans, one of which was probably not intended.
Scenario 4 is playable, but you will have to fight hard. However, it has nothing to do with the theme of the campaign.
Scenario 5 is broken, because your enemy just sits there & doesn't even build. We ignore that one. |
