The Battle of Sluis. It is early February 1340 and you, Edward III king of England, are planning a return to Flanders. Since Charles IV, died in 1328 without a male heir the dispute over who is the rightful king of France has turned violent. Philip of Valois, cousin of the late king, is trying to establish a new dynastic line but you are the nephew of the last Capetian king, and also claim the French throne. You had planned on only taking a small force with you north to Flanders. However, you have heard that Philip has sent a great fleet of ships from Spain and almost all of the French fleet to prevent you from sailing. Now you will have to raise a much larger force to combat the Valois tyrant. Multiplayer also : ; ; ; No |

"Naval action at Sluis" is an excellent naval B&D taking place during the 100 years war. Straight from the get-go, trouble was in my way. I'm told to go ahead and blot out the french fleet, and capture two admirals. First, I have some pirates that irritate me while I'm trying to get through. Dealing with them isn't easy; you're going to have to take the right steps and research the RIGHT technologies right from the start... From there, I go on to destroy the french fleet. Once I send a scout up there, a gaia fleet (complete with onboard troops!) attacks the reds. The reds also have the "onboard troops" that attack other ships, and really does look interesting. Problem is, once the ship is gone, they're just sitting there, floating oddly... Still quite a catch. To get gold, yo're going to have to do something you don't often do. Trade. Cat triemes are needed in large numbers here to blot out triemes and towers. In the end, this is a great, fun scenario but does die down a little bit after a while. Capturing the admirals is very difficult but is a good challenge. Overall, fun stuff.

Tricky at the end and the begining, little challenges here and there. At the begining you'll lose the game to pirate ships if you're not quick enough---meaning you're going to have to hit the right techs to counter their WG's. From here you can get gold through trading to get an effective cat trieme/trieme navy. Attacking the french navy is tricky, and will take a couple attacks before you actually break through. Keep in mind you're safe at this time though. Onboard reddie leigons attack you from the water and can be lethal if you don't take them out quick enough. Even worse are the Phoenie Juggies with 65% more firepower... They can take awhile to get rid of. When you finally break the french port down, you have to secure the area by blotting out towers (engineering comes in handy) and priests on the hill. Not difficult, but you have to be careful. From here, you have to convert the two admirals 'hiding' in the garden. You have to make sure both the priests are safe and are converting both the right units, otherwise if only one gets converted, it'll kill or be killed by the other unit. Overall, tricky on both ends and quite a catch overall; should be able to be handled by most players though.

Gameplay? An interesting B&D. Trading is nice and adds some "movement" going on in the seas while there's no warring. The onboard soldiers were quite a catch and looked nice too. On top of that, this is a medieval scenario in a B.C. game... That's different. The map featured some little tricks and some nice gaia material. The story is good as it is. Very creative scenario and stands out quite a bit for the most part.
Map Design: 3.7
Has all the tendencies of an excellent scenario. Very neat, clean and tidy. There were some "walking on water" tricks as well. A little "garden" is featured on one side of the port as well. Overall, a real jewel and looks very nice for a 1999 map.
Story/Instructions: 3.8
Has everything an excellent scenario needs. Short story is fairly decent, though nothing special. Instructions are clear, bitmap is great, hints are very handy, and the history was extensive and certainly worth a read. Overall, everything is great excepting a short story.
Additional Comments:Download? Yes! For certain, this is a great scenario. I'd highly suggest it.
